The Nigeria Of My Dream At 60
~5.3 mins read

Nigeria will be 60, its diamond anniversary, in a matter of months – precisely October 1, 2020.  There is a reason that sixty is regarded as the age of diamond, the most precious and the hardest naturally-formed mineral yet known. These are two distinguishing qualities of diamond that do not come easy.  Diamond is ordinarily carbon. Research reveals that it acquires these exceptional properties subjected to extreme conditions: temperature of more than 1,200 degrees C (2200 degrees F) and pressure of about 330,000 kg (725,000lb) per square inch. These happen at more than 90 miles under the ground and over a period of a billion years.

There can be no stronger evidence that nothing good comes easy. If such temperature and pressure over aeons brought the best (and not the worst) out of carbon, it is not unreasonable to expect that tough conditions are the challenges that can bring out greatness in men and nations. Before I stretch the comparison too far, there is a determinant difference between inanimate carbon and thinking man. Whereas carbon has no choice in the process that transforms it, men and nations have the freedom (freewill), to by their thought action, further, or hinder, the process that will take them to the height of greatness. Were Nigeria a citizen of Nigeria, it will, at 60 years of age, have survived several years beyond the average Nigerian ‘life expectancy’ of 50-something years, as calculated by global institutions.

That is an achievement of physical, spiritual, and emotional endurance worth celebrating. People celebrate their 60th birthday, some their 50th. It is for successfully navigating the vicissitudes of life, more so in a global environment full of threats from different directions. A country is continually under internally and externally – induced stresses of political, economic, social, and other kinds. But many things being equal – including that it does not take its continued existence for granted – a federation of nations such as Nigeria can live much longer and attain greatness by drawing multiple and diverse strengths from its plurality.

This country suffered and survived many man – inflicted stresses and pressures in the last 50 years. It experienced coups d’état, a civil war, intermittent communal, religious, and ethnic clashes. Nigeria has lived through the wastefulness and later, austerity of the Shagari years, the rapacity of the military regimes, and the political chicanery of the Babangida years of which Joe Igbokwe wrote, correctly, that ‘his tenure represents an error of history’, the Abacha’s oppressive and kleptomaniac regime, and the failed Third term plot of a certain opinionate president. Our country continues to endure a generally parasitic elite composed of a crooked business class, an unconscionable, self-seeking political class, egoistic religious leaders, and arrogant and selfish traditional rulers.

It is quite an achievement that this country remains intact.  But to merely survive is never good enough; that is the self –limiting thinking of a mediocre. For, sixty years of self-rule, Nigerians, and Nigeria, are not yet the best that they can be. But indeed we can. It is up to us.  If time, temperature and pressure make diamond, the character and achievements of Nigeria at 60 should by now have much to be proud of. Regrettably, this country of so much is, to be charitable, merely a diamond in the making. So, even though there is cause to rejoice that we remain one at all, if we consider what and where this country should be by its diamond anniversary – only months away – there are not enough reasons to mark this event the way a diamond anniversary is usually celebrated. To think otherwise is to live in denial of the facts.  Nonetheless, I dare not give up on, or lose hope for my country; I have no other.  Besides, two great minds give me reasons to hope. Dr. Martin King Jr. advises that we must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope, and Dostoevsky warns that ‘to live without hope is to cease to live’. I don’t want to die yet. So, I dream of and hope for a great Nigeria that is ready, willing, and able to fulfill its destiny among the Black race. It is do-able, it is possible, it will happen in due season. How soon or delayed is up to us. But first some reflection. As Maya Angelou says, if you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you are going.  How did we come to this pretty pass?  Where did we get it wrong?  In the words of a Nigerian saying, ‘where did the rain begin to beat us?’

The first and overall point to make is that Nigeria’s problems originate from, are created, by Nigerians. Briefly stated, Nigeria has a ‘human quality problem’. The second point – and it derives directly from the first – is that, as Achebe (1983) puts it, the trouble with Nigeria is the failure of its leadership (composed of Nigerians). I submit that, even more fundamental than leadership failure, the problem of Nigeria is Nigerians! Countries are built on the character of their people, wrote one religious writer. Character deficiency is the heart of the problem with Nigeria. The third point is that, whereas most Nigerians are unhappy with the sorry state of their country, it is by now, repeatedly proven that salvation may never come from the top, from small dominant class that perpetrates, perpetuates, and bountifully benefits from the status quo. It is popular, but lazy, thinking to expect that Nigeria’s power elite will ‘do something’ about the many things wrong with our country. If it can, it apparently will not at the cost of its own convenience. Otherwise, it would have under its military wing when, as a stratocracy, drastic, positive and enduring steps could be taken to set the country on the right path. But such expectation is akin to asking a man to destroy the source of his present comfort and future benefits. That great an expectation will require him to re-define and re-invent himself – values, thinking and purpose. An extreme demand indeed! In any case, no one gives what he does not have. There is another reason that the drastic measures to clean up and elevate this country may never come from the present leaders. The recruitment process into leadership ensures that the crooked attracts only its type.

Which explains the capacity for corruption of even younger members of the ruling elite. Considering the amount that are reportedly stolen, as well as the unabashed display of wealth, the younger ones are more brazen than their mentors.  No wonder little has changed, year in year out, under administrations. The French would say ‘plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose’ meaning that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Surely, there is need for a new way to address the problems that keep us and our country down. Instead of a top-down approach that may never effect the change we desire for our country, I suggest a people centered, self-engendered, bottom-up change of attitude and commitment.

Nigeria @60
~1.0 mins read

Nigeria at 60 can not boast of any remarkable thing it has achieved right from 1960 till date.

Nigeria still depends on other countries for virtually everything it uses or consumes even Rice, God. A commodity that can be grown, cultivated, sold and exported to other countries so as to raise revenue for the country.

Killing and kidnapping is now the order of the day, its now a normal happening in Nigeria and the pressent administration has done nothing about it.
What is their to celebrate when people are dying, when the economy is zero, when students are at home because of Corona virus but that same government are conducting elections, Asuu is on strike, Labour is on strike...this country is shameless.

We hear now and then that the government borrowed money from world bank. For what? Where do those money go to, Abacha loots where are the recovered money, our roads are death traps, unemployment everywhere, the blood of the innocent cry everyday.

The most important reason why states are formed is for the protection of lives and properties but if those things are not met then that state should not be.

We need a better Nigeria
We need good Rulers
Government should stop extorting money from its citizens all in the name of VTU.

Fathers Love
~1.3 mins read
Hello friend 😁, i want you to know this;
Your father is not Otedola but it does not make him anyless of a Father.

I was very dissapointed reading some comments under DJ. Cuppy's tweet. A lot of people where just dragging their fathers and saying aweful things about them🤦.

You must know that your dad may not be able to buy you the heavens and the earth, infact, I cannot even count how many times during my Primary & Secondary school days that my dad promised me a alot if I took 1st-3rd position, till today, I am yet to receive all 😂. But this does not make him any less of a father when being compared to Mr. Otedola.At least he Fulfilled Some am Grateful and I seriously enjoyed my childhood because the Little He did left Joyful Memories💕💕.

Yes! I know you would give up anything just to wake up tomorrow and discover that somehow somewhere, you are either Otedola's long lost child or his relative directly or indirectly(In your dreams🙄). But never forget your Father; the one who is ready to do anything to make sure you become comfortable in life,The one who sacrifice alot for you🥺,The one who ❤️ despite your weakness.

Life may not be too rosy for you compared to that of the Otedolas, but do not concentrate on hating your father for the things he could not afford or did not see necessary getting for you.
Learn to always appreciate your fathers they are trying! He provides for your needs, he loves you. He wants the best for you. He is not Otedola but he is not anyless of a Father...

Am Proud of you Daddy Emmanuel❤️
And you are the Best Ever😍😍

Life Is Deep

A mad man handed his cheque to a bank teller and said, “I would like to withdraw N5000..”

The Male teller told the mad man “For withdrawals less than N10,000, please use the ATM”.

The mad man then asked, “Why?” The teller irritably told the mad man, “These are rules. Please leave if there is no other matter. There is a queue behind you.” the teller then returned the cheque to the mad man.

The mad man remained silent. But he returned the cheque to the teller and said, “Please help me withdraw all the money I have.”

The teller was astonished when he checked the account balance of the mad man through the system. He nodded his head, knelt down and said to the mad man.

 â€œMy apologies Sir, you have N3.5 billion in your account and our bank does not have so much cash currently. Could you make an appointment and come again tomorrow?"

The mad man then asked, “How much am I able to withdraw now?”

The teller told him, “Any amount up to N300,000.”

The mad man then told the teller that he wanted to withdraw N300,000 from his account.

The teller did so quickly and handed it to the mad man respectfully.

The mad man kept N5000 in his bag and asked the teller to deposit the balance of N295000 back into his account.

The teller was dumbfounded.

 Rules are inflexible but we humans can be flexible when the situation requires us to be.

We should not treat people base on their look or how they are dressed.

Rather, we should treat everyone with respect. And never be too quick to judge a book by its cover.

EVERYBODY IS IMPORTANT. STAY LOW AND DON'T OVERRATE YOURSELF.

Whose Father Is He?
~1.0 mins read

 ```A beggar came asking for food. I told him to come around to the back door and asked him to sit on the floor while I went in to bring the left over food.
I brought him food & said, let's pray. Now repeat after me, "Our FATHER in Heaven". He said, "Your Father in Heaven". I said."No, say OUR FATHER in Heaven". He again said,  "Your Father in Heaven"!!!
This extremely Irritated me! I asked why do you say 'Your' father when I say 'Our' FATHER?'
He said, "Sir, it's like this. If I say Our FATHER, then we both become brothers. If we are brothers, you would invite me in through the front door and not the back; you would ask me to sit at your dining table not on the floor; you'd also not give me stale food! Sir, somehow it's not possible that we are sons of the same father"!
He may be your Father, but he can't be OUR father!
Whose FATHER is He?
It took a beggar to teach me the truth!!!```
 *GOD becomes our FATHER when we treat one another as brothers and sisters.*
Think very deeply about this. Be your brothers keeper. Remain blessed.
BF: Hi babe. So good to see you. What kept you so long?
GF: *gives him a bear hug* Sorry sweetheart, there was a lot of traffic.
BF: That’s fine, I’m so happy to see you.
They were both hungry, so they chatted for a bit and then had the food.
[Boy’s cellphone rings. He answers. It’s his GF’s mom]
BF: Hi
Girl’s mom: (She’s in tears. Her voice is shaking.) Hi son, I’m so sorry to say that I’m in the hospital and my girl just passed out *weeps*
BF: Wha.. what are you talking about?
Girls mom: (sobbing) She was in an accident… she did not make it… (Her voice tails off)
The Call
~2.6 mins read
A boy and a girl were the best of friends. They could talk and talk for what seemed like hours, spending all their time on the phone.
And when they were speaking to each other it was like there was nothing wrong in the world, they could never be unhappy or sad in those moments.
One day, the girl texted the boy and he didn’t reply which was most unusual. She tried again but to no avail. Finally, she called him but there was no answer.
An entire day passed and the boy was not available through phone or text. The girl started getting worried that something was definitely wrong.
That second night, the girl couldn’t sleep and stayed up all night worrying and crying. It was then she realized just how much the boy actually meant to her.
The next morning however, she received a call. It was the boy! She was so happy and as soon as she picked up the call…
Boy: Hey!
Girl: I’m so glad to hear from you, what happened?
Boy: I… I was… busy.
[The girl knew that something was off but she couldn’t ask.]
[silence]
Boy: You know what, we should stop this. We shouldn’t talk any more.
Girl: [stunned silence] What? Why?
Boy: Sorry. Bye.
[Boy cuts the call. The girl cannot believe it, it’s as if she has lost a part of her.]
All their past conversations started flashing in front of her eyes.
She started crying, tears were streaming down her face.
She was lost and confused.
She felt broken, sad and alone.
She was standing on the roof and wanted to jump.
He was the one for her, why had he done that?
“Why?!” she yelled as loudly as she could from the roof.
Then she decided she was going to try and win him back.
[She dialled his number]
Girl: Hey
Boy: What did you call me for?
Girl: I need to say something.
Boy: Go ahead.
Girl: I wanted to say just one thing…
[Her voice choked. “He doesn’t care about me,” she thought.]
Boy: Say it!
Girl: Are you okay?
[Silence]
The tears were streaming down her face again. She hung up, and decided to write a note and ran out of the house with it.
[Six hours passed]
[Phone rings in boy’s room]
It’s the girls mom. She tells him that the girl got hit by a car when she was on her way to see the boy and that she’s admitted in the hospital.
The boy rushed to see her.
He reached and took her name, she opened her eyes.
Boy: Please be okay, I’m so sorry.
Girl: Why did you do that?
Boy: I have a heart condition and I don’t have many days to live. I didn’t want to hurt you.
Girl closes her eyes, never to wake up again.
Boy could not believe this has happened because of him.
10 minutes later, the boy gets a heart attack and dies from grief
