The Strangest Laws In The World
~1.0 mins read
It's illegal to commit suicide in Nigeria.
There have been cases in previous months/years of victims being detained and charged to court to be fined and even jailed, but this recent case broke me:
An unemployed man, Solomon Okon, has been in police custody for over a month for allegedly drinking a poisonous substance.
The 21-year-old, who had lost his job as hospital staff, couldn't bear the pain and decided to take the easy way out, probably the only way on his mind at that moment; he was fortunate to be spotted and got medical treatment because the incident occurred in the hospital but not so lucky:
They reported the matter to the police, and he was detained; they later took him to a judge who found him guilty and granted him bail of N200,000 with two guarantors to ensure he doesn't try that next time.:)
Mind you, this man's salary was only N35,000 with which he was supporting his family; if he had that sum and two sureties—which are obviously respected citizens of the country, would he had attempted suicide?
What could be worse than detaining a man who tried to commit suicide out of poverty and frustration, not just that, but took him to court and being made to pay a large sum to regain his freedom?

Who Did The German Army Soldiers Fear The Most?
~0.8 mins read
In late June of 1941, German soldiers were ordered to invade Russia.
What the German generals didn’t consider is that most Germans were terrified of the Russian Yeti.
As kids, Germans were told stories of Russian Yetis coming out at night. This was an attempt to get kids to come in at dark. The problem is it worked really well so they never felt the need to tell them that Russian Yetis have rarely been spotted in Germany.
As a result, there was a generation of young men who were immediately stricken with fear at the thought of going to the Yeti homeland.
Countless soldiers conveniently came down with injuries in the days leading up to the invasion. These weren’t fake injuries either. These men were so opposed to encountering a Yeti that they subjected themselves to broken hands, arms, and sprained ankles.
This story is mostly left out of German history due to the embarrassment it causes them.
