I once tried to help a rape victim get justice.

My wife got home and gave me a gist about a 15 years old girl that was raped around the supermarket she went to get some stuffs. She told me about how the girl had nobody and the IPO (a police woman) was intimidating the girl.

I got bothered and concerned. I told my wife to take me to see the girl. On getting there, I pitied her when I heard her story.

These guys attacked her while she was walking alone on a street.

Took her to a batcher, tight her hands and legs with rope and raped her. They could have murdered her there, if not for vigilante that heard her voice and came for her rescue.

I asked her what she wanted and she said "justice".

I immediately placed a call to my friend Nepi Philip , a top journalist with a popular radio station, and he asked me to drive the girl down to his area. I asked the girl to hop into my car and drove her down to meet with the journalist, in fact she was interviewed right inside my car.

Same night, I called a human right lawyer friend of mine Gbenga Oladapo, a renowned personality and lawyer who is very passionate about fighting for the oppressed, and drove the girl to his chamber.

The lawyer took the case up and filled petitions the following day to/at the police headquarters.

The news was broadcasted on radio. It became a trend and pressure was mounted on police to arrest the culprits and charge them to court. The police did the needful as a result of these combined efforts.

I travelled afterwards with the believe that the lawyer will follow through.

The culprits family later pleaded with the girl and offered a token of about N300,000 or N500,000 or so, to settle out of court.

I was disappointed when the girl called me to plead with me that she needed the money and may agree to their terms. I was not happy with her decision.

I told her that I went ahead to help her because she said she wanted justice and that I do not know her from Adam. I'm disappointed that she prefer the money than justice. If I had known from the onset, perhaps i wouldn't have embarked on a wasted effort. I was so determined to help her get justice, and perhaps I thought she meant it when she said all she wanted was to get justice.

Justice, to me, would have been to see all the culprits go to jail!!!! This is my own opinion.

That was the last time I heard from the lady.
