~1.1 mins read
In our day-to-day activities,we tend to come across different food crops and materials. Many of these crops have their native name which they are well known for, while others are just known by their English or botanical names only.
Same goes for okro. Popularly known for thickening soup and being used as soup itself in major parts of the world like the southern United States, parts of Africa and the Middle East, the Caribbean and South America, the crop is used as a major dish.
What many people fail to know is that the word "okra" is not the real word for this crop plant. With the botanical name set at Abelmoschus esculentus, its nickname,"okra" has gone ahead to overshadow its real English name,or the name that can be found in the English dictionary.
Okra's real name is called "Ladies' fingers or ochro",and as a flowering plant in the mallow family,it also possesses edible green pods.
Ladies Fingers can also be used as sauce for boiled yam and cocoyam, and most times used in thickening soup or making a full dish on its own.
So,the correct name for the plant is not " okra" but " ladies' fingers" which is widely accepted and also used in the English dictionary.
