Opinion: 6 Reasons Why Christians Shouldn't Celebrate Christmas
~7.3 mins read
Christmas a hugely popular holiday celebrated by some 2 billion people worldwide. It's become such an ingrained part of modern culture that even people in nations with little or no Christian history or tradition are celebrating it in increasing numbers.
Christmas is so big that it plays a key role in the economies of many nations. In the U.S., retail industry, the day after the Thanksgiving holiday is commonly known as "Black Friday"—not because it's bad, but because this marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season and stores that have been "in the red"—operating at a loss all year suddenly see their sales shoot up so fast that they are now operating in the black (at a profit) the rest of the year. "Black Friday" is the biggest shopping day of the year due to its Christmas sales.
Christmas is big —very big. Schools and colleges commonly take a week or longer break at this time, some businesses shut down to give their employees time off, many families plan trips and get -togethers, and some people darken the door of a church for perhaps the first time all year.
So it's not surprising that I get some pretty shocked looks when I tell people I don't celebrate Christmas. That's pretty unusual for anyone, much less someone who's been an ordained minister for 15 years and edits a Christian magazine.
So what's up with this? Why would anyone not want to celebrate Christmas like nearly everybody else? Are there valid reasons for not participating in all the holiday hoopla?
American Late Show television program host David Letterman is famous for his "top 10" lists in which he offers pointed commentary about popular culture and current events.
So here I offer my top 6 potential reason for not celebrating Christmas!
1. Christmas is no place referenced in the Bible.
This is somewhat self-evident, yet the vast majority never thinks about it. The books of the New Testament cover 30+ long periods of Jesus Christ's life, at that point another 30+ long stretches of the early Church following His demise and revival, yet no place do we discover any trace of a Christmas festivity or anything distantly like it.
Truly, the Bible gives us many subtleties of His introduction to the world—the saintly appearance to Mary and afterward Joseph, the conditions encompassing His introduction to the world in Bethlehem, the superb ensemble's presentation for the shepherds in the fields outside the town. However, no place in the Bible is there any record of any one observing Christmas or any clue that God the Father or Jesus Christ anticipates that we should do as such.
2. Jesus wasn't brought into the world or close to December 25.
Astonishing yet obvious! Recollect those shepherds who were "living out in the fields, overseeing their group around evening time"? (Luke 2:8). December climate around Bethlehem is regularly pitiably chilly, wet and stormy. No shepherd in his correct psyche would have kept his rushes outside around evening time at that season!
The Interpreter's One Volume Commentary says this entry contends "against the birth [of Christ] happening on Dec. 25 since the climate would not have allowed" shepherds to be out in the fields with their herds at that point.
Furthermore, Celebrations: The Complete Book of American Holidays reveals to us that Luke's record of Christ's introduction to the world "recommends that Jesus may have been brought into the world in summer or late summer. Since December is cold and stormy in Judea, it is likely the shepherds would have looked for cover for their groups around evening time" (p. 309) instead of keeping them outside.
Likewise, Luke 2:1-4 reveals to us that Jesus was brought into the world in Bethlehem since his folks went to that town to enroll in a Roman enumeration. The Romans were notable as exceptionally proficient managers. It would have looked bad to have directed an evaluation in the dead of winter, when temperatures regularly dipped under freezing and heading out was troublesome because of helpless street conditions. Taking a statistic under such conditions would have been reckless!
3. The Christmas occasion is to a great extent a reused agnostic festival.
Once more, amazing however evident! Peruse it for yourself in pretty much any reference book.
Consider the traditions related to Christmas. What do enlivened evergreen trees, holly, mistletoe, yule logs, a jaunty full man in a hide lined red suit, sleighs and flying reindeer have to do with the introduction of Jesus Christ?
None of these things have anything to do with Him, yet they have a great deal to do with antiquated agnostic celebrations. (Peruse the enlightening subtleties in our free booklet
Furthermore, shouldn't something be said about the date of Dec. 25? How could it come to be doled out as the alleged date of Jesus Christ's introduction to the world? Students of history Gerard and Patricia Del Re clarify:
"The custom of observing December 25 as Christ's birthday went to the Romans from Persia. Mithra, the Persian divine force of light and hallowed agreements, was conceived out of a stone on December 25. Rome was well known for its teases with weird divine beings and factions, and in the third century the unchristian head Aurelian set up the celebration of Dies Invicti Solis, the Day of the Invincible Sun, on December 25.
"Mithra was an epitome of the sun, so this time of its resurrection was a significant day in Mithraism, which had become Rome's most recent authority religion. . . It is accepted that the sovereign Constantine clung to Mithraism up to the hour of his transformation to Christianity. He was likely instrumental in seeing that the significant dining experience of his old religion was persisted to his new confidence" (The Christmas Almanac, 1979, p. 17).
It's hard to decide the first occasion when anybody observed Dec. 25 as Christmas, however history specialists and large concur that it was at some point during the fourth century about 300 years after Christ's passing. And afterward a devised date was picked in light of the fact that it was at that point a mainstream agnostic occasion commending the introduction of the sun god!
Likewise, practically the entirety of the traditions related with Christmas are reused from old agnostic celebrations regarding different divine beings.
4. God sentences utilizing agnostic traditions to venerate Him.
Since Christmas is probably a day to venerate and observe God the Father and Jesus Christ, wouldn't it be a smart thought to investigate the Bible to perceive what it says about how we should adore God?
The appropriate response is very clear. God gives explicit guidance about utilizing agnostic practices to revere Him, the specific thing Christmas does! Notice what He says in Deuteronomy 12:30-32: ". . . Try not to ask after their divine beings, saying, 'How did these countries serve their divine beings? I additionally will do similarly. You will not love the LORD your God in that manner . . . Whatever I order you, be mindful so as to notice it; you will not add to it nor detract from it" (accentuation added all through).
Furthermore, in case some think this is just an Old Testament order that does not have any significant bearing anymore, the witness Paul makes a similar point in 2 Corinthians 6, where he tends to whether unethical strict traditions and practices have any spot in the love of God's kin:
"What cooperation has nobility with wilderness? What's more, what fellowship has light with obscurity? Also, what accord has Christ with Belial [the fallen angel as well as demons]? Or then again, what part has an adherent with an unbeliever? What's more, what arrangement has the sanctuary of God with symbols? For you are the sanctuary of the living God . . .
"In this way 'Come out from among them and be discrete, says the Lord. Try not to contact what is messy, and I will get you. 'I will be a Father to you, and you will be My children and girls, says the LORD Almighty. Therefore, having these guarantees, darling, let us purify ourselves from all foulness of the fragile living creature and soul, culminating heavenliness in the dread of God" (2 Corinthians 6:14-18; 2 Corinthians 7:1).
Instead of relabeling agnostic traditions as Christian, or permitting individuals from the Church to proceed with their old agnostic practices, the missionary Paul advised them plainly to give up every one of these types of love and love God in evident heavenliness as He orders. Jesus in like manner says His actual devotees "should venerate in soul and truth" (John 4:24) — not revel in reused agnostic traditions and imagery.
5. Christmas is adoring God to no end.
Since Christmas is a tangle of antiquated agnostic traditions developed by men, and an occasion discovered no place in the Bible, does God respect or acknowledge such love?
Jesus gives the appropriate response in His harsh reprimand of the strict educators of His day, men who had subbed human traditions and lessons for God's celestial facts and orders: "Very much did Isaiah prediction of you fakers . . . 'to no end they love Me, instructing as teachings the rules of men. . . . Really well you reject the rule of God,that you may keep your custom" (Mark 7:6-9).
In the seventeenth century Christmas was really banned in England and a few pieces of the American provinces on account of its untrustworthy and agnostic starting points. They realized something a great many people today have failed to remember or have never known!
6. You can't return Christ to something He was rarely in.
A few people concede the numerous issues with Christmas. Yet rather than face up to those issues, some affirm that we should "set Christ back in Christmas."
Be that as it may, it's difficult to "set Christ back in Christmas" since He never was in Christmas in any case! He never to such an extent as heard "Christmas" during His lifetime on earth, nor did His witnesses after Him. You can look through the Bible cover to cover yet you won't discover the words "Christmas," "Christmas tree," "mistletoe," "holly," "Santa Clause Claus" or "flying reindeer."
Returning Christ to Christmas may seem like a pleasant assumption, yet it's truly just a confused exertion to attempt to legitimize a long-standing human custom instead of what the Bible reveals to us we ought to do.
