Scene 14

(At Adanne's house, Mary welcomes Mr. Gabriel, serves him a drink and informs Adanne of his presence)

 

Mr. Gabriel: (Trying his best to lighten the mood) A nice place you have here.

Adanne: Thank you sir.

Mr. Gabriel: (Chuckles) After all that drama you witnessed? C'mon now, I believe it's time you dropped the honorifics on me.

Adanne: (Laughs) Alright, Gabriel.

Mr. Gabriel: Thank you. (Sips from his drink and drops the glass on his table...pauses for a while and continues) Collin sent in his resignation letter today. Apparently, he'd been processing his resignation for a while now.

Adanne: (Perplexed) Oh!

Mr. Gabriel: I guess he feels it's high time he took responsibility for his actions.

Adanne: (Quietly) I guess.

Mr. Gabriel: But this doesn't prove that he feels remorse. (With a serious tone) He has to come apologize to you personally before I can let him off the hook.

Adanne: (Chuckles) Thanks for the effort. (Takes a deep breath and continues)  I may not have mentioned this before but, Collin and I go way back. We were classmates in secondary school. We met again a few years back and since then we'd been on close contact. He assisted me in getting this job and because of that, I felt indebted to him. Especially because he didn't make me feel wanted here even for a moment. Seeing the trick he pulled, I guess we're even now, and no one owes the other anything. I really had no idea he had feelings for me, plus, he's kind of secretive.

Mr. Gabriel: I understand. (Now looking at her) Besides it's impossible to not fall in love with an amazing person like you.

Adanne: (Smiles shyly) Thanks.

Mr. Gabriel: (Fakes a cough) So I guess we'll be seeing you around soon.

Adanne: Definitely. I just need some time to sort out my thoughts, that's all.

Mr. Gabriel: It's okay, no explanation needed. Just make sure to eat well and get enough rest. The office sends their greetings too.

Adanne: I will. My regards to everyone....

Mr. Gabriel: (Forces an envelope in her hand) Please accept this token, for all your troubles.

Adanne: (Opens it and sees a huge check) B..b..but this is huge sir..I can't possibly accept this..sir..

Mr. Gabriel: Well you have to. (Lying poorly) The office insisted. You don't want to make them sad, do you?

Adanne: N..no.. thank you sir, I'm grateful to everyone..I don't know what to say.

Mr. Gabriel: It's okay, just don't take too much time off. (Stands up) I have to get going now.

Adanne: (Standing up) Let me see you off.

Mr. Gabriel: (Cuts her short) No it's okay, really.

Adanne: Thank you so much..

(Mr. Gabriel leaves. Adanne is still smiling and Mary rushes to her side. They are both jumping and screaming happily)

 

Scene 15

At the office

Adanne steps into the building, she gets congratulatory wishes from almost everyone she walks by.

Ofonime: O my goodness Adanne, it's been a long two weeks without you! (She hugs Adanne) We're so happy to have you back.

Adanne: I missed all of you too. Thanks for all the wishes and presents, I appreciate. 

Collin is seen afar off clearing his desk, just then he approaches Adanne. Ofonime excuses the both of them)

Collin: I'm really sorry for everything Adanne. I shouldn't have come at you like that regardless of my feelings. Words fail me..

Adanne: Look Collin, I'll need some time to process everything. For now let's just not see each other. (She walks away, Collin is downcast)

 

Scene 16

At a restaurant

It's evening. The office is celebrating the transfer of certain employees to the new branch, including Adanne. Fela Kuti's Roforofo fight is heard playing in the background. There's a lot of food and drinks. Even karaoke speakers and microphones are available for those who want to sing. Adanne's best friend Mary, is there too.

Adanne: (Humming the lyrics of the song)

         ......Na two people dey yab so

               Na two people dey yab so

               Where dem dey yab, roforofo dey

               Where dem dey yab, roforofo dey....

Mary: I am still baffled, I can't believe Collin did that.

Adanne: Me too. Apparently, he paid off a cleaner to plant the bugs in my office. Together with his minion Bode, they both planned it together.

Mary: Haba, Collin of all people! I'm glad that Mr. Gabriel brought all of them to book.

Adanne: Yes. I'm really grateful for him.

Mary: Collin and Bode are lucky enough. Megahit Estates isn't suing them for defamation.

Adanne: I am sure Mr. Gabriel put in good word too, because it would've still affected GreenHill Housing if such news got out.

Mary: Very well then. So are you forgiving Collin?

Adanne: You know I won't put him in mind. (She heaves a heavy sigh) I have forgiven him, I just hope he learns how to tame that ego of his.

Mary: I hope so too. (she pauses) Enough of the sad talk, you've got to enjoy your day girl. This is the celebratory party of a verified boss lady! (They both laugh)

Adanne: You can say that again. You are looking at the soon-to-be manager of GreenHill Housing, branch two. (Raising her shoulders and turning around proudly)

Mary: So here's a cheer to new beginnings (raises up her glass)

Adanne: (Raising her glass) To new beginnings!

(They clink glasses and sip their drinks. Everyone is making merriment and dancing to the tune of 'we are family by sister sledge'. We are family...get up everybody and sing...) The lights fade gradually.

Scene 3

At a Coffee shop

Collin is sitting at a table with his friend Bode. They are having a lengthy conversation

Bode: Those snitches, I didn't expect anything less from them. For goodness sake, there wasn't a damn penalty in that messed up game! Rooney dissapointed me man, i need to drink on this one.

Collin: Bro, chill small jor.

Bode: Guy! I'm almost depressed!

Collin: (Laughing uncontrollably) Like I'm the one who told you to bet your last nickel in that hopeless match. I warned you man. When they say, listen to your elders, kids like you don't take heed.

Bode: Guy! Abeg forget that thing.

Collin: (Still laughing) What elders can see when sitting down, a child will climb the tallest tree and still won't sight it. In this case Bode, I'm your old man. (patting Bode's back mockingly)

Bode: Look at this one forming wise one. Shift jor! As for me, I know that I will come back for those snitches.

Collin: Come back for who? Like they know you exist. Bro, just stay humble and learn from the top guys like me. (Both men laugh, then there's a slight pause. Collin continues..)  Speaking of snitches, can you imagine that Gabriel guy.

Bode: You mean Gabriel Adebowle! As in the CEO of GreenHill Housing? 

Collin: Yes.

Bode: What's your beef with that guy? I mean, he's only manning up where you're playing a coward. Imagine crushing on a girl for like what, fifteen years! And you haven't mustered up the courage to tell her your feelings. I mean you've liked this girl for like half of your life. This is getting creepy man..

Collin: Look, it's not that simple.

Bode: How would you know that it is simple or hard without first trying? And to think you are the one giving me the wisdom lecture, with that outdated adage. For an old man that you assume yourself to be, you are pretty ignorant.

Collin: Hey! Hold it there. For the record, that adage is not outdated. It is infact, timeless.

Bode: Look at him diverting the conversation again! Guy, stop looking for occasion against this girl, stop bullying her! Man up and tell how how you feel. (Frustrated) C'mon now.

Collin: (Sighs, picks up his coffee and takes a sip. He continues...)  If I tell you that I haven't been trying, I'll be a liar. Adanne isn't even helping matters herself. I don't know but lately there's just something about her that really pisses me off.

Bode: There you go again. Admit you've got a superiority complex. You're probably bothered that she is climbing up the promotion scale.

Collin: Look, I need to keep this girl in check, I need to bring her to her place. She's losing sight of what's important, and is falling blindly for that fool who was born with a silver spoon.

Bode: (Chuckles) So your perfect plan is keeping Adanne below you, and not necessarily telling her how you feel?

Collin: I will tell her my feelings eventually, but to do do hat, she needs to be within reach. If she is transferred or promoted, I will never get my chance!

Bode: You know I'm down with anything that will make you open up to her, even if it means resorting to unusual methods.

Collin: Does this imply that you are in sync with my plan of keeping Adanne within reach?

Bode: Totally! As creepy as the task sounds, I've got your back anytime.

Collin: (Hailing him) My nigga! Dinner is on me. Order anything, I'll settle the bills.

(Both laughing, they sip their drinks)

 

 

Scene 4

At the office

Collin is in a meeting with his statistics team. Just then, a female secretary walks in.

Ofonime: Good day Mr. Collin

Collin: Hello Miss. Ofonime, how are you doing?

Ofonime: (Dropping the honorifics) I am doing good Collin.

Collin: (Smiling sheepishly) So to what do I owe this visit of yours.

Ofonime: Drop the cute act, Mr. Gabriel wants to see you in his office.

Collin: Okay. I'll be there in five minutes, let me finish up here.

(Ofonime leaves. Collin continues...) Okay people, that's it for today's briefing. You may all get to work. (They all disperse as Collin leaves for Mr. Gabriel's office. He opens the door to see you in his office.

Collin: Okay. I'll be there in five minutes, let me finish up here.

(Ofonime leaves. Collin continues...) Okay people, that's it for today's briefing. You may all get to work. (They all disperse as Collin leaves for Mr. Gabriel's office. He opens the door to see Mr. Gabriel and Adanne in the office already)

Mr. Gabriel: Welcome Mr. Collin

Collin: Good morning sir.

Adanne: (Acknowledging his presence, she whispers a greeting) Good morning Mr. Collin

Collin: (Avoiding eye contact with her) Morning, Miss. Adanne

Mr. Gabriel: I called the both of you here with regards to the board's decision. Mr. Collin you've been heading the statistics team for a while now, and you've been recognized for doing a good job. Miss. Adanne, you keep impressing the board with your great analytic and strategic skills. It is no wonder you are heading the advertisement team very well.

Collin & Adanne: (In unison) Thank you sir.

Mr. Gabriel: You both deserve the appreciation. Having taken into consideration your many milestones, the board has decided to appoint the both of you as heads in our new branch. You can as well think of it as a promotion. (Adanne is beaming with smiles, but Collin seems indifferent. He tries to hide his worry under a weak smile)

Collin: Sir?

Mr. Gabriel: (Smiling) It has been decided that Miss. Adanne will be made Manager, and you Mr. Collin, supervisor.

Ada: What! Really sir?

Mr. Gabriel: Yes, adanne. A good news it is. (Adanne can't hide her happiness, and Collin can't hide his annoyance. Mr. Gabriel notices Collin's countenance) Alright then, that would be it. Keep up the good work and look forward to what we discussed. You may both leave. 

Adanne & Colin : Thank you sir (They leave his office)

Mr. Gabriel: Come in Miss. Ofonime. (She comes in)

Ofonime: Yes sir.

Me. Gabriel: Keep an eye on Mr. Collin for me.

Ofonime: Okay sir.

Mr. Gabriel: You may leave (She bows and exits his office)
