US.President Elect Appoints Another Nigerian Into His Cabinet
Joe Biden, the President-elect of the United States of America, has appointed Nigerian-born Funmi Olorunnipa Badejo into his cabinet.
The President-elect made announcement when he named additional 20 members of the office of the White House counsel.
Badejo is a lawyer and an alumna of Berkeley Law College in the US, and served as ethics counsel in the same office toward the end of the President Barrack Obama administration.
She, alongside other lawyers of the Office of White House Counsel will be advising the President, the executive office of the president, and the White House staff on legal issues pertaining to the president and the White House.
A statement on the Biden-Harris transition website said that Badejo was general counsel of the house select subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis which was chaired by James Clyburn, House Majority Whip.
“Her prior government service includes serving as Counsel for policy to the Assistant Attorney-General in the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, Ethics Counsel at the White House Counsel’s Office and Attorney Advisor at the Administrative Conference of the United States during the Obama-Biden administration,†the statement read.
Biden will become the 46th President of the United States after his swearing-in slated for January 20, 2021
He defeated the incumbent President Donald Trump in the November 3 presidential election after scoring over 300 electoral college votes
Although Trump rejected the election result claiming electoral fraud, he could not provide proofs and has lost numerous cases he filed in court.
President Trump was however, impeached on Wednesday for the second time having been accused of inciting his supporters to launch a deadly attack on US Capitol In a final push to stop the confirmation of Biden as the winner of the election by the Congress.
Biden had earlier In December 2020 appointed a Nigerian-American, Osaremen Okolo, a Ni, a member of Biden’s COVID-19 response team.
Before then, Nigerian-born Adewale Adeyemo has been appointed as deputy secretary of the treasury department.
COVID-19 second wave: Nigerian govt confirms date schools will reopen nationwide
The Federal Government has finally decided to go ahead with the January 18, 2021 resumption date for schools nationwide.
This is despite the pressure being mounted by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other stakeholders that school should remain shut amid the second wave of the pandemic.
On Monday, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, during the press briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Monday said the January 18 resumption date was not sacrosanct.
However, in a statement signed by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Bem Goong, Adamu explained that the decision to maintain the resumption date was the aftermath of “extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders, including state governors, commissioners of education, proprietors and heads of institutions, staff unions and studentsâ€, respectively.
The Minister, however, urged parents and respective institutions to ensure full compliance with COVID-19 protocols.
The statement read in full: “Sequel to the hint given during the press briefing on 12 January 2021 for the review of the proposed resumption date of 18th January 2021, the Federal Ministry of Education has undertaken a comprehensive appraisal of the situation.
“After extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders, including State Governors, Commissioners of Education, Proprietors and heads of institutions, staff unions and students, the consensus of opinion is that the resumption date of 18th January should remain, while parents and respective institutions must ensure full compliance with COVID-19 protocols including:- (i) Compulsory wearing of Facemasks by all students, teachers and workers in all schools (ii) Temperature checks and hand washing facilities at strategic locations in all schools (iii) Ensuring constant supply of water and sanitizers (iv) Enforcement of maintenance of social distancing and suspension of large gatherings such as assembly and visiting days. (v) Avoiding overcrowding, including limitations in class sizes and hostel occupancy (vi) Availability of functional health clinics with facilities for isolation and transportation of suspected cases to medical facilities (vii) Adherence to all other non-pharmaceutical protocols, restrictions and containment measures as may be prescribed/ approved by the PTF from time to time.
“These measures which are to ensure safe reopening of schools for academic activities will be subject to constant review as we urge teachers, school administrators and other stakeholders to ensure strict compliance.â€
2023: APC opens up on Tinubu’s chances of becoming presidential candidate
The All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday, opened up on the chances of Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, emerging as its presidential candidate in 2023.
Ex-Deputy National Publicity Secretary of APC, Yekini Nabena, said Tinubu’s chances are dependent on his alliances with party stakeholders from other zones in the country.

“It depends on who he is aligning with and his alibi. A tree cannot make a forest, you can be strong in a particular state but what about others.

Meanwhile, former and current Speakers of State Houses of Assembly in the South West on Thursday threw their weight behind the projected presidential ambition of Tinubu.
They made their stand known during a meeting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Evelyn Ngige, Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of the Civil Service, announced the measure in a statement.
The closure would be between 12:00 noon January 14 and 1:00pm January 15.
The celebration will climax with the wreath laying ceremony by President Muhammadu Buhari, senior government officials and members of the Diplomatic Corps.
“All officers whose Ministries, Department and Agencies located within these office complexes are expected to close early on Thursday, and resume late on Friday as specifiedâ€, Ngige noted.

1. The Federal Government, on Tuesday, announced preparation for the 2021 Nigeria Armed Forces Day.

2. The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, declared Tuesday in Abuja that the demons frustrating the passage and Presidential Assent to the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) within the last 14 years, will be defeated this year by the 9th National Assembly.
Lawan, told journalists on his 62 birthday celebration, that the patriotic zeal used by the National Assembly in October 2019, to pass the Amendment Bill on Deep Offshore Oil Production Sharing Contracts, will be deployed for expeditious consideration and passage of the PIB already before it, latest by the end of first quarter of this year.
3. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has welcomed efforts by a team of Nigerian professors and scientists investigating the effectiveness and roles some drugs can play in the treatment of COVID-19.
Osinbajo, who was briefed on the report yesterday by a team of scientists led by Prof. Femi Babalola, the Principal investigator, and Prof. Chris Bode, the Chief Medical Director of LUTH, expressed happiness that Nigeria and Nigerians “are at the cutting edge of scientific research into the COVID-19 treatment.â€
4. Despite the Federal Government’s decision to review schools reopening on January 18, the Bauchi State government on Tuesday insisted schools in the State will reopen for the first term of the 2020/2021 academic session next Monday.
The Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Aliyu Tilde, said all schools in the state would reopen on Monday, 18th January irrespective of any review made by the Federal Government.
5. Gunmen have shot dead a councillorship candidate in the forthcoming local government elections, in Delta State, Mr. Elliot Offa.
The gunmen also abducted two others who were with the deceased at the time of the incident.
6. The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, has said that the Federal Government will be left with no other option but to impose another lockdown if the rise in COVID-19 cases continues.
The Minister, during the 2021 budget breakdown in Abuja on Tuesday, prayed that the situation should not get to that point when Nigerians would be forced to stay in their home again.
7. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has said that it was reviewing its adopted technologies for elections, with a view of introducing new ones to improve the conduct of the elections in the country ahead of 2023.
Mr. Nick Dazang, the INEC Director of Voter Education and Publicity Department (VEP), stated this on Tuesday, at a workshop for the department on the “Review of National Voter Education Manual†held in Keffi, Nasarawa State, disclosed that INEC began the process for electronic voting since 2004 when it introduced optic map registration forms.
8. Security operatives, on Tuesday, conducted further air missions over locations in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, even as they rescued a minor from bandits in Igabi Local Government Area.
Confirming the rescue of the minor, the state Commissioner for Internal security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan explained that, “in continuation of offensives over identified bandit hideouts, air platforms on Tuesday conducted armed missions over locations in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.â€
9. Unknown gunmen have killed two persons and wounded two others in Kizachi village, Kauru LGA area of Kaduna State.
Confirming the killings on Tuesday, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan said troops under the auspices of Operation Safe Haven reported an attack on Kizachi village in Kauru local government area.
10. The Director of the Kaduna State Fire Service, Mr Paul Aboi, has said seventy-six persons died in 615 fire incidents recorded in the State in 2020.
The Director, who disclosed this on Tuesday, said 139 persons were injured in the fire incidents, while 85 people were rescued
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has recorded 1,270 new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19).
This brings the total number of infections to 102,601 in Nigeria.
The NCDC made this known on its official website, Tuesday, confirming that 12 new deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours.
This takes the nation’s death toll to 1,373 .
NCDC reported that the new infections were reported from 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to the breakdown released by the health agency, Lagos takes the lead with 435 infections, FCT 234, Oyo 103, and Plateau 86.
