7 Nigerian Governors To Watch Out For In 2021 — Babajide.
Veteran and multi-award winning journalist, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju has projected seven Nigerian governors to be watched out for in 2021.
Speaking on Wednesday episode of Journalists Hangout, the revered journalist stated that, in his opinion, the following seven governors are to be watched out for in 2021.
•Governor David Umahi, Ebonyi State.
•Governor Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti State.
•Gov Bello Muhammed Matawalle, Zamfara State.
•Babajide Sanwo-olu, Lagos State.
•Governor Nyesom Wike, Rivers State.
•Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Kaduna State.
•Governor Umara Zulum Borno State.
Explaining what each of them might be in the news for, he said seven of them would be in the news come what may and that he is not saying that they are the best governors in the country. He then began to itemize them.
•David Umahi.
He said Governor Umahi was in the news because he is doing great things and because of his defection to All Progressives Congress. He added his showed he is interested in a bigger office in the party he has moved to, saying some promises must have been made to him before he defected. He said as the year progresses somethings will begin to unfold as to where the governor is heading to and how he is going to hold base together since some of his aides refused to move with him to the APC.
•Kayode Fayemi.
The ace journalist said as per Governor Fayemi, he would share a similarity with Governor Umahi as he too is setting his eyes on higher elective office. He added that as Fayemi is rounding off his tenure as the governor of Ekiti, his move will clearly show where he intends to head to whether he is eyeing presidency or vice presidency.
•Bello Muhammad Matawalle.
He said Governor Matawalle would be in the spotlight concerning what he is doing on security issues in his state. He added there is a feeling in the state that he has been able to improve on the security of the state. He said since the security is the major challenge our country is currently facing, anybody that appears to be doing well along that line will always be in the news.
•Babajide Sanwo-olu.
As for the Lagos Governor, the respected journalist opined that 2021 and the year after it will define his legacy. He revealed when the governor took over, lots of roads were bad in the state. He added he has done well in that regards as well as combating COVID-19 to the extent that he and his aides got infected with the virus. He said as the year moves on, people will see what he is trying to do concerning the giving alternative routes to Dangote refinery because people do not want that route to turn into another Apapa gridlock. And he has said he is going to create two roads, and a bridge in the Dangote refinery route, and the Mainland Bridge as people don't want to see a repeat of Apapa traffic.
•Nyesom Wike.
He said that Wike is believed among the governor to be the one who has the most resources, and the capacity to use those resources. He said a lot of governors didn't have access to oil wells let alone deploying it for use. He added the Rivers governor has shown himself to be the most powerful politician within PDP at this time and even the most influential because of the resources at his disposal. The ace journalist further Wike is already showing interest in whom become the National Chairman of the party as he was instrumental to the election of the current National Chairman of PDP.
•Nasir El-Rufai.
He revealed that Governor El-Rufai has never failed to make headlines either for positive, or negative reasons; he is always in the news. He cited reasons for this. He said it is partly because he is governing a state where ethno-religious crisis is common and partly because violence is rampant in the state, adding that the governor would definitely be one of the biggest newsmakers in 2021.
•Umara Zulum.
Being the most popular public officer in Northern Nigeria today, and a lover of his people, Babajide said he had no doubt that he would also make headline in 2021, especially in the area of securing lives and properties of his people.
Babajide then went on to quote a statement once made by the governor. It reads:
“It is better to take a risk and die serving the poor than to leave the poor suffering and dying a coward. The only thing I am afraid of is to stand before Almighty Allah while I deliberately failed Borno people. I was born into a poor family. I have a commercial driver just to pay my school fee. I hustled, and I became a professor. Therefore, I belong to everybody. I am 100% sure that if I am dying today, no one will stop it. I swear with the only Qur'an that I am going to protect the interest of my people and I will continue to do that regardless.â€
