Liverpool Signing Former Manchester United Leader Can Bridge Their 100m Gap

Liverpool signing of former Manchester United leader can bridge their £100m gap

LiverpoolechoSep 11, 2020Read original
Liverpool are edging closer to overtaking Manchester United in the financial stakes - and indeed would probably already have overtaken them were it not for the coronavirus pandemic.
In the latest accounts released for both clubs,
Liverpool trailed United by £85 million
in terms of revenue, with the Reds having since won both the
 Premier League
and the
 Champions League
.
And now
 Jurgen Klopp’s
men have made a recruit that could prove significant in turning the tables, putting them back onto the trajectory of getting back to the top off the pitch as well as on it.
Just over a month ago, it was announced that
Liverpool had signed up highly-rated Matt Scammell
as the club's new commercial director.
Having left his position as United's Head of Global sponsorship sales earlier this year, Scammell spent nine years at Old Trafford, where he built up a wealth of experience across sales and business development, holding senior roles in technology, digital, communications and sporting sectors.
Billy Hogan, who had operated in his role previously at Liverpool, was moved into the chief executive post left vacant by the now-departed
 Peter Moore
.
Relatively little is know about Scammell, apart from his Old Trafford past, but his brief at Anfield is to focus on growing partnership opportunities for the Reds, as well as being part of the club’s executive team under FSG.
Speaking to the
Blood Red podcast for a football finance and transfer podcast
, the University of Liverpool’s Kieran Maguire said: "
 Manchester United
have commercial income of around about £275 million per year.
"Liverpool’s has trebled from £62 million at the start of the decade to £188 million at the end so this is clearly an area where Liverpool have realised there is an opportunity.
"One of the ways to do that is to win trophies because that is what sponsors are willing to pay for, and what people hosting exhibition matches are willing to pay for.
"Let’s park COVID - Liverpool are therefore in a very strong position this summer given all the trophies that they have won to have had a successful pre-season tour.

"Companies want their brand next to the Premier League trophy - there are reputational benefits for all concerned - and people are prepared to pay a price for that.
"Liverpool’s strategy of recruiting
 Matt Scammell
is a logical one because they want to narrow that gap still further - it’s £175 million compared to £275 million so there is still some way to go.
"Manchester United and Liverpool are both global clubs and have worldwide fan bases and sponsors. If Liverpool follow the Manchester United model, that has proven to be very lucrative."
Hogan has overseen plenty of lucrative deals himself, but the addition of Scannell, with his expertise from one of the world-leaders when it comes to that field, is something that Maguire and Liverpool are excited about.
The Reds’ sleeve sponsor, Western Union, appear to have cut short their deal with the club given that the
 ECHO reported in 2017
when that partnership was announced, that it was a five-year deal worth £5 million per season.
But there are plenty of other new avenues that have been opened up in recent years, with the most recent new sponsor (or ‘official chocolate’) being Cadbury’s,
 their latest global partnership
.
By increasing revenues, and decreasing the amount left on loans that the club have to fund things like the Main Stand expansion,
FSG have made Liverpool sustainable financially
.
Long-term, that will mean more money can be pumped into the playing squad
in the form of both transfers and wages
. By winning both on and off the pitch, Liverpool are now positioned in the best place to kick on again in the future.
It might not mean huge investment in the transfer market this summer, but in the future, the club will be able to continually compete at the top end of the global game as they now have done for successive seasons.

A young boy said to be a JSS 3 student sustained life-threatening injuries after he was allegedly knocked down by some disbanded members of Rivers Taskforce while trying to wrest control of the steering wheel following an argument with a cab driver in Rivers State.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday afternoon, September 9, at Ozuoba in Obi/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The boy was rushed to the nearest hospital while an angry mob succeeded in arresting one of the fake task force members and handed him over to Ozuoba Police Station.

Narrating how the incident happened, the victim's teacher, Goldy Ude, said that the boy was returning from a WAEC French exam when the vehicle knocked him down. He lost most of his teeth while his face was mutilated.

Ude wrote;

"The above pictures show details of a very disheartening story of task force boys who though disbanded by the government still do their illegal job,"

"This afternoon one of my students, a JSS 3 boy who was returning from a French exam was knocked down by a Siena bus whose steering was seized by the hooligans.

The vehicle totally left the main road and lifted the poor boy from the pedestrian walkway. one of them was caught and handed over to the police in Ozuoba,"

"The boy was rushed unconscious to the hospital. He lost most of his upper teeth. His jaw and part of his face were mutilated I couldn’t hold my tears to see a boy that left me less than an hour earlier in this state.

His situation was bad I thank God for his life. He made it out of the theatre but will need a set of artificial upper teeth,"

" He is lying down in excruciating pain in the hospital now. He did nothing wrong. He was on the walkway. He absolutely didn’t deserve this yet these untamed task force boys disfigured him in his prime,"

"Our Governor needs to hear this, and do something about these boys.please keep posting until the people in authority rise to do the right thing. He is my son ooo, oh God my heart is broken I haven't slept since yesterday, River state government please come to our aid."

In another report, a 7- year-old girl identified as Juwairiya Auwal was slaughtered by a suspected female ritualist inside a hut in Jos Museum, Plateau State.

It was gathered that on Saturday, September 5, Juwairiya Auwal and her elder sister Fatima Auwal, went out as usual to hawk brooms around Tudun OC in Rikkos community, Jos north local government area of the state, when they were accosted by an unknown Fulani woman.

Narrating how her younger sister was killed, Fatima said they were hawking when they met the Fulani woman who initially pretended to be a prospective customer.

The woman asked them to give her a broom free of charge but they refused. Suddenly, she touched their heads and they found themselves in a hut in the popular Jos Museum.

According to Fatima, when she opened her eyes she found the elderly woman slaughtering Jumairiya. She managed to escape to look for help.
