Classifications of drugs:

Drugs are classified under their actions and effects on human body, as:

1. Narcotics: These are classifications of drugs that are strong analgesics and used to relief pain. It has a sedative effect on Central Nervous System. They are mostly abused. Examples are Opiates, morphine, cocaine.

2. Stimulants: There are drugs that helps in increasing the work of CNS. They elevate moods, give a temporary increased ability to perform. E.g Amphetamine, Kolanut, caffeine.

3. Depressants: These are drugs that slow or reduces the activities of CNS. Examples are alcohol, barbiturates, chlorahydrates, metacohalone.

4. Hallucinogens: These are drugs which cause hallucinogenic effects on the human body. They dislocates consciousness and are known to alter moods like perception, thinking and reasoning. E.g Amphetamine, psylocypin.

5. Cannabis/Marijuana: Are drugs gotten from dried leaves and flowers of hemp plants. It gives a feeling of being relaxed when its smoked. E.g Marijuana, Hashish, hashish oil.

6. Gateway Drugs:These are drugs that people tend to try first when they start using drugs. Substances that are gateway drugs are:

i. Nicotine. 

ii. Alcohol. 

iii. Marijuana.
