2023 Presidency: South West Speakers Storm Ibadan, Rally Support For Tinubu
Former and current Speakers of State Houses of Assembly in the South West geo-political zone stormed Ibadan, the Oyo state capital on Wednesday, to drum support for the presidential ambition of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We reports that Tinubu who is the National leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ruled Lagos State between 1999 and 2007. Our correspondent reports that no fever than twenty current and past Speakers in the States’ Assemblies in the region attended the meeting on Wednesday. Among those present are Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, former Speakers of Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Mojeed Alabi and Hon. Najeem Salam, former Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Asimiyu Alarape and former speakers from Ondo and Ekiti, among others. Our correspondent recalls that some loyalists of the former Governor had last year visited two traditional rulers in Oyo State, drumming support for Tinubu. Obasa, who is the convener of the meeting held in Ibadan on Wednesday, noted that all former and current Speakers in the region had taken it upon themselves to support Tinubu presidency in 2023. The Lagos State Speaker added that Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) Foundation is meant to break the shackles of poverty in the country. Obasa who stated that though Tinubu has not given the go-ahead to kickstart any interest in the presidency, there is a need to deliberate on this all important issue on behalf of Tinubu. According to Obasa, all current and former speakers present should after the meeting go back to their respective states to set up the template that would see to the actualisation Tinubu mandate. The National Coordinator of BAT Movement, Ambassador Aliyu Saulawa, emphasized that the movement is ready to ensure power shift to the southwest and to be clinched by Tinubu. He lauded Tinubu’s option of supporting President Muhammadu Buhari rather than former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who would have done anything for Tinubu, to win his support. Saulawa said, “What was resolved at the meeting include, that power must shift to the south and that the southwest must produce the next president. “That Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, being a Yoruba man with the capacity, experience and means should be the candidate to be supported to emerge as the next president of Nigeria. “That Asiwaju Tinubu still needs to do more networking in Yoruba land, especially amongst serving and past governors so that voices of dissent can be reduced to the barest minimum. “That all stakeholders here present should go back home and start the Asiwaju Tinubu presidential project pending when he will come out public to agree to contest.â€

Jubilations As Afe Babalola University Records Scientific Breakthrough On Coronavirus
The Chemo-Genomics Research Institute of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, CRIA, in collaboration with the ABUAD Multi-system Hospital, AMSH, have gained new understanding about the reasons humans are more vulnerable to infections by the new variant of COVID-19, popularly known as N501Y SARS-CoV-2 mutant. One of the reasons provided by the bio-medical scientists and researchers, led by Dr. Olaposi Omotuyi, is that the new variant is 80 times more effective at binding to human cells and is characterized by faster human-to-human transmission, more rapid progression of symptoms and death. Since the country is not on total lockdown, the scientists and researchers advised that people should adhere to the laid down non-pharmacologic preventive procedures. The Bio-medical scientists and Researchers at the two-sister institutions took advantage of the cutting-edge Bio-computing platform at the research institute to calculate and re-evaluate the interaction between SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein receptor-binding domain (RBD) and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 surface (ACE2) for the wild type in comparison with the new variant. One of the outstanding discoveries of the research efforts is the improved RBD binding with ACE2 following N501 mutation. This scientific breakthrough becomes more important and germane bearing in mind the coming of the second wave of COVID-19 which boasts of more deaths and infection than the parent pandemic. In the heart of this second wave is the change in structure to the genetic material of the parent virus SARS-CoV-2. Although quite a number of changes in structure have been in existence before now, of higher importance is the spike-glycoprotein N501Y change. The spike glycoprotein is responsible for recognizing and binding of human cells at the angiotensin-converting enzyme2 surface (ACE2); thus, making human beings more vulnerable to the infection. Another critical insight gained in the study is the role of N501Ymutation in altering the interface water dynamics. It should be noted that interface water acts as a stabilizing force for protein-protein interaction through enhanced hydrophobic attractions. The free energy calculation showed that N501Y-SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein RBD would bind ACE2 80-times more efficiently compared to the wild type. According to Omotuyi, these findings should therefore serve as a wake-up call for enforcement of COVID-19 protocol by all institutions, stressing that at the level of individuals, personal protection must be enforce nod at all times.
