Lionel Messi’s transfer saga in Spain has gone haywire as the La Liga announce that the €700million buyout clause in the player’s contract is still valid.
The Barcelona star who has one year left in his existing contract handed-in his transfer request hoping to activate a clause which allows him to leave the Catalans at the end of any season, for free.
But the club stated that the clause had expired on June 10 and that the €700million release clause is in place.

They are also arguing that the June 10 date, nominally the end of the season, is now irrelevant after the coronavirus delays which led to the season’s extension and the team playing deep into August.
He quoted a clause in the contract: â€œThis compensation will not apply when the resolution of the contract, by the unilateral decision of the player, takes effect from the end of the 2019-20 sporting season."
And added: "It's obvious that the compensation of €700m... does not apply at all."
However, the La Liga has reiterated its earlier stand that the clause is still active and that Messi’s transfer would not be processed if that amount is not paid.
