NIGERIAN ARMY CRIES OUT OVER POLICE BRUTALITY
~0.8 mins read
The Nigerian Army has bemoaned the k*lling of its personnel in joint operations with the Nigerian Police, directing all its formations and units to commence the collation of data victims of police br*tality within its ranks in the last two years.
This was contained in a letter signed by Major General James Ataguba, the Chief of Standards and Evaluation and sent to all units on November 23, People Gazette reports.
“Consequently, all NA corps, formations, and establishments are requested to forward all recorded incidence of police br*tality against personnel of the NA. The report should cover the last two years,” the army said in the document titled “Evaluating Incidences of Police Brutality Against Personnel of Nigerian Army”.

The institution, which said the br*tality has led to bodily h*rm and the de*th of personnel, urged all units to submit the necessary data on or before December 8, 2021. According to the army, violence often breaks during joint operations as police tend to equate its hierarchy with the Nigerian Army.

The army, however, said it was conducting an evaluation of incidents with a view to finding measures to prevent future occurrences.

China Threatens Countermeasures If US Boycotts Olympics
~1.3 mins read
China has disclosed that it will take ‘countermeasures’ if the United States opts for a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics, hours after unconfirmed reports hinted that the Biden administration could announce such a move this week.

Africa Today News, New York reports that CNN and NBC cited unnamed sources Sunday as saying the diplomatic boycott — meaning no US government officials would attend the Games, but athletes would still compete — could be revealed this week, after President Joe Biden said in November it was something he was ‘considering.’

Biden is under pressure at home to speak out on China’s human rights abuses, especially in Xinjiang where the US government says repression of the Uyghur ethnic group qualifies as genocide.

In response to reports, Beijing said such a move would be ‘pure grandstanding’.

‘I want to stress that the Winter Olympic Games is not a stage for political posturing and manipulation,’ foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a regular press briefing on Monday, warning the US should stop ‘hyping’ the boycott.

‘If the US is bent on having its own way, China will take resolute countermeasures,’ Zhao said.

Campaigners say that at least one million Uyghurs and other Turkic-speaking, mostly Muslim minorities have been incarcerated in camps in Xinjiang, where China is also accused of forcibly sterilising women and imposing forced labour.

Coming just six months after the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Summer Games, the Winter Olympics will be held from February 4 to 20 in a ‘closed loop’ bubble because of Covid-19 restrictions.
