THE UNIFYING DENOMINATOR (LOVE)
~1.9 mins read
Love is a vague concept. Definitively, It is like a macrocosm with several microcosms. It is like a tree with several branches. Contextualy, suffice it to say that it is a positive emotional feeling of care for someone; a person, a group or a people. It’s the bedrock of your willingness to fix something you feel is broken, instead of just throwing it away. This is the type of love our society needs. The type that serves as a base, as a foundation, as a starting point for a life of togetherness. This type of love concentrates more on our sympathy, empathy, selflessness, goodwill and forgiveness towards one another.
Not only is love being undervalued in our society, it is being pushed down our list of priorities. It is being passed over for ideologies, for possessions, for self-aggrandizement, and inhumane activities. The thing about love is, it is one of the very few things that all of us could share, regardless of where we are from, what we do or don’t believe in, or any other circumstances. It binds us together as human beings. It is something that every last one of us craves.
Love is Mary Selessor, leaving her comfort zone to stop the killing of twins in Calabar; that's sympathy!
Love is Mother Theresa, putting the lives of people before hers; that's sacrifice!
Love is Nelson Mandela, rooting for peace despite being hurt; that's forgiveness!
Love is Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh, placing Nigerians first, during the ebola menace; that's selflessness!
Love is you, giving your 50 naira to hungry person in the streets, not because you have so much yourself but, because you're trying to understand their situation; that's empathy!
Love lives in the heart and survives by our actions.
In the words of Aberjhani, "Love is our most unifying and empowering common spiritual denominator". The more we ignore it's potential to bring greater balance and deeper meaning to human existence, the more likely we are to continue to define history as one long inglorious record of man’s inhumanity to man.
We are from several and different parts of the country but, we can unanimously coubtrubute to the course of national development, and our utmost task is to uphold our societal mores and propagate unity, peace and progress. Howbiet, without love this is a mirage.
A society starved of love would not thrive in any facet whatsoever. For it is the catalyst for accelerated growth.
In the words of Dike Chukwumerije, "No culture is older than being human". Here, our humanity is what binds us together in love.
