DROWNING IN CRISIS: UNRAVELING THE CAUSES, CONSEQUENCES AND SOLUTIONS TO FLOODING IN LAGOS STATE
~4.4 mins read
Drenched streets, rising waters, and homes transformed into temporary islands. The ominous dance of flooding disrupts lives and reshapes landscapes. In the aquatic ballet of nature’s fury, understanding the rhythms of floods become crucial. Join me as I plunge into the depths of this liquid symphony, unraveling the mysteries, impacts, and resilient solutions that ebb and flow with the tides of our changing world.
Flooding, an unwelcomed deluge of nature’s power, occurs when water breaches its boundaries, inundating once-dry lands with a relentless surge. This forceful convergence of liquid chaos transforms landscapes, leaving behind a trail of submerged tales and challenging us to navigate the unpredictable currents of environmental resilience. From the quiet creeks to the mighty rivers, the causes of flooding are as diverse as the ecosystems they impact. In this journey into the heart of inundation, we dissect the atmospheric intricacies, deforestation, dilemmas, and urbanization woes that jointly compose the narrative of rising waters. Join me as I navigate the currents of understanding, seeking clarity in the tumultuous origins of flooding.
To begin with, some of the formidable contributors to flooding includes:
1. THE UNYIELDING FORCE OF RAINFALL (Relentless rainfall). Intense and prolonged precipitation can saturate the soil, overwhelm rivers, and trigger flash floods in a matter of hours. As clouds release their burdens, vulnerable regions bear witness to a deluge that reshapes the terrain and challenges the resilience of communities. Similarly, the topography of some areas in Lagos State is not left out, the low-lying nature of certain areas in Lagos makes them prone to flooding, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
2.INADEQUATE DRAINAGE INFRASTRUCTURE contributes significantly to flooding. Clogged or poorly maintained drainage channels impede the smooth flow of water.
3. CHANGES IN WEATHER PATTERNS and increased frequency of extreme weather events due to climate change can contribute to more intense and frequent rainfall, amplifying the risk of flooding
4. UNREGULATED SAND MINING along water bodies can alter riverbeds and exacerbate erosion, affecting the natural flow of water and increasing the likelihood of flooding.
5. CLEARING VEGETATION reduces natural water absorption and increases surface runoff, contributing to higher flood risks.
Summarily, illegal structures waste disposal, poor urban planning, coastal location significantly contributes to unending flooding in Lagos State, Nigeria.
With the stage set by intricate interplay of natural forces discussed earlier, the impacts of flooding unfold like chapters in a story, leaving indelible imprints on the tapestry of communities. Beyond the scientific exploration of the causes, it’s crucial to delve into the tangible consequences that ripple through the lives of those confronted by nature’s watery embrace. Below are the uncontrollable impact of flooding in Lagos communities;
Firstly, DISPLACEMENT AND HOMELESSNESS is one the major impact of flooding. Floodwaters sweep through neighborhoods, displacing families and rendering homes inhabitable. Communities often find themselves grapping with the immediate need for shelter, leading to temporary or even long-term displacement. The loss of a secure home base amplifies the challenges residents face in rebuilding their lives.
On the other hand, INFRASTRUCTURE DAMAGES like roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure bear the brunt of flooding. Erosion, sediment deposition, and structural damage disrupt transportation networks, making it difficult for emergency services to reach affected areas and hindering the overall recovery process. The financial toll of repairing or rebuilding infrastructure further strains community resources which is also a major constraint of flooding.
Consequently, ECONOMIC LOSSES like businesses, agriculture, local economies also suffer significant setbacks as floodwaters inundate fields, factories, and commercial areas. Crop damage, disrupted supply chains and closures result in economic losses that reverberate through communities, affecting livelihoods and exacerbating existing socio-economic challenges.
In the same vein, floodwaters often carry contaminants, POSING SUBSTANTIAL RISKS TO PUBLIC HEALTH. Waterborne diseases, exposure to hazardous materials, and the displacement of disease vectors contribute to a heightened threat of illness.
Beyond the tangible losses, THE EMOTIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL TOLL on individuals and communities is profound. The trauma of witnessing homes and belongings engulfed by water, coupled with the uncertainty of recovery, can lead to long-lasting mental health challenges.
Transitioning from the impacts to actionable responses, let us now explore the resilient strategies and preventive measures poised to safeguard communities from the unforgiving grip of flooding.
First and foremost, IMPLEMENTING ROBUST WARNING SYSTEMS equips communities to anticipate and respond swiftly to impending floods. Advanced meteorological technology, coupled with community outreached, creating public awareness, explaining the consequences of flooding, ensures timely alerts and improve preparedness of the community dwellers. It enables proactive evacuation and resource mobilization.
In addition, PRESERVING AND RESTORING NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS, such as wetlands and mangroves, serves as a natural buffer against flooding. These ecosystems act as sponges, absorbing excess water and preventing catastrophic inundation of adjacent areas.
Also, AFFORESTATION AND REFORESTATION helps to mitigate the impact of flooding in communities. Planting trees and restoring forested areas helps stabilize soil, reduce surface runoff i.e erosion, increase water absorption. Forest contributes to overall watershed health and can mitigate the impact of floods.
However, EDUCATING COMMUNITIES about flood risks and implementing preparedness programs can empower residents to respond effectively during flood events. Community drills, awareness campaigns, and the dissemination of relevant information are crucial components of this approach
In conclusion, in the arsenal of strategies to combat flooding, proper waste disposal emerges as a crucial line of defense, offering a twofold solution that addresses both environmental and infrastructural vulnerabilities. Adopting proper waste disposal not only mitigates environmental pollution but also serve as a crucial preventative measure to alleviate the impact of floods.
Summarily, in the ebb and flow of our exploration into the depths of flooding, the call to action resonates like a steady drumbeat. As we navigate the waters of understanding, let us not merely observe but actively participate in the symphony of solutions. Together, through resilient practices, responsible policies and a shared commitment to safeguarding our communities, we can transform the narrative from one vulnerability to one of triumph over the rising tide. Let our action echo louder than the waters that once threatened, let our shared determination become the bedrock upon which we build a future where the threat of flooding is met with preparedness, resilience collective promise to safeguard the landscapes we call home.

10 WAYS TO WORK SMARTER THAN HARDER
~3.3 mins read
Everyone has 24 hours each day, but somehow, some people achieve more than others during this same period of time we all have each day. The reason for this is not luck or magic. It is because those who achieve more have mastered the art of working smart, not necessarily hard.
One of the easiest ways to improve your productivity and performance is through smart work, not hard work alone. With smart work, you can also save your energy, make yourself more valuable, increase your self-esteem and many more.
Working smart makes it possible for you to achieve more in the shortest time possible and out-perform those working harder than you.
In this article, we will discuss 10 ways you can be more productive by working smarter.
1. Shun perfectionism
Perfectionism slows down delivery and wastes your valuable time. If you wait until you get it all figured out before you start, then you may never get to do the work. Working smart requires you to make quick but calculated decisions. To work smart, you must always hit the ground running immediately when you are given a task.
2. Discover your productivity zone and time
The environment you are in will influence your productivity. This is why it is important to discover where you are most productive. For instance, some people find it easier to assimilate while reading in a noisy place, while others decode quickly when they read in a quiet and serene environment.
Also, are you a night person or a day person? You must discover this to know when best to perform your task.
3. Stop multitasking
As human beings, we always try to multitask and lay our hands on many things simultaneously, but the truth is that multitasking is a myth. It is difficult to keep the focus on multiple tasks that require brain power. Always try to focus your attention fully on one single task until you complete it, then you can quickly move to the next task.
4. Set your priorities
You must be able to always grade the importance of the activities in front of you every day, then prioritise the important ones and focus more of your energy on them. Avoid channeling much of your energy on the less important tasks at the expense of the important ones.
5. Learn to say no
Saying no may be difficult sometimes, but it is a habit you should learn if you care about working smart. You don’t need to say yes to everything that is brought to you. Try to learn how to respectfully decline irrelevant tasks that may drain your energy and brain power. Be sure not to overschedule yourself and be realistic about what you can achieve in a day.
6. Plan ahead of time and stick to it
Be it a daily, weekly or monthly plan, it is a known fact that planning makes your work easier and smarter. Planning gives you a clear idea of what you need to do next. It saves you from an unnecessary waste of time trying to think about the next line of action. Having a clear plan gives you direction, helps you focus and increases your confidence.
7. Maximise your work time; take a break when necessary
As the saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” To work smart, you don’t need to work 24 hours a day. You just need to maximise your working time. Without a proper break, your brain will easily get tired and lose concentration. Take time out to relax and cool your brain.
8. Surround yourself with like-minded people
Apart from serving as motivation for you to get your job done, surrounding yourself with like-minded people will also make your work easier and smarter. Getting relevant and useful information will be easier if you are with people who share the same commitment as you.
9. Avoid distraction
You can’t work smartly if you are distracted. To be more productive, you need to do away with any form of distraction or interruption. To concentrate fully on the task in front of you, there is a need to turn off anything that can divert your attention.
10. Take care of yourself
Working smart requires you to prioritize taking good care of yourself. You should get enough sleep, eat healthy food, and exercise your body. Feeling well rested will boost your productivity.

A REMINISCENCE OF PASTOR W F KUMUYI ON AN INCIDENT IN 1951
~2.3 mins read
UA REMINISCENCE OF PASTOR W F KUMUYI ON AN INCIDENT IN 1951
"I remembered yesterday in particular about 1951, when I was in school and the teachers drilled me and the rest of us so much in the different subjects. I didn't like this, especially how they treated me in particular, so I decided not to go to school again. That day, I went back home, not knowing that my dutiful father did not go to work as usual. I was surprised to see him at home.
"He asked me why I came home and I told him that we were told to go and bring money for harvest. He asked me how much, I told him and he took the amount, put it in his pocket and said we should go back to school together. On getting there, my father met the headmaster, and told him I came home, and the headmaster responded that he had wanted to contact my father to report to him that I've not been coming to school.
"So my father, very militant and a disciplinarian to the core told the headmaster to get all the pupils together in the assembly hall and the head-boy was told to back me and my father personally whipped me in front of all the school. It was painful and I felt very ashamed. The following day, my father told me to go to school and warned me that if I didn't stay, he would deal with me again.
"I became bold and told him I was no longer going to school because of what he did to me the previous day. He asked me what I wanted to do and I said farming, so he gave me a cutlass and I went to the farm. He didn't discourage me not to go. I got to the farm and cut off all the cocoyams and other things there. I did the same thing the following day.
"That was when my father realized that my future would be endangered, so before the following term started, he called and sat me down and said he did not have education, but wanted me to have it. He said this was why he did what he did and for the first time, he apologized and said he was sorry. So, I said okay and went back to school.
"If I didn't go back to school, and said my father whipped and disgraced me in front of everybody,
• I won't be where I am today,
• I would not have gone to secondary school,
• I would not have gone to the university,
• I would not have made a 1st class in Mathematics,
• I would not have established Deeper Life Bible Church.
"Go back to school, go back to your family, go back to your home, don't say you can never go back because of what happened.
"NEVER SAY NEVER
"A great future is before you, swallow your pride, and think about your future".
