Iconic figures such as Messi and Ronaldo cannot claim to have scaled such heights, despite taking in the most memorable of careers as individual superstars. Messi and Ronaldo have dominated at the highest level of football for over a decade, winning 11 Ballon d'Ors between them and breaking records left, right and centre. Their rivalry is also a healthy one, with both players prompting the other to raise their game. Messi has spoke about missing Ronaldo in La Liga, while the Portuguese superstar has talked glowingly about the Barcelona legend.
Former Ex-Brazil forward, Edilson, who tasted global glory with his country in 2002 has suggested that his exploits, and ability, have him stood above icons of the modern era. He also managed only six efforts through his 21 outings for Brazil, with fierce competition for places meaning that the spotlight often focused on others.
Two starts were made at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea – against Costa Rica and Turkey – while he stepped off the bench in meetings with England and China. He saw no minutes in a 2-0 final victory over Germany, but does he have the medal to show that he landed the most prestigious of trophies. Edilson managed 163 goals during his club career, most of which was spent in Brazil, while he also scored six times for his country.
Former Ex-Brazil forward, Edilson, a journeyman you've probably never heard of, claimed to be “better than Neymar†while also standing above Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo when it comes to career achievements just because he won World Cup glory for Brazil in 2002.
The 50-year old, who turned out for the likes of Palmeiras, Corinthians and Flamengo, scored six goals in 21 appearances for his country and was part of the 2002 World Cup winning side in Japan and South Korea.
Despite never playing in a leading European league, Edilson genuinely reckons he's on a different level to the two titans of world football because of that World Cup winners medal.
"At my best, I played better than Neymar. He needs to win the World Cup in order to be better than me," said Edilson.
