These 10 Animals Can Survive For Many Months Without Food. How Many Do You Know?
~2.6 mins read
When it comes to food and feeding, the animal kingdom is totally different from humans. While humans can eat regularly because they can and have what to eat, it is not so easy for some animals. Hence, these animals evolved or developed impressive features to survive long periods without food. This selection includes 10 animals that can survive for many months without food. Continue below to find out how many of them you know.
1. Great Whale Shark (3 months)
Great whale sharks are ruthless predators. They eat around 11 tons of food a year, but a single meal could be large enough to tide them over three months at a time. The longer they live without food, the more perfect their hunting skills become.
2. Emperor Penguin (3 months)
The male emperor penguin stays with the couple's sole egg for the winter. Meanwhile, the female goes to hunt. During this period of incubation, the male shelters the egg with his feet. He does not eat or drink. He loses up to half of his body weight doing this.
3. Humpback Whale (6 months)
Humpbacks eat tons of food during the summer months. This enables them to create sufficient blubber reserves. Then they migrate to warmer waters, where there is no food for them. They stay their for half a year, eating nothing and relying on their vast deposits of fa
4. Scorpion (1 year)
Scorpions have the ability to consume large quantities of food compared to their body size. They can eat up to one-third their body weight in a single meal. Thanks to this, as well as an ability to slow their metabolism, scorpions can survive up to 12 months without feeding.
5. Galapagos Tortoise (1 year)
This is the largest living species of tortoise that can weigh around 400 kg. However, this giant reptile has a very slow metabolism. It also has evolved large internal storage areas for water. The galapagos tortoise can go a year without food or water.
6. Snakes (1 year)
When snakes get cold, their body temperature drops. If its cold enough, they go into a state of dormancy. This is not hibernation, since the snakes are not actually asleep. But their metabolic rate in this state is so low that they can live for 12 months without feeding due to stored energy in their bodies.
7. Crocodile (3 years)
Crocodiles regularly go for long periods without food. Just like snakes, they do not need food to maintain body temperature. Crocodiles are very efficient at storing energy in their bodies and can eat a lot when they feed. They can survive by staying motionless and using their fat deposits.
8. West African Lungfish (5 years)
African lungfishes generally live in the shallow waters of swaps and marshes. When the water dries up, these fishes transforms into land-dwellers that breathe air. During the dry season, lungfish burrow deep into dried mud, then excrete a coating of slime to minimise water loss. They can "sleep" in this state for 3 to 5 years.
9. Olm (10 years)
Olms are amphibians that live in water in underground caves. They are blind, colourless creatures that prey on small crabs and snails. Olms are extremely good at storing food in their bodies as ipids and glycogen. When there is not much food around, they lower their metabolic rate and become inactive. They can live up to 10 years from their nutrient reserves.
10. Tardigrade (30 years)
The tiny tardigrade is the toughest creature on the planet. It can handle extreme pressures and temperatures, and even survive in a vacuum. Tardigrades can suspend their own metabolism to .01% of its normal rate. They can also get by on just 1% of their optimal hydration level. This makes them capable of surviving more than 30 years without food or water.
