A hospital consultant from the West Midlands who fell ill with Covid-19 while pregnant with twins has said it’s a "miracle" both children were born safe and well.

Perpetual Uke was six months pregnant when she fell seriously ill with Covid and was forced into a coma at Birmingham City Hospital.

She woke up 16 days later to find her baby bump gone and felt "terrified" as she thought the twins had died.

In reality, doctors had performed a caesarean on Perpetual and both Sochika Palmer and Osinachi Pascal were born at just 26 weeks.

Palmer weighed just 770g while her brother, Pascal, weighed 850g.

Both twins spent their first few months being looked after by intensive care nurses and were finally discharged after 116 days in hospital.

The mum-of-four said waking up two weeks after the delivery "was unbelievable" and although hospital staff said the twins were hers, she "didn't believe" it.

She said: "When they showed me the pictures, they were so tiny, they didn't look like human beings, I couldn't believe they were mine.

"I had never wanted them to go through this difficult path at the start of their lives.

"They couldn't see their mum for two weeks, which obviously made me very sad but, importantly, things had progressed well."

Matthew Uke, Dr Uke’s husband, said seeing his children for the first time gave him "mixed feelings" because he wasn’t sure if his wife was "going to come back".

He said: "Seeing them there, it was mixed feelings because by then my wife was still in a coma and I wasn't sure she was going to come back, so it was a mixture of feelings.

"It was really terrifying… every passing day I was hoping my wife was not among those who are dead.

Uk Parliament: Gowon moved half of CBN fund to UK.

A member of the United Kingdom parliament on Monday, November 23 claimed that former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon allegedly stole half of the funds in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The parliamentarian made the allegation during the House deliberation on the aftermath of the EndSARS protest, and possible sanctions to be meted on top Nigerians regarding the roles they played in the killing of unarmed protesters.

He said, “What we are seeing in Nigeria today is part of that story. It is a tragedy we are all witnessing because we see things falling apart.

“The problem this time is not foreign pressure known as colonialism. The pressure instead is corruption and violence and attempts at control (of power).

“We need to call out the corruption, we need to use the powers that we have in this country to stop those who are profiting from the wealth of that great nation and hiding it here.

“Now some people will remember when general Gowon left Nigeria, he took half of the Central Bank, so it is said, and moved to London.

“We know today, even now in this great city of ours, there are sadly some people who have taken the wealth of Nigerian people and hidden their ill-gotten gains here.

“We know that our banks sadly have been used for that profit or that illegal transfer of asset and that means that the UK is in a unique position in being able to actually do something to really exert pressure on those who have robbed Nigerians.”
