Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was left furious on Sunday night in Lisbon after his team failed to clinch top spot in their bid to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Portuguese side who started the game atop of their group, lost the deciding fixture against Serbia by two goals to one.
Portugal landed the first blow on Sunday night as Renato Sanches put his in front in the early minutes of the tie, the goal was ultimately cancelled out by Serbia's Didan Tadic at the closing minutes of the 1st half and at the death of the 90 minutes Fulham's Aleksandr Mitrovic landed the last blow as the Serbs whistled past their Portuguese opponents to take the top spot in the qualification for the world cup next year.
Ronaldo could be faced with a cumbersome situation as the 36-year-old will be looking at the playoffs to secure a chance to play in his final world cup tournament as he looks to guide his team through the playoffs.
However, if the Portuguese can’t find a way through we may not be seeing Ronaldo again in another world cup as he will be 40 years old by the time of the 2026 campaign.
Long-time rival Lionel Messi has already seen his side through to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
