Tips To Flawless Foundation
~1.3 mins read
First, you should identify the different types of formulas, textures and finishes of foundations that are available to you. For example, the formula and finish can help you select the appropriate foundation for the appropriate skin type. A dry skin would naturally want a foundation that hydrates and protects the skin while enhancing a dewy and luminous finish. An oily skin with high shine, may want to minimize the appearance of pores and excess oil along with creating a matte or flat finish.
When it comes to selecting the right foundation colour, try and establish the natural pigment in the skin; a helpful tip to identify the natural pigment is by looking at the palm of the hand, you will be able to distinguish if the individual leans towards pink cool tones or yellow warm tones. This will help give you clues as to what your customer’s natural pigment is.
To keep your foundation looking natural, select colours very similar to the natural skin colour and apply small amounts near the jaw line.
To correct skin tone, use this tip:
If the skin is prone to pink, red or high colour, select foundation shades that are ivory or have a slight yellow pigment to help tone down the pink or red in the complexion. For those with yellow pigments, it’s best to brighten the complexion by selecting foundations that have a slight pink or beige hue.
If you are looking to conceal imperfections such as brown spots or broken capillaries, select a foundation one shade slightly darker than the natural skin colour and apply the foundation in a patting motion, which will further help conceal imperfections.
To avoid any line of demarcation with your foundation near the jaw line, apply your foundation generously in the T-zone and cheekbones and blend outward and downward for a natural looking gradation.

How To Stand-out For The Right Reasons On This Seasons TIFF Red Carpet
~2.7 mins read
Looking great on the red carpet requires a different approach to makeup than your day-to-day routine.  Between the hot lights and the glare from flash photography, your beautiful makeup application can quickly go from dewy to sweaty in a heartbeat. However, makeup professionals have a number of tricks up their sleeve to help keep celebrities and film industry professionals standing out for the right reasons on the red carpet. Celeb and wedding makeup artist, Brittany Gray of Fancy Face Inc., shares her red carpet tips for looking fab during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF):
  • Opt for a full coverage satin or velvet foundation rather than a BB cream or anything too dewy. With all the bright lights and flash photography, the last thing you want to do is look like you just finished a jog. When applying your foundation, thin it out with a small amount of mattifying moisturizer (SPF free) and apply with a damp beauty blender to press the product into the skin. Continue blending until the foundation disappears and any seams are unnoticeable. Blend under the chin, down the neck and on the décolletage. You want to ensure your skin tone is even anywhere and everywhere that your dress is not covering.

  • Make those eyes pop! If there is ever a time and place for false lashes, the red carpet is it! Mascara alone will not do enough justice; with all the cameras flashing, more simplistic makeup will get lost in translation. When choosing false lashes, opt for individuals or strip lashes cut into thirds. Ardell Demi Wispies and the Ardell short, medium and long individual double clusters are my favourite lashes for red carpet events. Ensure that you don't apply too many clusters, as you want to look like a true professional and not a showgirl. Apply mascara first and then the lashes on top with a clear glue.

  • Add some life to those cheeks. The last thing you want is to look washed out in photos that will be circling the internet the day after. One way to look glowing, glamorous and full of life is to concentrate the pigment on the apples of your cheeks. Choose a tone that is more neutral, as you don't want to look too flushed or clown-like. A great option is MAC's "Warm Soul". This is a soft and romantic neutral shade with a touch of luminosity to give you that lit from within glow.

  • Make your lipstick stay all day. A pro tip to ensure a lasting pout is to first apply a sugar scrub to the lips to help remove all dead skin. I recommend Sara Happ's Lip Scrub in Lavender. Once your lips look soft and supple, apply a hydrating lip balm and keep it on for at least a half hour before applying your lipstick. When ready to apply colour, blot off the moisture from the balm and dust on translucent setting powder (Laura Mercier is my favourite) over the entire lip landscape. Take a neutral nude pencil and line the lips. Fill in the lips with this pencil as well, then take a q-tip to soften any harsh edges. Dip back into your loose translucent setting powder and set the lip liner by dusting over it. Apply your favourite lipstick shade (choose a matte texture to ensure longevity), blot, and voila! Your lipstick will be sure to stay all day.

  • Add glow to your arms and legs. Don’t forget about the other exposed areas of your body! Charlotte Tilbury developed a product for the Victoria Secret models to put on their bodies prior to walking down the catwalk. It's called "Supermodel Body", which gives a beautiful glow to your skin without looking too glossy or oily. Make sure to apply this a good 30 minutes before getting dressed to ensure it soaks into the skin.
