What Mikel Arteta Says To Walcott
~1.9 mins read
When Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang started the season with almost identical curling strikes against Liverpool and Fulham, there is no way we thought we'd have to wait until mid-December to see him get his first Emirates goal of the campaign.

The 31-year-old has scored just twice from open play since signing his contract extension in September, although unlike with Mesut Ozil it seems as though correlation does not necessarily mean causation.

Aubameyang is normally one of the happiest, most laid back players you're likely to see in the Premier League, but as his goal drought began to lengthen you could physically see the pressure weighing down on his shoulders.

He admitted that the lack of goals was affecting his confidence in his programme notes ahead of the defeat to Burnley on Sunday.

With a tally of three goals this season he is actually overperforming his expected goals which stands at just 2.64. This speaks to a chronic lack of creativity within the Arsenal side that is starving their most valuable weapon.

It has not just been a problem this season though. Last year Aubameyang was in the form of his life and outscored his xG by 5.65 goals. Arsenal are heavily reliant on their number 14, and if he isn't finishing every chance he gets, then they have real problems.

Speaking after the Southampton game Mikel Arteta said he hoped that breaking his Emirates duck would kickstart the 31-year-old's season.

For the third time in five matches Arsenal were reduced to ten men against Southampton.

Gabriel was the guilty party this time on what was a torrid night for the Brazilian. Having been at fault for the first goal he seemed desperate to overcompensate by getting tight to Theo Walcott and defending with agression.

But having just been booked for kicking the ball away moments later, to pull the Englishman back so blatantly was ridiculous.

The red card was all the more frustrating because - like with Nicolas Pepe's red card against Leeds and Granit Xhaka's one against Burnley - Arsenal had managed to get themselves into a position where they could have gone on to win the match.

After a poor first half display Mikel Arteta sent his side out three minutes early onto a cold Emirates pitch and it looked to be having the desired effect. Aubameyang had got the equaliser and the momentum was with the Gunners, only for it to be snatched away by a moment of individual stupidity.
