Soldier Kills Himself & Mistress After He “misfired Service Rifle”
~0.9 mins read
Nigerian Army corporal Ojo Ayodele has reportedly killed himself and a yet-to-be-identified lady presumed to be his mistress in an accidental discharge of his firearm, Peoples Gazette learnt Wednesday.

Military sources told the Gazette that the soldier, an operative of “Operation Safe Haven” who was deployed to Rafin Sanyi duty location in Sopp village, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, was found in a pool of blood, alongside his slain lover on Wednesday afternoon.

Citing an internal army memo by military authorities, our sources disclosed that the late corporal was suspected to have “misfired” his rifle, leading to the tragic incident.

“Efforts to recover the corpses are in progress,” the memo read, noting that the reason for the incident was yet to be ascertained.

The army correspondence added that the divisional police officer of Riyom Divisional Police Headquarters has been contacted on the matter.

An army spokesman did not immediately return requests from the Gazette for comments.

It was unclear whether or not the army corporal had recently returned from a tour in the ongoing war against Boko Haram. Several Nigerian soldiers have recently died of apparent suicide after suffering mental health degradation as a result of extensive deployment in the Northeast.

Apple Loses Copyright Claims Against ‘virtual Iphone’ Maker
~2.2 mins read
Apple Inc. lost its copyright claims against a Florida company that makes “virtual iPhones” used by security researchers to test for vulnerabilities to its system.

Apple contended Corellium LLC copied the operating system, graphical user interface and other aspects of the devices without permission. It accused Corellium of acting under the guise of helping discover bugs in the iPhone’s operating system but then selling the information “on the open market to the highest bidder.”

Corellium’s actions fell under an exception to copyright law because it “creates a new, virtual platform for iOS and adds capabilities not available on Apple’s iOS devices,” District Court Judge Rodney Smith in West Palm Beach ruled Tuesday. That Corellium sells its product “does not undermine its fair use defense, particularly considering the public benefit of the product.”

Apple has a “bounty program” where it rewards so-called white hat hackers who discover flaws in its system. The Cupertino, California-based company argued that the Corellium product went far beyond that, though Corellium said it evaluates potential customers and rejects some.

Corellium has said its customers are government agencies, financial institutions and security researchers and accused Apple of trying to control security research to limit what the public learns about vulnerabilities. Apple had been in talks to buy the company but the two sides couldn’t agree on a price, Smith said. Apple sued a year later.

Corellium’s virtual product is used on a desktop computer and can’t make phone calls, send text messages, access iTunes or do any of the other things an iPhone can.

“There is evidence in the record to support Corellium’s position that its product is intended for security research and, as Apple concedes, can be used for security research,” the judge said. “Further, Apple itself would have used the product for internal testing had it successfully acquired the company.”

Officials with the two companies didn’t immediately respond to queries seeking comment.

Apple argued that the case is similar to the billion-dollar dispute between Oracle Corp. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google unit, in which an appeals court rejected Google’s arguments that it had the right to copy Oracle code for inclusion into the Android operating system. The Supreme Court is considering the issue.

Smith said they aren’t comparable — Corellium transforms iOS and adds new content, and it isn’t a direct competitor. He said it was instead more like the case in which an appeals court ruled that Google’s creation of digital copies of books and display of snippets in search results was a fair use of copyrighted works.

The judge said that Corellium may still be in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which prohibits tools to circumvent security measures, so he declined to dismiss that aspect of the case at this stage. He ordered the two sides to submit a status report by Jan. 11 to determine how the case proceeds.

The ruling was reported earlier by the Washington Post.

The case is Apple Inc. v. Corellium LLC, 19-81160, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida (West Palm Beach)

Nigerians Will Be Happy To Have A Government They Trust
~1.3 mins read
The Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has said that Nigerians will be happy to have a government that can be trusted.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, he lamented the lack of trust in President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

“We will be really happy to have a government to trust,” he said, adding that “All those who speak on behalf of the government should believe in the sacredness of the truth.

“Nigerians are ready to listen to the truth. But when they are consistently deceived, it is neither good for the government nor good for the governed.

“Here, everybody needs to do an examination of conscience. I will throw the ball back, not only to President Buhari himself but all those who are with him running the affairs of this nation.”

While regretting the spate of killings in the country, Cardinal Onaiyekan said Nigerians should not be living in the country with fear.

While arguing that those in government move about with security details, the cleric explained that until the citizens move about freely without escorts, no one is safe.

“We should not be living in a nation in which we are not secured. We should not be living in a Nigeria where I cannot travel from Abuja without my heart missing 10 beats.

“I should be able to take my car and drive to my town in Kabba without fear of being hijacked by the way. And the fact that we are not safe is clear.

“Those of them who are high up in government know under what condition they travel around, if they ever travel by road. Until Nigerians can move around without escorts, we are not safe,” he added.

Trust Us Again To Fix Nigeria, Buhari Begs Nigerians
~5.3 mins read
President Muhammadu Buhari has pleaded with Nigerians to once again invest their trust in his administration’s commitment to restore peace, security and prosperity to all parts of the country.

President Buhari made the plea in his Christmas message to Nigerians, which was made available to State House Correspondents by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Mr Femi Adesina on Thursday.

The President also challenged all Christians, and indeed, all Nigerians to reinvent to one another the values that the Christmas celebration represents, noting that the country is most in need of such virtues at the moment, having gone through series of stressful circumstances.

He said his administration would continue to work to make Nigeria safe for all residents by ensuring that the armed forces are properly and adequately equipped.

He however commended the armed forces and all security agencies for their efforts at keeping the country safe, charging them to do more to ward crimes and criminals out of circulation in the country.

“In Christendom, Christmas season represents joy, peace, hope, love, goodwill and imminent salvation. These worthy values which Jesus’ Advent symbolize, are very much needed in our country at this time when we are confronted with diverse challenges like the rising spate of armed banditry, kidnappings, insurgency, economic recession, and an upsurge of COVID-19 infections.

“I wish to, therefore, enjoin fellow compatriots to appropriate the hope that comes with Christmas and reinvest trust in this Administration’s determination and unwavering commitment to restore peace, security, and prosperity to our dear country.

“Under my watch, the Federal Government will continue to provide the needed support within available resources to the gallant members of our armed forces and security agencies as they confront threats to our citizens. While I commend them for their efforts so far, I urge them to do more to checkmate increasing incidents of security threats, especially in the northern parts of the country as well as the entire nation in varying degrees.

“Their display of tact, camaraderie, and expertise that led to the recent return of abducted schoolboys of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, will remain a milestone in the annals of the country.

“For me, providing security for all residents in the country remains an article of faith. It formed a vital segment of this Administration’s three-point agenda right from inception, and we must follow through with it.

“I cannot in good conscience shirk this cardinal responsibility to secure lives and property. I feel pained each time a breach of peace and security occurs in any part of the nation. I am even more distressed when our youths, especially school children, are the targets and victims of mindless and malevolent elements in society.

“As a parent, I share the emotional torture and agony parents and guardians go through whenever their children and wards fall into the cruel hands of these enemies of decency and good society.

“I plead with fellow compatriots to give our military and other security agencies more time, cooperation and support by volunteering credible intelligence/information on activities of armed bandits, insurgents and other criminal elements within their communities in order to put an end to this blight on our security landscape”, he said.

On how to combat the security crisis in the country, the President noted that the situation is not as simplistic as those proffering solutions are seeing it, but said he would ensure to follow up with bringing the multi-faceted security crisis into the barest minimum.

“To be sure, the problems are beyond the simplistic options being bandied around. We shall remain focused on following the complex, multi-dimensional route to reducing the incidents of insecurity to the barest minimum. Our people must be free to live and move without let or hindrance. This is crucial not only to enthroning an atmosphere of calm and social cohesion, but for the economy to grow”, he said.

On the celebration, he called on citizens to use the season of goodwill and joy to renew their faith in the ability of his administration to make a lasting difference in the lives of hard-working people.

“Let us use this season of goodwill and joy to renew our faith in the ability of this Administration to make a lasting difference in the lives of our hard-working people. Our Social Intervention measures and other economic policies are already yielding positive results even at modest rates”, he said.

The President said his administration would continue to target the youth for development so they would not be available to the lure of those with unpatriotic intents.

He, however, noted that his administration would no longer allow protests to fester into chaos.

“We shall deliberately target our youths so that they will not fall into the trap of unpatriotic elements to foment social disobedience leading to avoidable loss of lives and property.

“Let me reiterate that while the right to peaceful association and protest is guaranteed under our laws, this Administration will not fold its arms and watch protests however well-intended, degenerate into wanton killings of law enforcement and other security personnel as well as the destruction of private and national assets.

“It is gladdening to note that the various schemes and components of the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP) are being implemented faithfully to support micro-small businesses. I am particularly delighted that artisans, small-time transporters, traders and farmers are the main beneficiaries as we continue to provide safety nets to the most vulnerable members of our society as well as business owners to mitigate the harsh economic environment occasioned by COVID-19.

“In spite of dwindling national revenue worsened by the pandemic, we will do all that is required to fully implement the 2021 Budget of Economic Recovery and Resilience. We are optimistic that all things being equal, we should be able to exit recession at the shortest possible time”, he said.

He charged Nigerians to go about celebrating the Christmas and New Year festivities discreetly, noting that there are indications that the nation had already entered the second wave of the COVID-19 spread.

“There is every indication that our country is already experiencing a second wave of COVID-19 infection. As we celebrate Christmas with families and friends, I urge all citizens and residents to adhere strictly to the non-pharmaceutical prevention guidelines of regular hand-washing, wearing masks and social/physical distancing with a view to mitigating the spread of this devastating virus.

“While national and state institutions are trying their best, we must take individual responsibility and resist the strong temptation of compliance-fatigue by following the recommended protocols put in place by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and beat the ravaging pandemic.

“I have absolute confidence in the spirit of resilience of our people to do the needful and remain vigilant even as this festive season witnesses increased travels and celebrations. Staying alive to enjoy future festivals should be the watchword.

“I wish all Nigerians divine protection and Merry Christmas,” he said.

Another Mutant Form Of COVID-19 Discovered In Nigeria
~1.5 mins read
Another new variant of coronavirus has emerged in Nigeria, Africa’s leading public health official has said.

John Nkengasong, head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, revealed the new strain on Thursday – saying it is different to the ones found recently in the UK and South Africa.

But he added that it is still too early to tell what effects the new variant might possess, saying that scientists needed ‘more time’ to study it.

Coroanvirus variants emerge routinely as the virus spreads, but those in the UK and South Africa have been widely reported because scientists believe they are significantly more infectious than previous strains.

‘Give us some time. It’s still very early,’ Dr Nkengasong said.

The alert about the apparent new variant was based on two or three genetic sequences, he said, but that and South Africa’s alert late last week were enough to prompt an emergency meeting of the Africa CDC this week.

Dr Nkengasong said the Nigeria CDC and the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases will analyse more samples.

The news comes as infections surge again in parts of the African continent.

The new variant in South Africa is the predominant one there, Mr Nkengasong said, as confirmed infections in the country approach a million.

While the variant transmits quickly and viral loads are higher, it is not yet clear whether it leads to a more severe disease, he added.

‘We believe this mutation will not have an effect’ on the deployment of Covid-19 vaccines to the continent, he said of the South Africa variant.

South Africa’s health minister late on Wednesday announced an ‘alarming rate of spread’, with more than 14,000 new cases confirmed in the past day, including more than 400 deaths.

The country has more than 950,000 infections and Covid-19 is ‘unrelenting,’ Zwelini Mkhize said in a statement.

The African continent has more than 2.5 million confirmed cases, or 3.3% of global cases. Infections across the continent have risen 10.9% over the past four weeks, Mr Nkengasong said, including a 52% increase in Nigeria and 40% in South Africa.
