7 Benefits Of Turmeric Or Saffron And How To Use It Daily
~2.8 mins read
Turmeric is a plant of the same ginger family, native to India and
Indonesia. After drying, the roots of turmeric are converted into a powder,
also called turmeric, which is used as a seasoning.
The turmeric root powder is the main ingredient in curry, the famous blend of Indian spices used in a variety of dishes originating from this cuisine. This powder is not only widely used in cooking but is also known for its medicinal properties, especially because it has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect.
One caution to take when purchasing turmeric is that it can also be called saffron, but we should not confuse it with saffron. Turmeric is an orange powder that is sold in sachets or bulk in supermarkets and trade shows at a generally affordable price. Saffron spice, on the other hand, is a red powder, sold at specialized and much higher prices.
Get to know some of the main benefits of turmeric already proven by science and how to use this spice in your daily.
1. Anti-Inflammatory Effects
Although inflammation is a process that helps our body fight harmful microorganisms and foreign particles, it can bring serious problems by becoming chronic.
Turmeric contains curcumin, a substance with a strong anti-inflammatory effect. This component acts on the cellular mechanisms and can block processes related to diseases associated with chronic inflammation, such as various cancers, metabolic syndrome, and Alzheimer's disease.
2. Antioxidant properties
Free radicals are components that react with fatty acids, proteins, and DNA itself, causing oxidation. This process leads to damage related to aging and the onset of many diseases, including cancer.
Curcumin present in turmeric helps fight free radicals in two ways: its chemical structure can neutralize these harmful molecules and also stimulates the proper functioning of the body's antioxidant mechanisms.
3. Protection of brain function
Some studies have shown that curcumin can increase brain levels of BDNF hormone, which is responsible for the formation of new connections between neurons and also the development of new cells.
BDNF deficiency appears to be involved in a greater tendency to develop depression and Alzheimer's disease. In this way, saffron can help fight these diseases, as well as other conditions related to aging.
4. Reduced risk of heart disease
Curcumin has a positive effect on the endothelial cell layer that lines within the chambers of the heart, arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels, which contribute to the regulation of blood pressure and coagulation.
In addition, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of this substance are also important factors in the prevention of heart disease.
5. Prevention and control of cancer
In the case of different cancers, research indicates that curcumin can prevent and even treat some tumors through different modes of action. For the treatment, studies are suggesting that this substance can reduce the growth of a tumor and its molecular spread.
Further evidence was found that this component would be able to lower metastasis (when cancer has spread) and prevent the development of blood vessels within the tumor, which contributes to the destruction of the mass of malignant cells.
In terms of prevention, the researchers saw that the daily intake of 4 grams of curcumin is linked to a 40% reduction in benign lesions in the colon, which could become colon cancer.
6. Relief of Arthritis Symptoms
The beneficial effect of turmeric on inflammatory processes also helps to relieve the symptoms of arthritis, which is inflammation of the joints.
In rheumatoid arthritis patients, curcumin was even more effective than traditional anti-inflammatory drugs, relieving stiffness, and swelling.
7. Fight against depression
Among other factors, depression is related to a decrease in the levels of the BNDF hormone and shrinkage of the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved in learning and memory.
Some studies show that curcumin can increase BNDF levels, which would help reverse these disease-related changes. Also, this compound can also improve the action of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters linked to feelings of well-being and relaxation.
