5 Habits That Will Change You Into A Better Person
~4.3 mins read
Human personality is composed by the influence of nature and nurture. Nature would mean everything hereditary, what we get from our parents. This explains what is meant by the phrase the apple does not fall far from the tree.
Conversely, the experiences we go through in life always play a role in shaping our personality. A difficult childhood, such as where the parent is overly strict and controlling for example, may cause one to grow up into an indecisive adult.
Simply speaking then, 50 percent of who we are is because of who our parents were, and the remaining 50 percent comes from what our environment gives us. This is certainly good news then, because if we notice something about ourselves that is not very desirable, we have the ability to change it.
Scientists say it takes a minimum of 21 days to get over a habit, and an average of 66 days to finally replace it with another. Chances are, we all have one thing we can change about ourselves and give the people who interact with us a more pleasant experience. The five suggestions given here will help us acquire a few more virtues.
Be grateful
Everyone wants to be appreciated. This is an intrinsic human need. When we are thanked we feel esteemed. Gratefulness is an attribute associated with happy people. You cannot be angry and thankful at the same time. Thank the person who serves you at the supermarket, or the bus crew, the waiter or the security guard, even though they are paid to provide that service.
A friend one time mentioned how, at her workplace, a client said he was grateful that she was the one serving customers that day. While this was a random customer who had never visited my friend’s workplace before, that statement struck with her.
Every day, my friend would say to herself she has the honour of serving clients, and she would ensure every customer who came to her station got stellar service. With time, the bosses realized customers would ask to personally be served by her, and this led to her promotion.
Audit friends
If we hang around people who are angry or sullen, we become just like them. When our environment is made of cheerful, positive people, they tend to rub if on us too.
Look at who surrounds you. If they are not working on being better, now might be a good time to separate yourself from them, unless you can influence them to join this journey, thereby becoming better with you.
Pray often
Prayer is a characteristic of thankful, humble people. During prayer, we give thanks for what God has enabled us to have, which automatically makes us more grateful.
On the other hand, when we pray, we are seeking help from the Supreme Being, which means we take on a position of humility. Without humility, we cannot approach anyone for help. The more we pray, the more we give thanks, and the more humble we become.
Help others
Lend a helping hand to someone in need of assistance. Help could be anything – carry groceries for the old lady instead of letting her scurry around with it; offer to do laundry for the family; assist a child with their homework.
Spiritual laws dictate that what you give comes back to you, so someday, on a day when you really need it, there will be someone to come to your aid too. Besides, if you are a believer, the Good Book says giving to the poor is lending to God. And since God does not allow Himself to be in anyone’s debt, you can be sure He will repay you for all your good deeds.
Live purposefully
We were not made to waste time doing nothing. In fact, we are not wired to just go through the motions in life. If we are merely getting up, trudging through the day, eating and going to sleep, then we are really not participating in living; that’s being the walking dead.
Every human being has a purpose inside of them, a role they were made to play in this world. Living purposefully will always leave us more fulfilled and happy. If we are happy, we are pleasant and attract people to us, we attract opportunities, we attract favour, we attract help. What were you made for? Find it out and begin to live by purpose.
