Police, DSS Take Over National Assembly Over Planned Protest By Legislative Aides
~1.3 mins read
The management of the National Assembly on Monday morning beefed up security in and around the premises apparently to thwart a planned protest by some legislative aides.
The aides, under the auspices of Salary Arrears Affected Legislative Aides (SAALA), had vowed to ground activities at the National Assembly beginning from today over alleged non-payment of their 2019 salary arrears and allowances in the sum of N3.1 billion.
The Chairman of the National Assembly Legislative Aides Forum (NASSLAF), Salisu Zuru, had disowned the group in a statement, describing their planned action as illegal.
But the aides, under the auspices of Salary Arrears Affected Legislative Aides (SAALA), in statement signed by their Coordinator, Mr. Zebis Prince, and five other members, noted that the protest had become necessary to press home their demands.
Security personnel including anti-riot and regular policemen, Department of State Services (DSS) personnel and Sergeant-at-Arms have been deployed to the complex manning various entrances and exits.
Recall that aides of Nigerian national lawmakers agreed to ground activities of the National Assembly starting from Monday, September 27, following the alleged non-payment of their salary and allowances to the tune of N3.1 billion, The legislative workers are claiming that the huge debt stems from N1.35 billion in salary arrears and N1.75 billion for consequential adjustment on minimum wage.
The aides added that while 1,300 aides were still being owed salary arrears, not even one of the 2,345 employees in NASS has received the consequential adjustment on minimum wage after their employment in June 2019.
NOTE: federal government needs to involved in this situation before it got escalated. Provision of solution also should be made as soon as possible to avoid causality.
