Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu Opens Up On Lionel Messi Saga
~1.2 mins read
Beleaguered Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has given himself a pat on the back for convincing Lionel Messi to stay at the Nou Camp.
Messi had his heart set on leaving the Catalan giants this summer and joining former boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
The Argentine superstar was convinced a clause in his contract allowed him to leave Barcelona for free, but the club and La Liga rejected his claims.
Messi eventually agreed to stay for another season and will now be allowed to leave for nothing next summer.
And Bartomeu, who faces a no-confidence vote in November over his presidency, insists the club have now moved on.
I won’t get into any conflict with him. He’s our captain and the leader of our team," he told Catalan television network TV3.
"I couldn’t let him leave the club, he is the best player of all time and the team needs him. Having Messi is a guarantee of success.
"We have seen him do his talking on the pitch and we have moved on from the saga. We should congratulate ourselves for getting Messi to stay with us and for how he has behaved in the last few days. The best player in the world should stay at our home."
Bartomeu's position is under threat after 20,000 fans signed a petition to call a vote over his future.
And he added: "The board and I will keep working to ensure we have the most competitive team possible.
"We will speak again after validating the votes but right now no-one wants to quit. The club won’t stop and we will keep working, we have lots of issues to sort out."

Liverpool Predicted Starting Lineup Vs Chelsea With Thiago Eligible To Make Debut
~1.1 mins read
Liverpool face Chelsea on Sunday afternoon as they continue their defence of their Premier League crown.
But Jurgen Klopp will want an improved defensive performance from his side after last weekend’s rollercoaster encounter with newly-promoted Leeds United.
Three times the Reds took the lead.
Three times they were pegged back by Marcelo Bielsa’s men.
Thankfully, Mohamed Salah was outstanding throughout and completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot to secure a 4-3 triumph.
But now a stern test at Stamford Bridge awaits against Frank Lampard’s side, who will have Timo Werner and Kai Havertz leading their attack.
Klopp has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the meeting, with Kostas Tsimikas and Xheridan Shari having returned to training earlier this week.
Both are in contention to make the squad.
New signing Thiago Alcantara is also eligible, after his move from Bayern Munich was completed in time for him to be involved.
However, having not trained fully, it is unlikely that the Spain playmaker will see any action so soon after his arrival.
Diogo Jota, who completed his potential £45million switch from Wolves on Saturday, cannot feature however.
Expect the side who have often been Liverpool ’s go-to in big games to get the nod.
That will mean Fabinho at the heart of midfield, with Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum on either side.
Predicted Liverpool starting lineup: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Donny Van De Beek Gives Impressions Of Man Utd Playing Style After First Defeat
~1.3 mins read
Donny van de Beek appeared far from impressed with what he saw from his Manchester United teammates as his home debut ended in defeat to Crystal Palace.
The £40m summer signing from Ajax started on the bench, but was introduced to the fold by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after 67 minutes with United 1-0 down.
He made a positive impression, hitting back with a goal after Palace had made it 2-0 with a controversial penalty, but ultimately he was unable to prevent a 3-1 defeat.
And speaking after the game he bemoaned the speed of United's build-up play, insisting they must do better in the future.
My first match for the club and then you want to win," Van de Beek said. "It doesn't matter how you want to win.
"I'm really disappointed that we lose 3-1 at home. I think it's really bad.
"Yeah (we did not have as much match sharpness as Palace) but last week in training we did really well.
"We trained good, so my feeling was really positive. But, yeah, today we played too slowly.
"We went too long with the ball and I think against an opponent like Crystal Palace you need to speed up the game to create something. That was not good enough."
Van de Beek took no consolation in his goal, and is clearly far from satisfied with how his debut went.
To play for all the fans in stadiums like this it's more nice to score," he added.
"But still I scored but we lose and this is the most important thing, that we win. We lose but it's always really nice to play for a club like this.
"I made my first game and I hope to help the team and next time that we win, for sure."

Mikel Arteta Confirms Arsenal Are Not Discussing A New Contract With Alexandre Lacazette
~1.7 mins read
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has admitted the club are yet to open contract talks with Alexandre Lacazette.
The French forward has just under two years remaining on his current deal and Arsenal were thought to be keen on tying him down to an extension.
The Gunners were given an anxious wait over the future of captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer after he entered the final 12 months of his contract.
But despite Lacazette edging towards that mark Arteta says discussions with the 29-year-old are not a priority.
"At the moment, we haven't started any negotiations," Arteta said. "We have a lot of things still to do in this market and at the moment we are focusing on those things."
There were reports suggesting Lacazette could be sold this summer to fund Arsenal's pursuit of other targets but Arteta has always insisted his desire to keep him.
Lacazette was in and out of the side last season following the Spaniard's appointment as manager and the emergence of promising youngster Eddie Nketiah.
He has started both of Arsenal's fixtures so far this season though, and scored the opener in both.
"He's a player I'm really happy with," Arteta added. "I think we've shown him a lot of faith since I arrived here.
"But we cannot start any speculation. We know that any player who is under two years of their contract is always going to be talked about."
Lacazette's header after 25 minutes put Arsenal ahead against West Ham on Saturday before Michail Antonio's equaliser before the break.
The Hammers looked to be heading for a draw until Nketiah struck a late winner to give Arsenal maximum points from their opening two games.
It was far from a vintage performance from Arsenal though and Arteta is aware there is work to be done.
"I am really happy with the three points," he said after the match. "I need to analyse properly, because we have a lot of issues that we created ourselves in many moments.
"It reminded me a little bit the game, and phases when we played them last year and let them run.
"There is no structure in the world that can sustain when someone has the ball completely free and gives it to the opponent. We have to improve in many things.
"We created enough chances to win the game, but we conceded too may chances that were our fault."

Philippe Coutinho Breaks Silence On Future After Receiving Barcelona Lifeline
~1.3 mins read
Philippe Coutinho has broken his silence following his return to Barcelona by insisting he is focused on working hard to be a success at the club this season.
The Brazilian midfielder looked to have burnt his bridges at the Nou Camp after scoring twice against Barca in Bayern Munich's 8-2 romp in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Coutinho was one of the players believed to be up for sale in a proposed mass exodus of Barcelona stars but he has been since handed a reprieve.
New boss Ronald Koeman informed Coutinho he wanted to keep him at the club and utilise him in first-team action, and the 28-year-old is keen to grasp his second chance.
I'm looking forward to a good time," Coutinho said after Barca's 1-0 win over Elche in the Joan Gamper friendly trophy on Saturday.
"I am very motivated. I want to work hard this year so that everything goes well on the pitch."
Barcelona's summer was thrown into turmoil immediately after their disastrous exit from Europe as captain Lionel Messi signalled his intentions to leave while Luis Suarez was put up for sale.
Messi's future has since been resolved though and Suarez's proposed move to Juventus now looks in doubt.
The arrival of Miralem Pjanic has helped to bolster Barca's ranks and Coutinho's return will also be a welcome boost to Koeman as he bids to overturn the club's recent fortunes
Barcelona kick off their La Liga campaign next Sunday at home to Villarreal and have won all three of their pre-season fixtures.
But Coutinho admits there is still plenty of work to be done.
"We haven't had much time to train in pre-season, but we are improving," he added. "We are getting used to the way the coaching staff works. We still have a week to get off to a good start."
