Pad Poverty! Sanitary Pads Campaign For Under Privileged Girls
~3.0 mins read
This is a Campaign
It's an established scientific fact that 61 percent of vaginal infections are as a result of the use of dirty rags and tissues, and the use of ordinary papers in lieu of sanitary pads during their menstrual periods.
Little did many women and girls know that infections drastically increase due to the use of rags for such practice which exposes them to both urinary and vaginal infections.
From a random sampling and research, many school girls are not at all sensitised on hygienic ways to adopt in handling their menstrual periods.
Owing to series of staining during their menses as a result of inadequate products cum materials to use ,
Sometimes adults too don't go to work or take permission from work to avoid staining.
From my research, One out of 10 girls drop out of school due to menstruation. 10 percent miss school in countries with high index of poverty
This article is aimed at providing the needed education on menstral hygiene and good disposal of the sanitary pads
First, how do we achieve this ??
Be responsible for a child.
Pick one girl child from your family or community, make a pledge, fill a form and through you that child will have a life time supply of sanitary pads., or better put, giving a girl child a set of sanitary pad every month. Some of us have sisters, nieces, aunties and female cousins, you can start caring for their sanitary needs especially girls below the ages of 16 and 18.
This as well can be extended to homeless women, who getting their period done can be very daunting and challenging, and not washing during menstruation can lead to infections.
A lot of us may not understand why we have to talk about this, or being pad broke or talking about pad poverty cum reduction of its price.
Well, without mince words, I've experienced such scenario before and have come to terms about ending such ugly trend among our girls and women, because one would wonder why such vast need exist the fact that menstruation is a taboo topic of discussion is one of the biggest challenges facing the women of representative age...
Poor access to affordable menstrual sanitary products is a global problem. About 100millon people within reproductive age lack access to adequate menstrual sanitary products and this is fiercely prevalent in countries like Indian, Pakistan and most African countries.
I understand, how would these poor beings afford sanitary pads when their feeding havent been met
A. Analysing the percentage of use and of menstrual pad will be a function of a major parameter which is affordability and availability.
B. Poverty level in Africa and India has increased drastically, recording an average of over 50 percent of the population surviving on or below a dollar per day.
C. Nigeria and India for example, 7 out of any 10 women on the average had no job
My country Nigeria and India , is so impoverished that on the scale of analyis, if someone lives below a dollar or exactly a dollar which is 370 naira and a sanitaŕy pad costs 350. How then will she be able to feed herself and as well afford a sanitary pad??
Okay, let's say she feeds herself first, as food comes first because of its higher priority, if she would eat and feed on the available 370 naira, how then would she clean her self up??
D. The need to avail pads to the less privilege should be fully embraced as it's a great need.
E. Although there have always been alternatives, even before now, but then I'm sure there are a whole lot of dangers contained in the practice of this culture.
PS; If you wish to join the sanitary pad donation team and contribution towards making sanitary pads free for girls and women who can't afford them vis-a-vis provision of access to low cost sanitary pads towards maintaining good health, please be free to contact me.
With the one dollar to 370 naira rating, how can a lady even afford soaps and other basic cleaning materials to practise the old culture cleanly?? Your guess is as good as mine.
