ASUU Gives Update On 7 Months Old Strike

Nigeria's prominent lecturers' group, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), said it has not suspended its strike.
Nigerian Tribune reported the Lagos zonal coordinator of ASUU, Profesor Olusiji Sowande, made this known on Saturday, October 17.
Legit.ng gathers that Sowande said media reports claiming that the strike has been suspended are not true.

He also said that the claim that the federal government had released N30 billion for Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) is not also true.

Also corroborating the position of Professor Sowande, the chairman of ASUU at the University of Lagos, Dr Dele Ashiru, said it was only the National Executive Council of the union that can call-off the strike.
He added that the decision of the NEC must also be subjected to the congress, noting the president of the union cannot unilaterally suspend the strike.
According to the Nigerian Tribune, the strike by the lecturer's union is now seven month's old.

Professor Ishaq Oloyede, Advocated That Mathematics Should Not Be Compulsory For Those Who Want To Study Humanities.

In what will excite many parents and students, especially those who want to read humanities in the Colleges of Education, Ishaq Oloyede has advocated that mathematics as a subject is unnecessary.
Professor Oloyede who is the registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, disclosed this on Tuesday, February 23, in Abuja.
Also, he warned Provosts of Colleges of Education against the conduct of illegal admissions, Nigerian Tribune reports.

Recall that president of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COASU), Comrade Nuhu Ogirima, had earlier insisted that somebody who wants to undergo any course in Humanities does not require mathematics for anything since such an individual would have acquired the basics at the basic and secondary levels of education.
