LITERARY DEVICE: METAPHOR 2
~1.3 mins read
METAPHOR
Poem:
"Stone heart Leaders"
Some leaders;
Their hearts are Stones
That stone and shun
Our progress even at home.
Their speeches are thorns,
Our hearts; balloons
We are pieced with fake blooms
Of promises so we remain in glooms.
Our fates are ant's fates.
We are trampled upon.
Currency is our debt.
Even a cup of garry costs a bank.
(By Triple N).

Definition of Metaphor
It is a forceful yoking together of two things that may or may not be related per se. It calls one the other. Eg"That man IS A LION"
This yoking is void of the use of words like as, like, resembles, etcetera.
Tanyie and Chery (2012) say: "Metaphor is the most suggestive imaginative element of the figurative language."
The effectiveness of a metaphor hereto is to opine a commonality shared by the two things in comparison.
Types include..
Direct, Implied and Extended Metaphor.
From the above poem, a Direct Metaphor is vivid in stanza 1 line 1, when the poet says..."Their Hearts are stones." This is to show how hard and strong; also wicked bad leaders' hearts could be.
Other metaphorical expressions above are: "Even a cup of garry costs a bank; their speeches are thorns, our hearts; balloons."
That's for Metaphor today.....

LITERARY DEVICE: LITOTES
~1.0 mins read
LITOTES.
Definition
Litotes is a literary device that contains an understatement which the affirmative is expressed by negation of the opposite or non affirmative. It is in one way opposite to hyperbole.
Let's put this simply as: when one accepts a thing, idea, or anything by denying or disapproving the opposite.
Examples include.
He is not clean. He is not unworthy of our attention. He is no noise maker.
I am not ungrateful.
Poem by Triple N.
When I told you you were my all,
I was not drunk at all.
So, when you investigate my phone,
It is no good strategy firstly.
Your nagging does no good either.
Keep calm and there won't be any harm.
I assure you, I won't break an arm of the promise.
Note. Litotes has almost the same effect as euphemism. This is because it reduces the harshness in a direct tone by denying an opposite. This helps the receiver to get the answer by his or herself. As a result, the reality will not be as harmful as could be if told directly. For instance. " You are a fool" (direct and pricking) × not Litotes. But, "You are not wise" dribbles you a bit.
