Klopp Is About To Unleash Unseen Liverpool Midfield Trio, And It Could Be Something Special
Two months into the 2020/21 season, Jürgen Klopp has used no fewer than eight different midfield combinations in all competitions.Granted, that does include the League Cup ties against Lincoln City and Arsenal in which Marko Grujić and Curtis Jones started as a double-pivot in a heavily rotated Liverpool side on both occasions, but still, Klopp has fielded seven different midfield configurations in the Premier League and Champions League already.Perhaps that shouldn't come as any great surprise given that midfield is by far the most fully stocked department in Liverpool's squad, so naturally it's where Klopp has most scope for rotation amid such a densely packed fixture schedule.Except, in reality, Klopp hasn't actually had a huge wealth of options at all, with Thiago Alcântara, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and James Milner all struck down at various points by injury (and illness) issues of varying severity, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hasn't been available since injuring his knee in pre-season. As such, Gini Wijnaldum and Curtis Jones are the only senior midfielders in the squad who've had a clean bill of health so far.Selecting who starts in midfield has therefore been more a case of availability as opposed to who Klopp would ideally have chosen had his resources not been depleted – a predicament which has been complicated further by the injury crisis at centre-back, meaning Fabinho essentially had to be re-classified as a defender to fill the gaping Virgil van Dijk void (until he strained his hamstring against Midtjylland). With Fabinho expected to return to action soon (hopefully immediately) after this international break, the fact Joe Gomez is now also out with a long-term injury means he'll almost certainly be needed to fill in exclusively at centre-back alongside Joel Matip through until January at the very least.

The veteran defender has admitted that he has been suffering a "terrible headache" in his last two Chelsea games.“After my last two games, I’ve had a terrible headache because there are non-stop aerial duels and a very high pace of play,†the 36-year-old told reporters in his press conference for the Brazil national team (via the Independent).“We have to constantly reinvent ourselves. You lose players because of Covid-19 infections or there are others who get injured because we’re playing a lot of games.
