Postinor is a contraceptive not an abortion drug. Some call it an emergency contraceptive. Simply put, it is intended to avoid a pregnancy not to remove one. Do take note please. By definition, a contraceptive works to prevent conception as a result of unprotected intercourse. Please it doesn't remove. More so, it doesn't always work. Guarantee is time dependent. Read on to understand more.
P2 as it is commonly called in local parlance is a very popular contraceptive or more broadly, birth control drug.
The active ingredient of postinor 2(which is a brand name) is levonorgestrel.
Basically postinor is taken by women after unprotected sex. But you have to understand that postinor 2 doesn't always guarantee a no pregnancy situation. The effect depends on the time frame of taking the drug.
Ideally, P2 is an emergency contraceptive and should be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. 85% of pregnancies have been proven to be avoided this way. However, 95% of pregnancies have been avoided when taken within 24 hours of the affair.
So basically postinor works with time, the sooner the better. Take the first tablet not more than 72 hours later. Then the second tablet should be taken exactly 12 hours after the first.
When not to take?
-If you suffer from high blood pressure
-If you are already pregnant (it is taken to avoid pregnancy not to remove one)
-if you are typically below 16 years.
-see a qualified doctor if you vomit within the first two hours of taking.
Now note that all drugs have side effects. So don't be alarmed when you notice side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, tender breasts, increased vaginal bleedings, stomach pain, diarrhoea. However if these effects persist too long, do see a doctor.
Finally, dear reader, if you must have sex this period, do well to be protected. Unprotected sex leads to a lot of heart breaks and very difficult situations.
Never ever abort that child! Prevent the pregnancy instead.

The 36-year-old Ugandan woman had a total of 44 children including four sets of twins, five sets of triplets and five quadruplets.
Nabatanzin, now a single mother who works as a tailor, hairdresser and herbalist to earn enough money to raise her 38 surviving children was reportedly sold into marriage at the age of 12 to a man who was 40-year-old at that time (28 years her senior). She had her first child one year later.
"Generally, I have tried to educate them. My dream is that my children go to school. They can lack anything (else), but they must go to school,"Nabatazni revealed in a recent Al Jazeera documentary.
"I can't say they are nagging because they are my children. I can't say I will abandon them because they are my children and I love them," Nabatazni added.
Mariam Nabatanzi and her kids
She recalled being warned by a doctor that birth control, like the Pill, could cause her problems because she had unusually large ovaries. So after her first set of twins, the babies just kept coming.
Her last pregnancy which led to the birth of her sixth set of twins 3 years ago, ended in tragedy. One of the babies died while she was in labour and then her husband who would often leave for weeks, left her for good.
Mariam said: "I have grown up in tears, my man has passed me through a lot of suffering.
"All my time has been spent looking after my children and working to earn some money."
It was after that pregnancy that she got the medical help she needed to stop her having more babies. She said the doctor told her he had "cut my uterus from inside".
Dr Charles Kiggundu, a gynecologist at Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, said:
"Her case is genetic predisposition to hyper-ovulate, which is releasing multiple eggs in one cycle, which significantly increases the chance of having multiples; it is always genetic."
