The ecstasy of digging into my books and finding crazy theories of Aristotle and his likes have long faded as the months passed.😣

For some, they are glad Mama and Papa don't get to ask a comrade like them to wash plates and do other chores. Lol😅

For some, they are glad they'd finally round up their last days in their institutions. 😊

For some, they are glad to resume school. A fresh dawn they can't wait to experience.😏

For me, I feel somewhat in between. Few weeks to prepare for exams with a head as blank as a slate. As in eh head block, nothing dey.. Don't laugh! 😩

I know there are some in my shoes. This is what ASUU strike has done to us. It's not our fault anyways...just so unfortunate.💔

Aside the academic retrogression, financially, mentally, it's draining. 😭

Sadly, they are fighting for their own good and interest. Bunch of selfish organization. 😏💔

MOTHER TONGUE INTERFERENCE IN THE SPOKEN ENGLISH OF ONITSHA MARKET WOMEN

 

Over the Years,there have been different views and definition of 'language’ yet none is sacrosanct. Sapir (1921) considers it “a purely human and non instinctive method of communicating ideas, emotions, and desires by means of a system of voluntarily produced symbols.There are over 525 native languages spoken in Nigeria. Today, English Language is used in almost everything done in Nigeria, and it still comes in contact with our indigenous languages to the extent when these speakers speak, it reflects on their speech,hence the Mother Tongue interference,which will be broadly covered in this study.

 

The Mother Tongue interference is an underlying speech impairment, affecting the proper and correct production of the Spoken English;The Onitsha Market Women hence finds it very hard to communicate in the English Language without their Mother Tongues interfering.

 

This study is aimed at explicating and quantifying the influence of Mother Tongue (Native Language) on the Spoken English.. This study doesn't concern itself on how utterances are being borrowed.

 

 This study will cover the positive and the negative effect of Mother Tongue Interference on the Spoken English language.

 

Having explored the study aims and objective, the method of data collection solely depends on the primary source as a recording for analysis will be done using a tape recorder and audio cassette to record natural conversation.

 

Chomsky's Linguistic Theory argues that language acquisition is governed by universal, underlying grammatical rules that are common to all typically developing humans. Across many different cultures, there are a number of linguistic developmental similarities. Chomsky argues that these similarities are due to the presence of an innate language-acquisition mechanism housed in the brain called the Language Acquisition Device (LAD). 

 

In conclusion, at the end of this research, the influence of Mother Tongue in speech production, its positive and negative effect on the Spoken English, grammar et al. will be expatiated.
