Falana: Lauretta Onochie’s Appointment As INEC Commissioner Illegal - Politics -
~1.9 mins read
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria and the Interim Chairman, Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB), Mr Femi Falana, has faulted the appointment of Mrs Loretta Onochie as an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Commissioner.
Falana said Mrs Loretta Onochie is an unrepentant member of the ruling party and has consistently attacked members of other political parties as against the legal qualification for the appointment of a member of the commission. It would be recalled that Mrs Onochie is currently occupying the position of President Muhammed Buhari’s Special Assistant on Social Media.
The Senior Advocate made this known in a statement issued to Tribune Online , on Tuesday, in Lagos. He said that her appointment contravenes Paragraph 14 of Part 1 of the Third Schedule to the Constitution as amended by Section 30, Act No 1 of 2010.
“In view of the desire of President Muhammadu Buhari to fill some vacancies in the Independent National Electoral Commission, it has become pertinent to draw the attention of the Council of State and the Senate to the following provisions of the Constitution.
“Paragraph 14 of Part 1 of the Third Schedule to the Constitution as amended by Section 30, Act No 1 of 2010, a member of the Independent National Electoral Commission “shall be non-partisan”. From the foregoing, it is crystal clear that a card-carrying member of a registered political party or a well-known supporter of a particular political party is constitutionally disqualified from the membership of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
As an unrepentant member of the ruling party, Mrs Loretta Onochie has consistently attacked members of other political parties. “To that extent, she is partisan and therefore not qualified to be a member of the Independent National Electoral Commission,” he said.
While citing other sections of the constitution regarding the appointment of the INEC Commissioners, Falana said that it is within the purview of the Council of State to advise the President in the exercise of his powers with respect to the appointment of members to the commission. Femi further explained that the constitution also stipulated that the appointment shall be subject to the confirmation of the Senate.
“In appointing the members of the INEC the President is required to consult with the Council of State pursuant to section 154 (3)of the Constitution “Paragraph B of Part 1 of the 3rd Schedule to the Constitution provides that “The Council of State shall have the power to advise the President in the exercise of his powers with respect to (iv) the Independent National Electoral Commission including the appointment of the members of the Commission.
“Pursuant to section 154 (1) of the Constitution, the appointment of the members of the Independent National Electoral Commission shall be subject to confirmation by the Senate,” Femi stated.

Aisha Yesufu: We Rejected Governors, Emefiele’s Moves To Stop EndSARS Protests - Politics
~1.9 mins read
An attempt by state governors and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to stop the #EndSARS protests met a brick wall on Monday as protesters insisted that they would continue.
Activist, Aisha Yesufu, said this in a series of tweets while responding to reports that she and other protesters met with the business community.
While admitting that she had a Zoom meeting with the business leaders, Yesufu said she told them that they should speak with the President instead.
Yesufu said she was lured into the meeting, adding that she would not have attended it in the first place if she knew the agenda.
The activist added, “A brother called me and said would I join a meeting on the #EndSARS issue? I just said yes expecting to enter a meeting with the protesters from different states only for me to see others. Really?
“I feel so angry that they dared to invite me into that foolish discussion in the first place. How can you – business leaders – only always think about yourselves? You want the protests to end? Then do the right thing that real business leaders do in other countries. Openly tell the President that he has failed the young protesters on the street.
“I told them it is the President and the police that are the problems and not the Nigerian young people fed up with selfish leaders. It is not the protesters that are perpetrators; it is the police and government that are perpetrators.”
Yesufu said the strategy adopted by the protesters such as not having a leader maintained the integrity of the movement.
The activist said God forbids that she meets with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to negotiate the #EndSARS protests.
The activist stated, “I said why they are speaking to us. They should go speak to the President. It is the police and government that have bad elements, not the protesters. God forbids I have a meeting with the President. For what?”
Yesufu, who is a Co-Convener of the Bring Back Our Girls group, also denied reports that Red Media Chief Executive, Adebola Williams, agreed to compromise the protests.
She added, “He together with the rest of us insisted the protest must go on. Even when Emefiele said he would arrange for us to meet with the President, Adebola Williams told him the President has lost credibility with young people.”
Youths in several parts of the country have been protesting against police brutality since last Thursday.
They called for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force which had been accused of extrajudicial killings.
Despite the scrapping of the unit, however, the protests have continued.

#endsars Protest Hits Akure -

I don't stand with #EndSars..I stand with #ReformSars particularly and #ReformtheNigerianPoliceForce..

As e dey go now, the #EndSars protests have been hijacked by Yahoo boys, prostitutes protecting I Yahoo Boy Customers, and even armed Robbers, kidnappers and murderers

I detest SARS Officers for their high-handedness and abuse of power, but these SARS guys are a part of the Police force particularly dreaded by hardened criminals....this is because these criminals know these SARS guys are also hardened crooks themselves and are licensed to act swiftly and ruthlessly to curb crime

You don't cut off your head just because your nose is ailing
SARS as presently constitited have abandoned their primary assignment of apprehending armed robbers..after all SARS means "Special Anti-Robbery Squad...they have now taken or upon themselves to do EFCC's Job of apprehending Yahoo boys abi na suspected Yahoo boys, and have extended that to harassing citezens who make the mistake of appearing fresh, young and have the guts to have laptops and phones on them

That nonsense must stop...but that does not mean SARS should be scrapped..They are an absolutely necesary evil

In the whole mad hysteria which is the #endsars protest, Nigerians forget that there are more deadly police departments like the SACS (Special anti cultism Squad)
IGP X-Squad
Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad .

All these Squads are very joyless and are fully licensed to be as brutal, if not more brutal than the SARS Everyone is shouting about..
If the Police want to be mischievous, they will disband SARS and move all its officers to these other deadly squads for them to continue 'the Lord's Work"

Shebi i have read of a case where Soldiers connived and kidnapped a young boy in Imo State, under the guise that he was being arrested on arrested on suspicion of being a Yahoo Boy..
After kidnapping the young boy and forcing him to pay more than 1million naira to them, they killed the boy, dumped his body in the bush, and made away with his Lexus Es350 car..This happened late last year abi na this year sef..
Because of that, why haven't we called for #EndNigerianArmy?

I still remember how some officers of the same Nigerian Army killed many policemen while aiding the escape of a fugitive kidnapper in Taraba State..

We didn't call for #EndNigerianArmy because of that..

Point is..the fact of the existence of some Renegades in an organisation does not make that organization totally useless or worth discarding..

If the #EndSars protesters are truly serious, let us also end Nigerian Army because of their atrocities as well

When Bail Is Actually Free, I Will Believe The Police Has Been Reformed - Crime - Nairaland
~0.9 mins read
I have been to several police stations, to solve many cases for people , and I have been a victims too of robbery and breach of contracts..In all, I paid money...In my eyes I saw how police are making millions in their stations on people who have cases..
And at the end, after arm twisting people to pay , at the counter people will still pay for Bail,
Anyone who enter cell will pay for Soap, pay for water , which were not provided
In police station ,you will see BAIL IS FREE, but its never free
Even if you have a lawyer, its your lawyer who will negotiate the bail for you
All the money police make illegally get to the top, and it is hard their hierarchy change this narrative
But I believe, a day Bail is free, Police is actually reformed

Bail is free but unfortunately, unscrupulous officers still extort suspects and make them pay for 'bail' before they are released.

Nigeria is a messed up country where everybody looks for way taking the advantage of the other.

In this country, we are who we are.
