Nigerian Army Arrests Members Of Notorious Criminal Gang Led By A University Graduate

The Nigerian Army have arrested eight suspected kidnappers, sea pirates and armed robbers including a university graduate in Cross River State. 

 

The Commander, Sector 4 Land Component Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) Col. Omubo Idoniboye-Obu, disclosed this at Eburutu Cantonment in Calabar on Monday, November 9, while the handing over the suspects to the State Police Command.

Idoniboye-Obu said the suspects were arrested during series of operations conducted by the sector between October 10 and 16, 2020. Investigations revealed that the suspects were involved in kidnapping and armed robbery.

 

“Following the upsurge of kidnapping, sea piracy and robbery incidents in Calabar and environs, sector 4, OPDS collaborated with other security agencies with a view to checkmate the activities of criminals," he stated.


Some of the suspects include Ita Oku Ndiyo (a.ka Commander Musty), a 27-year- old graduate of Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH and leader of a notorious four-man criminal gang comprising of Bassey Effiom Okon, 27 ( a.k.a Eteka Bulldog ) an ex-convict who was declared wanted by the state government, Atuo Kenneth Martins, 32, an indigene of Nsufang Etung LGA of the state and Idang Anwakang,33 (a.k.a Tallest) 

 

“They robbed one Mr. Jan and Mr. Bobby (Cameroonians) on October 9, and 20, in Ikom LGA of the state and dispossessed them the sum of N4million naira and 181,000 CFA France,” he said.

 

Others arrested for robbery include Ajom Daniel ( a.k.a Bad Drug) , Godwin Ikono Nyong,34, (a.k.a German Machine) and 19-year-old Moses Edem (a.k.a Palo ) 


Col. Idoniboye –Obu stated that some of the suspects are ex-convicts while others have been on the wanted list of the state security agencies in the state.

 

The sum of N2, 192, 500. 181,000 CFA Franc, 30 tons Cement Mixer Truck, two X pump action guns, one X Barretta pistol, ten X cartridges and six X 9mm Ammo were recovered from the suspects. 

 

He said, as required by the Harmonised Standard Operating Procedure, the Sector officially hands over the suspects to the Commissioner of Police Cross River State Command while the truck and exhibits go to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

 

The colonel called on all law-abiding Cross Riverians to cooperate with the sector by giving timely and credible information as it is committed to eliminating crimes in the state.

    The police on Sunday ordered their officers and men to go after those who were looting private and government establishments under the guise of #EndSARS protests.
    Police commands in Akwa Ibom, Osun, Plateau, Kano and Anambra states in separate interviews with The PUNCH, said they had stepped up efforts to arrest  suspected looters.
    Already, no fewer than 483 suspected looters have been arrested in Lagos,  Akwa Ibom, Osun, Anambra, Kano and Plateau states.
    Peaceful protests by youths calling for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force turned violent on Tuesday when soldiers shot peaceful protesters in Lekki, Lagos.
    Policemen and thugs also attacked protesters across the country. Police stations, government buildings and vehicles have been vandalised  by thugs.
    On Friday, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), said no  fewer than 69 people died in the protests.
    Since Thursday last week, looters, have been attacking stores, where COVID-19 palliatives were  kept,  as well as residents of politicians in Oyo, Plateau and Akwa Ibom states.

    But on Sunday,  the police said they had begun clampdown on the looters.
    No fewer than 40 persons have been  arrested in connection with the looting  at the  Sabon Gari area of the Fagge Local Government Area  of Kano State on Tuesday.

    The Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna, disclosed this in an interview with The PUNCH in Kano on Sunday.
    He said the looters were apprehended in various parts of Sabon Gari with the exhibits (looted  goods), which were  with the police.
    “Over 40 suspects were arrested  and they were apprehended with the exhibits (the goods they stole from their victims).
    Recall that some miscreants,  who hijacked the #EndSARS protests, looted the multi-million naira Galaxy Mall at Sabon Gari, Kano on Tuesday.
    In Akwa Ibom State, the  Commissioner of Police, Andrew Amiengheme, said that the command had arrested 10 suspected looters and recovered stolen goods estimated at several millions of naira, following Thursday’s looting of private and government establishments in the state
    Speaking to one of our correspondents on Sunday,  through the command’s Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, the police commissioner said, “Officers have been mobilised to every nook and cranny of the state” to fish out the looters.

    Buhari Signs New Law Guiding Nigerias Banks, Other Financial Institutions

    reports that the President Muhammadu Buhari has approved to the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act 2020.
    This was made public in a statement by Garba Shehu, the presidential spokesman on Friday.

    The Act repeals the extant Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act 1991 as amended.

    The legislation is expected to enhance the resilience of the financial system for the growth of the economy of Nigerian.

    It updates the enabling law in response to developments and significant evolution in the financial sector.

    The Presidency said the Act will increase the appetite of banks and other financial institutions to channel credit to the real sector.

    It also introduces a credit tribunal to improve loan recovery.

    Also, the legislation addresses the incidence of high non-performing loans within the financial system.

    The Act strengthens the regulatory and supervisory framework for the financial industry.

    It provides additional tools for managing failing institutions and systemic distress to preserve financial stability.

    The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will meet stakeholders across various sectors to discuss critical aspects of the Act
