US And Russia Enter Europe Border Battles
~2.2 mins read
SUPER POWER FACEOFF: US says Putin will be making a 'serious mistake' as it warns it is 'looking at ways of dealing' with Lukashenko as UK sends soldiers to Poland after Putin provokes West by deploying troops in Belarus and sending bombers over North Sea
America has warned Vladimir Putin will be making a 'serious mistake' if he invades Ukraine after the Russian president provoked the West by deploying troops in Belarus and sending bombers over the North Sea.
Vice President Kamala Harris said the 'eyes of the world' are on the Belarus border and the US is 'looking at the tools it has' after a day of rapid-fire developments led to fears of war breaking out on Europe's eastern border.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused dictator Alexander Lukashenko of using migration as a political weapon against the EU as Vice President Harris condemned his 'very troubling actions' on Poland's border.
Harris spoke about the situation at a press conference in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron – after Russia conducted bombing exercises with Belarusian forces and built up troops along its border with Ukraine – prompting the US to assert its 'ironclad' commitment to Ukrainian security.
'On the issue of Belarus and what is happening at the border with Poland, we are very concerned about that and closely paying attention to it,' she said. She also gave a warning to President Alexander Lukashenko's government.
'The Lukashenko regime, I believe is engaged in very troubling activity. It is something that I discussed with President Macron, and the eyes of the world and its leaders are watching what is happening there,' she said.
Defiant apparatchiks in Minsk hit back, as Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin accused western nations of trying to 'initiate conflict' using 'ultimatums, threats and blackmail' while vowing to 'respond harshly to any attacks'.
It comes after Russia and Belarus held snap paratrooper drills just 20 miles from a border crossing where thousands of migrants are gathered, saying it was to 'test the readiness' of their troops, at the same time as two Russian bombers flew close to the UK - with RAF Typhoons scrambled to escort them.
A 'small' detachment of British troops, thought to be from Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers, were also deployed to the Polish border to help beef up the defences, the Ministry of Defence confirmed.
French ministers warned their Russian counterparts of 'serious consequences' if Ukraine is invaded and called on the Kremlin to re-open dialogue with Kiev.
But Kremin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed those allegations, saying that Russia 'doesn't threaten anyone' while describing fears of an attack on Ukraine as a 'hollow and unfounded attempt to incite tensions'.
Peskov also claimed that Russia needed to protect its security against 'increasing provocations' near its borders.
He pointed at the US naval deployment to the Black Sea and increasingly frequent US and NATO intelligence flights. 'We take measures to ensure our security when our opponents take defiant action near our borders,' Peskov said. 'We can't stay indifferent to that; we must be on our guard.'

600 South African Girls Aged 9 And 10 Gave Birth In 2020
~1.3 mins read
More than 600 girls aged 9 and 10 gave birth in South Africa in 2020.
According to Statistics South Africa, 899 303 babies were born in 2020, and of those 34 587 were born to girls aged 17 and younger.
"Of the 34 587 births from teen mothers, 16 042 were aged 17, while 688 were [9 and] 10 years young. Early pregnancy and motherhood in South Africa create a greater risk in terms of maternal complications, resulting in low survival rates of babies, and forces many girls to prematurely take on an adult role which they are not emotionally or physically prepared for," said Stats SA.
Statistics for the recorded live births in 2020 were released on Thursday, showing that 1 003 307 births were registered in South Africa.
"Of these, 899 303 (89.6%) were births that occurred and were registered in 2020 (current birth registrations), while 104 004 (10.4%) were births that occurred in previous years but were registered in 2020," said Stats SA.
KwaZulu-Natal continued to perform poorly in terms of registering births within the stipulated 30-day period. Only 64% of births were registered within 30 days.
Stats SA said information about the fathers remained the biggest challenge.
"In 2020, no reliable information on fathers could be provided due to a high proportion of births (more than 60%) being registered without details of fathers.
"Section 10 of the Births and Deaths [Registration Act] prohibits unmarried fathers to have (sic) their information on the birth certificate of a child, which contributes to the high number of births with no information on fathers," said Stats SA.
"This is expected to change in the coming years as in September 2021, the Constitutional Court ruled that this section of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act is unconstitutional. This means unmarried fathers can now have their information registered in the birth certificate of their children at the Department of Home Affairs," Stats SA added.

Ondo State University Students To Pay N2.245m As Tuition Fees
~2.7 mins read
The Ondo State Governor, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has been receiving knocks over the recent increase of the tuition fee of the state-owned University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ondo, which required non-indigenes and indigenes studying dentistry in the institution in the preclinical years to pay N2.245 million and N1.320 respectively.
In a new schedule released by the school management, the fees to be paid by non-indigenous students were 59 per cent higher than what indigenous students would pay.
The development was described as shocking, inhumane and unacceptable by students, parents and opposition party.
Also, non-indigenous students studying medicine in the pre-clinical year are to pay N2.245 million per session while indigenous students are to pay N1.320 million per session.
THISDAY gathered that the only courses with low fees are Biochemistry and Physiology for which non-indigenous students are to pay N400,000 while indigenous students are to pay N350,000 per session.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Adesegun Fatusi, has stated that there was no going back on the new fee schedule, stressing that the new fee was for students to be admitted to the new academic session and in line with the institution’s commitment to offering quality education.
“The parents have an option. It is not compulsory for their children to study here. Other medical schools are available.
“We run this school almost free of tuition fees. This school is a specialised school and we cannot continue with the previous fees,” Fatusi said.
A student of the institution, Mr. Ajayi Kehinde, told THISDAY that “we were paying N350,000 and it was difficult, how does the government want our parents to get this huge amount of money from? This must be looked into.”
A parent who identified herself as Mrs. Adewole, called on the state government to rescind its decision for the interest of the poor masses.
Reacting, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the state tackled Akeredolu over astronomical hike in the fees, noting that the hike is a silent notice to parents who could not afford the new fees regime to withdraw their children.
The statement that was signed by the State Publicity Secretary of PDP by Mr. Kennedy Peretei, reads: “Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu has never hidden his penchant for increasing fees in tertiary institutions since he assumed leadership of the State. Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa had suffered serial closures over students’ protests bordering on fees hike.
“The Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo shrank to a student population of 1,753 from over 9,000 due to fees increase. Most private residential accommodation for students in Owo is now empty. Even the economy of the ancient city has been adversely affected.
“Parents and students of UNIMED received shockers of their lives when they noticed increment of fees with nearly 120 per cent for 2021/2022 session. No explanation was given for this hike. Medical students have to pay as much as N1,320,000.00 as against N515,000.00 payable in the previous academic session (2020/2021).
The party noted that “at Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti students of Medicine and Surgery require only N468,750.00 for 2021/2022 Session. For Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye N176,396.00 will be enough for the same course.”
It called on the governor and the APC led government to wear a human face in taking decisions that affect the wellbeing of future leaders.
“A government that only brings sorrow to the people through policies of this nature is no longer worthy of its stay in power.
“If neighbouring states with lesser revenue are charging lesser fees, why must Ondo State breed University drop outs because of wickedness of one man?
“Education is the only industry Ondo State is known for. If the incumbent administration cannot improve our lots, it is better not to complicate a bad situation.

Policemen Detained Engineer For Having Binance App In Lagos
~1.3 mins read
On Sunday, police officers attached to Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah, Lagos, arrested Toluwaleke Ariyo, a development engineer, and three of his friends, then extorted money from them for a crime they could not expressly state.
Ariyo and his friends were on a Bolt trip at about 9 pm in the VGC area of Lagos when a police vehicle double-crossed their car and asked to search them.
“Knowing it was late, my friends and I did not argue with them,” he told FIJ. “But they had not checked us well when they asked that we follow them to their police station.”
At the station, the officers searched their phones and interrogated them several times but found nothing incriminating. Meanwhile, one of them had a Binance app on his phone.
“The police officers said Binance is used for money laundering and concluded my friend was a thief. They checked the app and found $250 in it. Then they asked us to write a statement or negotiate our way out of their web," Ariyo said.
“I offered to give them N2,000, but they asked that I double it if at all they would listen to me. According to them, the N4,000 was for the opportunity to even talk to them.”
After Ariyo paid the officers N4,000 for negotiation, they then took his friend who had the Binance app on his phone to a nearby POS where they withdrew N18,000 out of the N20,000 in his account. The time was 3 am.
According to Ariyo, the agents were nasty and ready to invent evidence if they had not agreed to bribe them.
FIJ placed several calls to CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, Lagos State Police spokesperson, but they were not answered. A text message sent to his phone was also not responded to.
