Battleship Island;once World's Most Populated City Abandoned 47 Years Ago.
~3.5 mins read
Hashima, also known as Battleship Island because of the shape is an abandoned island of Nagasaki, lying about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the center of the city.

In the 19th century, large deposits of coal were discovered beneath the sea and a town was built entirely of concrete by the Mitsubishi conglomerate to house the miners and their families.

Hashima is a former coal mining site with over 150,000 tons of coal yearly.

People lived on the island from 1887 until 1974.

The Island lies to the west of the Japanese mainland, at approximately 18km from the port city of Nagasaki.

It’s also known as Gunkanjima, which means ‘battleship island’, due to the resemblance.

It covers an area of 6.3 hectares.

Hashima was famous for undersea coal mining.

It was bought in 1890 by Mitsubishi and subsequently developed for the workers and senior officials with hospitals and schools.

It was one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with a population of 5,200, at its peak, living in a space equivalent to that of fifteen football fields.

However, as petrol began to replace coal in the 60s, coal mines were eventually closed in Japan.

The downturn of economic activity compelled its residents to pack up and leave the island all within three months.

Hashima has remained desolate since.

Femi Otedola Becomes First Bank's Largest Shareholder To Take Over Investment.
~1.3 mins read
Exclusive! Femi Otedola takes over First Bank as largest shareholder with N30bn
From having a humongous loan portfolio of N192 billion in 2012 via his then Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd which was eventually passed on to the Asset Management Company of Nigeria, billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola has today taken over First Bank of Nigeria Plc with his recent acquisition of about N30 billion worth of shares, making him the single largest shareholder of the bank.

What this invariably means is that being the largest shareholder, he holds the highest voting shares and can dictate the direction of the bank through his voting power.

In 2019 when he divested his 75% direct and indirect shareholding in Forte Oil, via a merger of his company Zenon Oil and former African Petroleum, many wondered why he made such a decision especially because of the lucrative nature of the oil and gas sector.

They became all the more curious as to what his next move would be. He didn’t keep them guessing too long as he soon announced that he wanted to explore and maximize business opportunities in refining and petrochemicals.

Even though he also had investments in the real estate and financial sector, Otedola singled out First Bank for the single reason that there wasn’t exactly one man calling the shots there, unlike in other new generation banks.

He wasted no time in taking advantage of the leadership crisis that rocked First Bank not too long ago that the Central Bank of Nigeria sacking both the chairman of the bank, Ibukun Awosika and Obafemi Otudeko, the chairman of FBN Holdings.

Otedola made his moves and tday, he is the better for it.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya Borrowed N55.3billion In 2 Years.
~13.0 mins read
Since assuming office as Gombe governor in May 29, 2019, Inuwa Yahaya has borrowed and squandered at least N55.3 billion, per state documents obtained by The Gazette.

While begging southern governors to be their brother’s keeper and let the federal government keep collecting value-added tax, claiming Gombe residents could face acute hunger, Governor Inuwa Yahaya has been on a borrowing spree designed primarily to help him accumulate personal wealth, documents obtained by Peoples Gazette show.

Since assuming office on May 29, 2019, Mr Yahaya has sought and received approvals to borrow N44.3 billion, according to state documents obtained by The Gazette. The governor also collected N11 billion that his predecessor Ibrahim Dankwambo applied for but which he was unable to receive before his tenure expired. The governor also has a new plan to borrow an additional N35 billion.

Checks by The Gazette revealed that the governor did not spend the loans on the projects he cited for their necessity. Instead, he cornered billions for himself, leaving a spectre of crushing debts on a state already beset by a dearth of health and education infrastructure and ranks high in poverty indices.

Crushing debts

In documents reviewed by The Gazette, the governor was in October 2019 granted approval for loans of N10 billion and N2 billion respectively for the “provision of Infrastructural projects in the state and payment of counterpart fund requirements for accessing Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) donor funded projects.”

But Mr Yahaya did not settle the counterpart funding after the loan was approved by the House of Assembly but used the fund to execute projects within his own official residence and offices that were contracted to individuals in his pool of fronts. The conduits have consistently helped the governor syphone state funds to jurisdictions outside the state, officials said.

Again on October 9, 2019, the governor got approval to secure N14. 5 billion from Guarantee Trust Bank to provide infrastructure, ensure payment of state and local government employees and establish an industrial park to boost the state’s internally generated revenues.

On July 9, 2020, Mr Yahaya requested approval to obtain a N2 billion loan from United Bank for Africa to provide healthcare infrastructure amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Less than N50 million of the fund was spent on the state’s COVID containment as actual support came from federal government and international relief organisations, The Gazette found.

On June 24, 2021, the Gombe House of Assembly, in a letter addressed to Mr Yahaya’s office, granted his request to obtain a N10.8 billion contract finance facility from UBA Plc.

The governor had sought the request on June 22, citing “infrastructure particularly the provision of solar street lights, biometric for the state and local government employees and pensioners as well as additional funding for the construction and renovation of some selected hospitals in the state,” as reasons for the loan.

A fresh loan of N5 billion from Family Homes Funds was requested by Mr Yahaya on July 27, 2021, at an interest rate of nine per cent with flexible tenure of either 96 or 120 months. His administration, however, settled for 96 months repayment. According to the letter sent to the state’s parliament, the funds would be used to build 1,000 units of affordable homes.

Mr Yahaya also gave the banks and other bodies that made the loans available irrevocable standing payment orders (ISPOs) that will allow the loans to be deducted from the state’s federal allocations at divergent but significant interest rates.

La dolce vita

Mr Yahaya’s borrowing spree could further plunge Gombe — for a decade categorised as one of the poorest states in Nigeria — into impoverishment. In 2019, it was ranked ninth on the poverty headcount rate in Nigeria, at 63 per cent.

Amidst a storm of debates over value-added tax regime last month, Mr Yahaya implored Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Nyesom Wike and other southern governors to be their brother’s keeper, saying Gombe State residents could face acute hunger should there be a reform that will allow individual states to collect and keep much of their VAT receipts.

Southern governors have been waging a legal battle to reform the current VAT regime that allows Sharia states destroying beer consignments to benefit from alcohol revenues. The federal government and some northern governors have joined forces to challenge the southern states towards preserving the status quo.

“The VAT issue will have adverse effects not only on Gombe State but almost all the states of the federation,” Mr Yahaya said at an event where he was represented by Gombe finance commissioner Muhammad Magaji on September 8.

But Mr Yahaya himself has failed to put the plight of his people first, focusing instead on obtaining loans that he could deplete to expand his personal wealth and appetite for luxury destinations.

Although the governor has over time justified his borrowings, arguing that it was important to rely on borrowed funds to finance projects in the state, top officials in Gombe disclosed to The Gazette that Mr Yahaya had diverted the money.

“The governor has diverted the money he borrowed and changed most of it to dollars,” an administration official told The Gazette. “He enjoys the money in the Caribbean and European islands, and whenever he is in Nigeria, you will likely find him in Abuja and not on the ground in Gombe.”

The official, who works closely with Mr Yahaya, agreed to provide corroboration to The Gazette for this story after our reporter sent him copies of the loan documents.

“We have told his excellency to reduce his appetite for loans and focus on developing the state with federal allocations and internally-generated resources,” the senior Gombe official said. “We didn’t accuse him of corruption to his face, but we passed the message to him that people will soon ask him to explain what he did with all the funds he got approval to borrow from Gombe State House of Assembly.”

The N55.3 billion loan Mr Yahaya has so far acquired barely half into his four-year tenure did not include what Gombe has collected in federal allocation within the same period. Between May 2019 and December 2020, Gombe received N67,905,649,663.68 in federal allocations. Figures from January to September 2021 were not included because they could not be varied for accuracy prior to this publication.

The state’s revenue office also confirmed generating N8.4 billion in 2020, amidst several other streams of revenue that accrue to the state treasury periodically.

Officials said there are other loans the governor has secured and plundered using the state’s name, but The Gazette could not readily report them due to insufficient information and documents.

For over two days, both Mr Yahaya and his spokesman, Ismaila Uba Misilli, declined The Gazette’s request for comments. The governor initially promised to call back and clarify how he spent N55.3 billion borrowed from different channels, but failed to live up to his words or respond to subsequent efforts to extract his clarification.

Two members of the House of Assembly also said they could not comment on how the governor utilised approved loans even though they have constitutional powers of oversight in executive activities.

Concerns mount

In the past month, individuals and groups have expressed their concerns about the governor’s constant borrowings for various reasons, claiming Gombe’s infrastructure and public facilities continue to deteriorate, despite earnings from IGR and Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC).

In the 2021 edition of its annual state of states report, BudgIT, a civic-tech organisation for transparency and accountability, highlighted that the northeastern state “still has infrastructure gaps in education, health and roads that need significant capital investment.”

While referencing Gombe’s total debt as of December 31, 2020, BudgIT also stated that “Gombe spent N13.92 billion on servicing internal loans and N616.68 million on servicing external loans in the 2020 fiscal year.”

The civic outlet recommended that Mr Yahaya should improve Gombe’s low IGR-generating capacity, which makes it “dangerously” dependent on the federal government for its recurrent revenue.

Two weeks ago, the senator representing Gombe Central, Danjuma Goje, lamented the state’s health challenge was worsening due to lack of access to specialist hospitals where ailments can be diagnosed properly and treated.

In a debate on the bill seeking to establish an FMC in Deba, Gombe, which has scaled second reading in the Senate, Mr Doje lamented the state had yet to have an FMC since the existing one was upgraded to a teaching hospital.

“In Gombe State, the story is different as there exists no Federal Medical Centre after the upgrading of the existing one to a teaching hospital; hence the passage of this bill becomes expedient to alleviate the sufferings of Gombe people,” said Mr Goje.

Gombe Good Leadership Association, a pressure group in the state, appealed to “clueless” Mr Yahaya to avoid mortgaging the state through excess borrowings in a statement last week.

“The government has on paper been awarding contracts, but we state boldly that the reality on the ground is not reflective of such contracts,” it noted. The group also said that Mr Yahaya would have borrowed and plundered at least N109 billion before he leaves office, with additional N50 billion in projected interests within the same period.

Taliban Honours Suicide Bomber's Who Killed Us Soldiers In A Twisted Ceremony.
~2.3 mins read
SHAMELESS: THE Taliban have promised plots of lands and cash to relatives of suicide bombers who targeted US and Afghan forces, a spokesman has confirmed.

The acting Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani met family members at a ceremony at the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul on Tuesday to announce his decision.

According to a statement on Twitter, “the minister praised the Jihad and sacrifices of the martyrs” and even called them “heroes of Islam and the country."

At the end of the meeting families of the suicide bombers were given clothing, 10,000 afghani (£80) and promised plots of land, spokesman Qari Sayeed Khosti added.

The latest promise of rewards for suicide bombers is at odds with previous assurances made to the west regarding their role as “diplomatic responsible rulers."

Since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan they claimed they would not enforce the strict oppressive laws of the 90s, which included many sexist rules that saw females mostly excluded from education and work.

So far, the Taliban's education authority had said that this time women will be allowed to attend university.

But the order states that classes must be segregated by sex, or at least divided by a curtain and the students must wear an abaya robe and a niqab.

However, under the brutal Taliban regime, female students must only be taught by women or "old men" of good character - and end their lesson five minutes earlier than men to stop them from mingling outside.

Landlord Kills Tenant 3months Old Baby In A Fight In Bayelsa.

Landlord Kills Tenant's 3-Month-Old Baby During A Fight In Bayelsa (Photos, Video)

The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old landlord, Oyeinmiebi Selekowei for the murder of his tenant’s 3-month-old baby during a brawl at Amassoma community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state, IgbereTV reports.

The Bayelsa State Government through its Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT) has indicated its readiness to support the legal processes that will lead to the prosecution of the landlord.

According to reports, Selekowei had on September 13 allegedly killed the three-month-old baby of his tenant, Oscar Pere, because the latter tried to rescue a woman believed to be the landlord’s mother from assault at the hands of her son.

The suspect who got angry with the intervention of Pere, threatened to deal with him and kill his child.

Pere, in a complaint lodged with GRIT, stated that the suspect transferred aggression on him by holding his child upside down and hitting the back of the child’s head against the door until the baby died.

Findings showed that several relatives of the suspect had mounted pressure on the father of the deceased to settle the matter amicably.

Pere, a youth pastor with the Redeemed Christian of Church of God (RCCG), was quoted to have told GRIT officials that he did not want to be involved in any case against his child’s killer.

"I told you to let God fight because vengeance belongs to God. I will not want to offend my God by doing things outside his will,’ Pere reportedly said in his message.

However, officials of GRIT are preparing to press charges.

GRIT State Chairman Mrs Dise Sheila Ogbise, speaking on the issue on Wednesday, described the act of the suspect as barbaric and a criminal act against the state.

"The Prosperity Government of Governor Douye Diri has declared zero tolerance to all forms of violence especially gender-based violence and this case will not be an exception" she said.

GRIT Head of the Legal Mrs Debra Pamosoo said the complaint lodged at the GRIT secretariat by the father of the late child is criminal in nature and if the alleged offender is found guilty by a competent court of law, the punishment will be a death sentence.

"See Section 319 Criminal Code Of Bayelsa State. It suffices to also say that the alleged offence by the landlord is a breach of the constitutional fundamental right to life of the three months old baby,’ Pamosoo said.

Further checks showed that the suspect is in the custody of the State Criminal Intelligence Department (SCID) of the State Command which is investigating a case of murder against him.

Spokesman of the State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed that the accused landlord is still in the custody of the SCID and the legal department is preparing to charge him to court.

Bayelsa Opu Egberi shared a photo and video of the baby and the incident on Facebook with the caption;

"This beautiful baby was killed by the parent's Landlord over a heated quarel in Amasoma

Rest in peace innocent Baby!

The World is coming to an end!"

China Secretly Tested 2 Hypersonic Nuke Missiles That Defied The Law Of Physics Foreign Affairs.
~4.8 mins read
HYPERACTIVE: CHINA launched TWO hypersonic nuclear missiles which circled the Earth and "defied the laws of physics", a report says.

The test launches reportedly took place during the summer with the first on July 27 using a "fractional orbital bombardment” system which propelled the nuke-capable “hypersonic glide vehicle” around the planet.

According to the Financial Times, who spoke with two US intelligence sources, Beijing launched a second missile on August 13.

Three sources familiar with the first test said the launch "stunned" Pentagon officials because China demonstrated a brand new weapons capability - however they declined to go into further details.

One source said scientists were struggling to understand the test, which the US and other Western powers cannot replicate, adding that it appeared to "defy the laws of physics."

President Joe Biden admitted that "yes" he was concerned about China's development of such weaponry - however his defence secretary Lloyd Austin and other White House officials refused to comment on the reported tests.

The Chinese foreign ministry has denied the FT's report insisting they launched a space plane in July and not a missile.

Earlier this year, satellite images showed China was building hundreds of silos to house intercontinental ballistic missiles - rockets which have a range of more than 3,000 miles and can carry nuclear bombs.

Hypersonic missiles can hit speeds of up to 21,000mph - and potentially even faster - and are seen as devastating new frontier for warfare.

The rockets are a game changer because unlike ballistic missiles, which fly into space before returning on steep trajectories, they zoom in on targets at lower altitudes.

This combined with typical speeds of five times the speed of sound – or around 4,000mph – makes them extremely hard to shoot down and a potent weapon more countries want to get their hands on.

A senior diplomat has warned the US is unable to defend itself from hypersonic missiles.

Ambassador Robert Wood, the US representative at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, said: "Hypersonic technology is something that we have been concerned about.

"We just don't know how we can defend against that technology, neither does China, neither does Russia."

But the revelations of Beijing's summer missile tests has sent shockwaves through Western intelligence who fear they actually underestimated China.

Circling the globe, it shows the weapon potentially has a range of some 25,000 miles and can operate in space.

It means the missile can theoretically hit anywhere on Earth.

A key part of the hypersonic missile concept is the glide vehicle, which is carried to around 30 miles above the earth by a rocket but then becomes detached.

The glide vehicle then hurtles to earth using gravity.

Intelligence sources told the FT last week that one of the nuke-capable missile missed its target by about two-dozen miles when it was secretly launched.

Sit At Home;trailer, shop Set Ablaze In Enugu.
~2.5 mins read
The sit-at-home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra, on Thursday, in all parts of the South-East to protest the incarceration and trial of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has again spread sorrow in Enugu State.

This time, a shop and a trailer truck were set ablaze by hoodlums suspected to be enforcing the order at Eke — Obinagu suburb along the Enugu — Abakaliki Expressway in Enugu East Council Area of the state.

It was gathered that the truck which was said to be heading to Abakaliki was attacked and set ablaze around 3: 30 am. However, the drive was said to have escaped unhurt.

Our correspondent who visited the scene of the incident reports that the shop said to be stocked with provisions was razed down while the truck said to belong to CHISCO Company was burnt to its engine. However, the container is still intact.

It was observed that over 10 security operatives led by the police had been stationed at the scene to ensure that the goods in the container weren’t looted.

Meanwhile, roads and streets in the state were deserted as residents observed the sit-at-home order.

Our correspondent who monitored the compliance in Emene and Abakaliki road report that both business and social activities were grounded.

Only a few people were seen trekking on the roads. Shops, malls, petrol stations, banks and markets were shut down.

Efforts to get the police reaction were unsuccessful as the State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, could not be reached on the telephone as it was said switched off.
