Nigerian Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has been seriously wounded after trying to kill himself to avoid capture during clashes with rival Islamic State-allied jihadists in the north of the country, two intelligence sources said Thursday.
Shekau's Boko Haram faction and fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province had been battling in northeastern Borno state, where ISWAP militants have become the dominant force in Nigeria's more than decade-long jihadist insurgency.
Shekau, who made international headlines when his men kidnapped nearly 300 schoolgirls in Chibok in 2014, has been reported dead several times since Boko Haram first began its insurgency in 2009.
After a series of clashes, Shekau and some of his fighters were surrounded on Wednesday by ISWAP jihadists in Boko Haram's Sambisa forest stronghold, where they demanded he surrender, one intelligence source said.
"To avoid capture, Shekau shot himself in the chest and the bullet pierced his shoulder," the source said, adding: "He was badly injured."
Some of his men managed to escape with him to an unknown destination, the source added.
Shekau has been declared injured or dead several times before.
A second intelligence source said Shekau was critically wounded after detonating explosives in the house where he was holed up with his men.
"We are investigating," Nigeria's army spokesman Mohammed Yerima told AFP by text, asked about those reports.
Shekau's critical injury or death would be a blow to his Boko Haram faction which has already been weakened by military airstrikes on its bases and defections among his men.
More than 40,000 people have been killed and over two million displaced from their homes by the conflict in northeast Nigeria, and fighting has spread to parts of neighboring Chad, Cameroon and Niger.
Boko Haram and ISWAP have fought battles for control of territory in the past.
ISWAP has emerged as the stronger force, carrying out complex attacks on the military and overrunning army bases.

Things are improving in the United States as vaccines are made available to the citizens who need them most. One thing that prevents us from getting even better results is the lack of BSN in its hospitals and healthcare facilities. Even before the pandemic broke out, there were hardly any Bachelor of Science nurses in Maine. And as many of our most experienced and qualified nurses retire, we will need more BSN designation nurses. It is extremely important that we support those who want to help us in our difficult times. Beal University wants to do its part by offering a new scholarship to nurses looking to earn their undergraduate degrees. Beal University is committed to providing dedicated nurses with access to higher education. Beals RN-BSN program gives RNs the opportunity to build on their previous education to meet the needs of nursing in todays complex healthcare system. In this program, Beal University helps students navigate a collection of key topics relevant to modern nursing. Leadership, critical thinking, and professional nursing practices are some of the skills students will learn as part of the program. While it currently seems difficult to continue your education, hospitals and clinics across the country have to work nurses to earn their undergraduate degrees. The Only Country Where Women Walk Every Where With A Gun
~1.1 mins read
Israeli women have been seen with assault rifles in beaches, coffee shops, restaurants and even malls. The most perplexing thing is that they carry the riffles while in civilian attires making it very hard to distinguish whether they are solders or criminals.
We all know of women in the military but the difference between Israeli women and the rest of the world is that they are allowed to walk with guns in public and ensure that they do not lose the weapon. In Israel every female and male is mandated to join the military for 2 years training if you are a girl and 3 years if you are a boy.
The reason why women are allowed to walk with guns is after the Government eased restrictions on holding firm arms. The main reason behind the easing was to enable fast and quick response whenever crime occurs. These women are also under strict rules to not lose the weapon because of severe punishment if you lose your gun.
All 18-years-old Israelis are outright required to join the military for some period as mentioned above to guard their weapon at all times. Women carrying guns is not necessarily a prestige or a defense mechanism as most would think. They are allowed to do so in order to respond to crimes faster as required.
According to Healthline, sleeping on the floor is not healthy for certain people, and there are reasons why it should be avoided. Here are some of the reasons:
1. During the day, the weather in this part of the world is usually hot, while the floor in your room is cold.
However, during the night, the weather becomes cold. If you sleep on the floor overnight, this will expose your body to a low temperature. You might wake up in the morning with frostbite, anemia, or hypothermia.
2. Sleeping on the floor is not healthy for older people because they have weaker spines. They can get bone fractures or cold-related sicknesses by sleeping on the floor.
3. For some people, sleeping on the floor can increase the pain in their spine. This is because sleeping on the floor won't allow your backbone to bend the way it should. This won't benefit your backbone.
If you sleep on a thick mattress, it gives you back pain while sleeping and when you wake up. The floor is logically firmer than a thick mattress and can cause pain in your spine. Studies have shown that for some people, sleeping on the floor doesn't provide relief from back pain as intended.
