Sun Enters New 25-year Solar Cycle.

Scientists say the sun has entered a new 25-year cycle and will enter a period marked by more sunspots and eruptions.
Experts from Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research made the announcement in a statement in Bremen on Wednesday.
The sun’s activity has been ramping up over the past nine months as it moves out of a minimum period of activity, experts said.
The sun alternates between 11-year periods of higher and lower activity, the scientists said, and the star passed its lowest point of activity in December 2019.
However, the next 25-year solar cycle is likely to be “just as tame†as the previous cycle, the institute predicted, with the most active period expected between November 2024 and March 2026.
What happens on the surface of the sun also affects the Earth.
“In phases of high activity, violent bursts of particles and radiation from the sun can also make themselves felt on Earth,†said MPS scientist Robert Cameron.
In the worst case, solar storms cause technical systems, such as satellites, to fail. Astronauts can also be harmed.
The new solar cycle is the 25th since reliable solar observations began.
For the past 30 years, the U.S. space agency NASA and the ocean and atmosphere agency NOAA have had a group of experts forecast solar activity for the coming years.
This is not easy because “our star’s behaviour is characterised by a peculiar interplay of reliability and capriciousness†MPS said.

Eko Electricity Distribution Company says it was not responsible for the disconnection of power supply to Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday, which occurred shortly before #EndSARS protesters were attacked at the location.
EKEDC General Manager, Corporate Communications, Godwin Idemudia, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that youths protesting against police brutality came under gun fire while the light within the vicinity was turned off.
Idemudia said the Electricity Distribution Company was saddened by the gruesome events that happened at the Lekki Toll Gate.
He said that the DisCo was not in any way culpable.
“We will like to respectfully and categorically state that EKEDC does not handle power supply to the Lekki Toll Gate and they independently generate their own power supply through Independent Power Projects (IPPs).
“The rest of the Lekki area supplied by EKEDC had power supply from us throughout the night, save for any areas where there were technical faults.
“We are extremely saddened by the turn of events yesterday and we stand with all well-meaning Nigerians who want a better future for our dear nation,†he said.
Idemudia said EKEDC would continue to provide best possible electricity supply, customer service and fault resolution for as long as it was safe for its staff to leave their homes and families and arrive at their work locations safely.
