Meet Nwude, The Biggest Nigerian Fraudster In History Who 'Sold A Fake Airport' To A Brazilian For $242m
~3.6 mins read
Meet Nwude, the Biggest Nigerian Fraudster in History Who 'Sold a Fake Airport' to a Brazilian for $242m

Here is the story of Emmanuel Nwude who committed the largest fraud in Nigeria by selling a non-existing airport to a Brazilian banker for $242 million between 1995 and 1998..

Emmanuel Nwude carried out one of the the biggest banking fraud in the world

The rise of internet fraud commonly known as 419 is one phenomenon Nigeria has come to be associated with. Before internet fraud became a global issue, Nwude had committed one of the biggest scams in the world.

Specifically, his fraud was the third largest banking scam in the world after the Nick Leeson's trading losses at Barings Bank, and the looting of the Iraqi Central Bank by Qusay Hussein.

How was Emmanuel Nwude able to carry out this jaw-dropping scam and convince Nelson Sakaguchi who was the director of the bank to part with so much money for the purchase of an airport?

He impersonated the then governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Paul Ogwuma, and connected with Sakaguchi informing him of a mouth-watering deal of Nigeria’s plan to build an airport in Abuja.

Nwude, pretending to be the Central Bank of Nigeria governor, told Sakaguchi that he stood the chance of pocketing $10 million commission when the deal passed through. Sakaguchi paid $191 million in cash and the remainder in the form of outstanding interest.

Nwude’s accomplices were Emmanuel Ofolue, Nzeribe Okoli, and Obum Osakwe, along with the husband and wife duo, Christian Ikechukwu Anajemba and Amaka Anajemba, with Christian later being assassinated.

The criminal gang was able to convince the director of the Brazilian bank to part with the money.

Nwude has become Nigeria's fraud kingpin after pulling off one of the biggest 'deals' in history.

Nwude used part of his loot to acquire block shares in Union Bank of Nigeria and that earned him position of a non-executive director in the bank.

How did Sakaguchi find out he was a victim of one of the largest scam in the world?

In 1997, the Spanish Banco Santander wanted to take over the Banco Noroeste and a joint board meeting was held in December of that year. Officials of the Spanish bank noted that half of the Brazilian bank’s capital was at Cayman Islands unmonitored. This raised questions as this was two-fifths of Noroeste's total value.

Investigation began and was carried out in Brazil, Britain, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United States. Although the sale of the Bank still went on as the owners of the bank paid $242 million bill, the nak still collapsed in 2001.

The birth of the EFCC

In 2002, the then president, Olusegun Obasanjo saw to the establishment of an anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Nwude’s fraud case one of the first to be investigated and in 2004, all members of the gang were arraigned before an Abuja High Court on 86 counts of "fraudulently seeking advance fees" and 15 counts of bribery related to the case . Although they pleaded not guilty, they were warned not to attempt to bribe court officials as it was suspected that money was going round.

In 2005, Amaka confessed to helping Anajemba and was asked to repay $25.5 million and also sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

Nwude attempted to bribe Nuhu Ribadu, the then chairman of the EFCC, with $75,000 cash but the latter refused and Nwude was charged with attempted bribery as well as attempt to kidnap a prosecuting witness.

Following Sakaguchi's witness, Nwude finally pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five concurrent sentences of five years and was also asked to pay $10 million fine to the federal government.

He was released from prison in 2006 and filed a case to reclaim his assets insisting some of them were acquired before the criminal act. He has so far been able to reclaim $167 million.

Aftermath

A land dispute in the town of Ukpo in the Dunukofia area with Abagana community turned bloody when over 200 men invaded the community killing four policemen and the security guard at the construction site in 2016. The Anambra state government fingered Nwude as the ringleader and he was subsequently arrested and arraigned on 27 charges including murder and terrorism. He is being held at Awka prison as the court case is still on.

While Nwude’s criminal exploit was not the first in the country, it signified the rise in international financial crime and popularise the advanced fee fraud syndrome with Nigeria's name associated with it.

GEORGIA OPPOSITION REJECT ELECTION RESULT
~2.5 mins read
Georgia opposition rejects election results, calls for protests

____The governing Georgian Dream party is leading Georgia’s parliamentary election with a vote share of just over 50 percent, preliminary results showed on Saturday.

The opposition, however, rejected those results and said it planned to protest.

With almost 44 percent of the votes in, data from the Central Election Commission (CEC) gave the Georgian Dream party 50.58 percent of the vote and the largest opposition party United National Movement (UNM) 24.92 percent.

Several other opposition parties managed to clear the 1 percent threshold for membership in parliament.

The governing party – founded by Georgia’s richest man, Bidzina Ivanishvili – declared victory soon after polls closed across the former Soviet republic on Saturday and four exit polls put it in first place in a tight race.

“Georgia has made me a worthy choice, and that Georgian Dream founded by me is a worthy dream. Georgian voters, who would not make the wrong choice today, expressed support for worthy people,” Ivanishvili told a crowd of cheering supporters in the capital, Tiblisi.

But it was not clear whether the governing party would secure the votes needed to form a single-party government.

The opposition said the results did not correspond with reality.

Nika Melia, a UNM member, called on supporters to gather in central Tiblisi to protest the vote on Sunday.

“We won’t accept this result and call on people to come to Rustaveli avenue at 4 pm” (1200 GMT), she told reporters after consultations with other opposition leaders.

‘Not a real picture’

David Kirtadze, another member of UNM, said: “This is not a real picture and these results don’t reflect the will of Georgian people.”

Earlier, he had tried to interrupt the head of the CEC head when she was announcing the preliminary results, and was forced by guards to leave the conference hall.

The opposition claimed it received enough votes in total to form a coalition.
More than 30 opposition parties, led by the UNM, the largest and strongest opposition force, had announced on Friday that they would not go into coalition with the governing party after the election.

Al Jazeera’s Robin Forestier-Walker, reporting from Tiblisi earlier on Saturday, said most voters were able to cast their ballots “freely and in safety”, though there were some violent scenes between supporters of rival parties.

He added: “Georgia is likely to have a more diverse parliament, but the politicians will now have to focus on immediate challenges – soaring COVID infections and a bleak outlook for the economy.”

The country’s economy has been hit hard by the spread of the coronavirus and is forecast by the government to contract by 4 percent in 2020.

The government’s popularity has waned, and opponents accuse it of mishandling the economy, selective justice, a weak foreign policy and stamping on dissent with the violent dispersal of protests.

Critics said Ivanishvili, who does not hold a government post, runs the South Caucasus country of 3.7 million people from behind the scenes, an accusation denied by Georgian Dream, which has governed for two consecutive terms.

A fifth of Georgian territory is controlled by pro-Russian separatists following a short war with Russia in 2008.

Both the government and the opposition would like to see Georgia join the European Union and NATO, but such moves would be strongly resisted by Moscow. Georgian Dream also favours closer ties with Russia. ,

Chelsea's No 1 EDOUARD MENDY Comment On Relationship With KEPA
~1.6 mins read

Chelsea's new No 1 Mendy insists he has a 'very good relationship' with Kepa 💪😍

New Chelsea No 1 Edouard Mendy insists he has a blossoming relationship with Kepa Arrizabalaga – despite him taking the Spaniard's spot between the sticks.

Frank Lampard signed Mendy from Rennes last month following an error-strewn season for Kepa, who occasionally surrendered his place to Willy Caballero.

The Senegal international has kept two clean sheets in his first three games, with Lampard confirming he is now first choice.

But Mendy, speaking for the first time since signing, said Chelsea's goalkeepers have put aside their rivalry in pursuit of collective glory.

'I have a very good relationship with Kepa,' he said.

'The group of goalkeepers we have, we're all very open and all of us understand the team is the most important thing here and doing what is right for the group.

'Our relationships are all very good, we work well together and we're pushing each other every day to improve ourselves and improve each other. We know as goalkeepers we have to stay unified and united and that is what is happening at the moment.'

Mendy made his debut in last month's EFL Cup defeat by Tottenham before keeping a clean sheet in their victory over Crystal Palace.

Injury then struck, keeping Mendy out until this week's Champions League goalless draw with Sevilla.

In his absence, Kepa returned for the 3-3 draw against Southampton, when he made another error as Lampard's side suffered more defensive calamity.

Now fit again, Mendy hopes to repay Chelsea's faith – and inspire a new generation of African goalkeepers to join English football.

'I can't tell you why there are so few African goalkeepers in England but when you look at the other leagues across Europe there are more,' he said.

'I'm the only African goalkeeper in the Premier League and there is a responsibility I feel because there is expectation surrounding that. I need to make sure I carry on working hard, do my best in training and matches so that other goalkeepers can follow me into this league and have this opportunity.'

XI JINPING-CHINA IS READY FOR WAR
~2.1 mins read
Xi Jinping the president of China says China is ready to fight a war and will never be afraid of war and would never allow it's sovereignty, security and development interests to be undermined as tension rise after US sold weapons worth 1.8 billion dollars to Taiwan an island China consider it's own.

This comes after a tough talking Xi reminded US and the world of what happened in 1950s during Korean war where US was repeatedly warned by China not come close to it's doorstep but never listened forcing China to enter the war which ended dividing the Korean peninsula.

Xi said that he will not allow any act of unilateralism, monopolism and bullying would not work and would only lead to a dead end.

Xi said that let the people of the world know that  the people of China are now organized and not to be trifled with quoting Mao Zedong the founding father of China.

There has been a big debate among analysts as to whether China was prepared for the war due to its cost but from Xi Jinping perspective, US hears when you talk from position of strengthen, US and China have so many disagreements on many issues like Taiwan, Hong Kong national security law, human rights, technology, pandemic handling, diplomatic and security rivelies which has increased tensions of recent.

As China celebrated it's 70 anniversary after the end of Korean war, Xi Jinping said that 70 years ago the imperialist invaders fired on our door step of anew China, the Chinese people understood that you must use the language the invaders understand to fight a war with war  and stop invasion by force, earning peace and security through victory.

Xi Jinping said Chinese people will not create trouble but nor are we afraid and no matter the difficulties or challenges that we face, our legs will not shake and our backs will not bend.

Xi Jinping repeatedly encouraged the rapid modernization of China armed forces and China's defence security to world class military because according to Xi Jinping with out a strong army, there can be no strong motherland China.

Before China intervened in Korean war, Mao Zedong the founding father of China said that if the lips are gone, so will the teeth grow cold so more than 2 million Chinese troops were deployed to the war which ended in 1953 with armistice but not atreaty which means technically North Korea and South Korea are still both at war.

Xi Jinping said that after arudous war, North Korea and Chinese troops armed to teeth defeated their opponents shattering the myth of invisibility of US military and forcing the invaders to sign a armistice agreement on 27 July 1953.

The problem is that Western countries led by US have always misinterpreted and misjudged China's intentions which have always resulted in to paying a big price like Vietnam war, Korea war, trade war, pandemic control and their influence in the world.

BUHARI Address The Nation Following The Recent Unrest Across The Country
~5.0 mins read
ADDRESS TO THE NATION BY HIS EXCELLENCY, MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA ON THE ENDSARS PROTESTS, 22ND OCTOBER, 2020

Fellow Nigerians,

It has become necessary for me to address you having heard from many concerned Nigerians and having concluded a meeting with all the Security Chiefs.

2. I must warn those who have hijacked and misdirected the initial, genuine and well - intended protest of some of our youths in parts of the country, against the excesses of some members of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

3. On Monday 12th October, I acknowledged the genuine concerns and agitations of members of the public regarding the excessive use of force by some members of SARS.

4. The choice to demonstrate peacefully is a fundamental right of citizens as enshrined in Section 40 of our Constitution and other enactments; but this right to protest also imposes on the demonstrators the responsibility to respect the rights of other citizens, and the necessity to operate within the law.

5. As a democratic government, we listened to, and carefully evaluated the five-point demands of the protesters. And, having accepted them, we immediately scrapped SARS, and put measures in place to address the other demands of our youth.

6. On approving the termination of SARS, I already made it clear that it was in line with our commitment to the implementation of extensive Police reforms.

7. Sadly, the promptness with which we have acted seemed to have been misconstrued as a sign of weakness and twisted by some for their selfish unpatriotic interests.

8. The result of this is clear to all observers: human lives have been lost; acts of sexual violence have been reported; two major correctional facilities were attacked and convicts freed; public and private properties completely destroyed or vandalised; the sanctity of the Palace of a Peace Maker, the Oba of Lagos has been violated. So-called protesters have invaded an International Airport and in the process disrupted the travel plans of fellow Nigerians and our visitors.

9. All these executed in the name of the ENDSARS protests. I am indeed deeply pained that innocent lives have been lost. These tragedies are uncalled for and unnecessary. Certainly, there is no way whatsoever to connect these bad acts to legitimate expression of grievance of the youth of our country.

10. The spreading of deliberate falsehood and misinformation through the social media in particular, that this government is oblivious to the pains and plight of its citizens is a ploy to mislead the unwary within and outside Nigeria into unfair judgement and disruptive behaviour.

11. On the contrary, both our deeds and words have shown how committed this administration has been to the wellbeing and welfare of citizens, even with the steadily dwindling revenues, and the added responsibilities and restrictions due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

12. Government has put in place measures and initiatives principally targeted at youths, women and the most vulnerable groups in our society.  These included our broad plan to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in the next 10 years; the creation of N75 billion National Youth Investment Fund to provide opportunities for the youths and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Survival Fund, through which government is:

a. paying three months salaries of the staff of 100,000 micro, small - and medium - enterprises,
b. paying for the registration of 250,000 businesses at the Corporate Affairs Commission,
c. giving a grant of N30,000 to 100,000 artisans; and
d. guaranteeing market for the products of traders.

13. These are in addition to many other initiatives such as;
a. Farmermoni,
b. Tradermoni,
c. Marketmoni,
d. N-Power,
e. N-Tech and
f. N-Agro.

14. No Nigerian Government in the past has methodically and seriously approached poverty-alleviation like we have done.

15. With regard to the welfare of police personnel, the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission has been directed to expedite action on the finalization of the new salary structure of members of the Nigeria Police Force. The emoluments of other paramilitary services are also being reviewed upwards.

16. In order to underscore the importance of education in preparing youths for the future, this administration has come up with a new salary structure and other incentives for our teachers.

17. Let me at this point reaffirm the Federal Government’s commitment to preserving the unity of this country.

18. We will continue to improve good governance and our democratic process, including through sustained engagement.

19. We shall continue to ensure that liberty and freedom, as well as the fundamental rights of all citizens are protected.

20. But remember that government also has the obligation to protect lives and properties, as well as the right of citizens to go about their daily businesses freely and protected from acts of violence.

21. To our neighbours in particular, and members of the international community, many of whom have expressed concern about the ongoing development in Nigeria, we thank you and urge you all to seek to know all the facts available before taking a position or rushing to judgment and making hasty pronouncements.

22. In the circumstances, I would like to appeal to protesters to note and take advantage of the various well-thought-out initiatives of this administration designed to make their lives better and more meaningful, and resist the temptation of being used by some subversive elements to cause chaos with the aim of truncating our nascent democracy.

23. For you to do otherwise will amount to undermining national security and the law and order situation. Under no circumstances will this be tolerated.

24. I therefore call on our youths to discontinue the street protests and constructively engage government in finding solutions. Your voice has been heard loud and clear and we are responding.

25. And I call on all Nigerians to go about their normal businesses, and enjoin security agencies to protect lives and properties of all law abiding citizens without doing harm to those they are meant to protect. Let me pay tribute to officers of the Nigeria Police Force who have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.

26. I would like to thank those state Governors, traditional and religious leaders who have appealed for calm and restraint. I also thank youth leaders who have restrained their followers from taking the law into their hands.

27. This government respects and will continue to respect all the democratic rights and civil liberties of the people, but it will not allow anybody or groups to disrupt the peace of our nation.

Thank you all. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

FBI-RUSSIA AND IRAN HAS HIJACKED THE ELECTION.

Trump wants to win by relying on Russia and Iran

____With just 10 days to go before the election, pro-Trump extremists are threatening Day Democrat voters in various states.

Proud Boys, a white supremacist group supporting President Donald Trump, has sent many emails to Democrat voters threatening them.

Emails sent to Pennsylvania, Arizona, Alaska and Florida warned President Donald Trump to vote.

The email further mentions that the sender of the mysterious mail has a chance to enter the voter history. If the president does not vote, you may be attacked.

Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the emails sent to intimidate and threaten Democrats.

The U.S. government has said in a statement that Russia and Iran may be behind the "threatening" emails.

Officials said Wednesday night that Iran had sent the emails through threats and intimidation.

At the same time, the government warned that Russia and Iran had collected voter information. This information could be used to threaten the upcoming election.

The FBI, as well as the Florida Sheriff's Office, is investigating the allegations. They say the emails may have been sent from outside the United States.

The emails sent were claimed by Proud Boys, but the group's authorities have denied sending such emails.

"By no means do we want to convey that we recommend for the mother to be inactive," he said.

He claims that Proud Boys does not use such mass emails and mass messaging methods. We don't even do that to ourselves.

CHINA TESTED WORLD FIRST SUICIDE SWARM DRONE
~3.9 mins read
  • Loitering munitions, more commonly known as suicide drones, fill a capability gap between cruise missiles and traditional fixed-wing combat drones by lingering over the battlefield.
  • China is not alone in exploring swarm drone capabilities, but it has made significant strides in recent years.
  • China has a suicide drone filled with explosives that can loiter over the battlefield and hunt for targets, and a defense firm recently test-launched a swarm of them out of the back of a truck.

China Academy of Electronics and Information Technology, a subsidiary of the Chinese state-owned China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, has released a video of a test conducted in September, during which a Chinese light tactical vehicle launched a swarm of loitering munitions, commonly known as suicide or kamikaze drones.

The video of the test, which was first reported by The War Zone , also showed drones being deployed from a helicopter.

The launcher on the truck has a total of 48 cells, suggesting that a single truck could launch dozens of loitering munitions, which fill the gap between cruise missiles and more unmanned combat aerial vehicles.

Loitering munitions are fitted with extendable wings and a camera and carry high-explosive warheads that can linger over an area while an operator searches for potential targets.

It is unclear exactly what type of drone was used in the test, but it is reminiscent of the 20-pound CH-901 suicide drone, China's first tactical attack drone.

This heavy loitering munition, which was unveiled about four years ago, can be used against personnel, light vehicles, and potentially enemy armor. The CH-901 is similar to the Switchblade, a US system that was first unveiled in 2011 and has been used in combat, although the Chinese drone is much heavier.

The CH-901, which may or may not have been the weapon recently test-fired en masse, can spend two hours in the air and fly at speeds just under 100 mph, the South China Morning Post reported .

Toward the end of the CAEIT video, a swarm of at least 11 drones can be seen flying together. An operator equipped with a tablet, which appears to be the command interface platform, selects several targets for the drones to engage.

It is not clear whether this system has already been deployed with the People's Liberation Army. Chinese military insiders told SCMP that China is still trying to overcome various technical issues, such as slow-to-react artificial intelligence and the need for mor effective counter-jamming capabilities.

China has made great strides in the area of swarming drones in recent years. Not only did CAEIT set a record by operating 200 fixed-wing drones at once two years ago, but China has, on more than one occasion, demonstrated large swarm operations with standard quadcopters.

China is not alone, though, in its pursuit of swarm drone capabilities.

The Office of Naval Research has been developing multi-tube launchers for Coyote drones as part of its Low-Cost UAV Swarming Technology (LOCUST) program, which the Navy first demonstrated in 2015. The drones can be launched from both ground- and ship-based cells.

Other military outfits are also looking at various swarm capabilities. For example, one Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) program explored launching dozens of recoverable Gremlin drones from a C-130 Hercules.

Militaries are interested in swarming drones because they offer a lot of capability, be it reconnaissance, communications jamming, or kinetic strike, and potential defenses against these combat systems are insufficient, disproportionately expensive or still very immature.

STRIPE HAS ACQUIRED NIGERIA FINTECH PAYSTACK FOR A $200M+
    ~1.5 mins read

Stripe is stepping up its expansion into Africa through the acquisition of Lagos-based payments firm Paystack in a deal reportedly worth more than $200 million.

Like Stripe, Paystack provides APIs that let merchants, with just a few lines of code, build online payment features.

More than 60,000 businesses in Nigeria and Ghana use Paystack to collect online and offline payments. The team has developed APIs enabling developers to create online custom checkout experiences, build automated recurring billing systems, instantly send bulk transfers to any bank account in Nigeria, and verify the identity of customers.

Already processing more than half of all online transactions in Nigeria, the company is planning to expand across the continent and has already started a pilot with businesses in South Africa.

Stripe led an $8 million Series A funding round for Paystack in 2018 and has now decided to buy the Nigerian outfit to take advantage of a market that has huge potential, with online commerce on the continent growing at 21% year-over-year.

Paystack will continue to operate independently. Over time, its capabilities will be embedded in Stripe’s programmable platform for global money movement that currently spans 42 countries.

Matt Henderson, business lead, Emea, Stripe, says: "In just five years, Paystack has done what many companies could not achieve in decades. Their tech-first approach, values, and ambition greatly align with our own. This acquisition will give Paystack resources to develop new products, support more businesses and consolidate the hyper-fragmented African payments market."

Shola Akinlade, CEO, Paystack, adds: "We believe deeply that with the right tools, African creators, developers, and entrepreneurs can do incredible things. Leveraging Stripe’s resources and deep expertise, we’re excited to accelerate our geographic expansion and introduce more payment channels, more value-added services, and deeper integrations with global platforms."
