If You Bite Your Fingernails, You Really Need To Read These Facts.
~4.5 mins read
Stop biting your fingernails. It has several dangers to you. Do you bite your finger nails? Here are some facts you need to know about it.

In this day and age, a lot of people have a habit of biting their finger nails, even to the point that it doesn’t cover the finger properly, and some adults might even encourage this. And aside from the fact that simply trimmed natural fingernails look far better, there are other benefits of the fingernails, and consequences of nail bitting. After all why are the nails there if we don’t need them?

USES:

1. Sense of touch.

Yes it’s true. Finger nails being located at the back of the finger tip really does increase the finger tip’s sense of touch, as the finger tips are the most sensitive part of the hands. Excessively cutting the finger nails reduces that sense.

2. Grip.

The strategic position of the finger nails also helps give the fingers a lot of support, and obviously people with longer finger nails can get a better grip of an object, so it would be ok to moderately trim them for social reasons.

DANGERS OF CUTTING THEM. (specifically, biting them off with your teeth)

1. Corrosion.

(Minor case)

Nail biting can prove to be very disastrous to your teeth on the long run. Finger nails aren’t just prices of soft meat, you know. While you are biting your finger nails, you should know that they are quite tough, and depending on your diet and genes, they could be tougher than average.

Continuous biting of the nails can severely damage the teeth, even to the point of cracking the enamel (outer layer), and this doesn’t heal (yes, that’s a serious problem).

2. Infection i.

Let’s not for a second forget that the mouth is full of germs. From a bacterial count point of view, it is the dirtiest part of our body.

Bacteria need food to survive, and a canal where food is grinded and passes through is a hot spot for the survival of the bacteria. Some of these bacteria in the mouth can easily infect the fingers if you were to mistakenly cut yourself while excessively biting your nails.

But even if you don’t bite your nails, it is recommended to brush your teeth twice a day and use dental floss to clear the ridges in between the teeth.

3. Infection ii.

While the mouth can infect the fingers, the fingers can very much infect the mouth as well.

The hands are the busiest part of our body, so it’s not surprising that they are packed full with germs. Some of the germs on the hand can easily go down your throat went you put your fingers in your mouth in the act of biting your finger nails.

Several of these bacterial infections can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, cholera and dysentery, among others.

It is adviseable to wash your hands frequently with soap and water, and brush your finger nail to limit the germs compiling in them

Nail biting has been discovered to be a habit that usually manifests itself when someone is bored, stressed out, nervous, depressed, and in some cases concentrating.

HOW TO STOP NAIL BITING.

As a habit, biting of finger nails does have solutions.

While biting of finger nails requires both the hand and the mouth, you can task one or both of those two with something else in order to stop the habit.

You can keep your mouth busy with a chewing gum (don’t over do it my people!). Yes, try not to annoy people around you by popping bubbles, and don’t get another addiction to the chewing gum!

As for the hands, you can tap your fingers on a desk like surface if there one, drum lightly, or put something like a small rubber ball in your hand to keep it busy when you are stressed out or in any of the other conditions.

Trivia: The fingernails are an extension of the skin, mainly made up of carotene, and are equivalent to animal claws.
