How To Know Your Hair Porosity
~1.9 mins read
Going through the natural hair journey can be a tough and challenging one. People even perm their hair just to skip the responsibility of taking care of the hair. Over the years, many African women have started learning to love and embrace their hair the way it is. Did you know that learning to love your hair can make you see the beauty in it? I remember when I first started my hair journey, it was rough and challenging and during the first months, my hair was short and it made me feel bad but the moment I learnt to love my hair, I saw how beautiful it could be. I learnt the many ways I could style it and here I am, loving my hair for what it is and not minding what anyone says about it.
Knowing your hair type and hair porosity is very essential in the natural hair journey. There are different types of hair and hair porosity, and in this article, we would consider them. Below are the types of hair porosity in the natural hair journey:
1: High porosity
2: Medium porosity
3: Low porosity
Now we are going to look at how you will know the category you fall in. To know the category you fall in, take a bowl full of water and add a strand or two of your hair in the bowl. After five minutes, if your hair floats on the surface then it is low porosity. If it stops halfway through the bowl, them it is medium porosity. And if it goes straight to the bottom of the bowl, then it is high porosity.
Now that you've known your hair porosity, your question should be 'Of what importance is my hair porosity and what does it mean?'. Here are the characteristics of each hair porosity.
1: High porosity: A high porosity hair absorbs water and other products fast. Someone with high porosity can use remedies like rice water or any other products more frequently than someone with other hair porosity.
2: Medium porosity: If your hair is medium porosity, it is easy to style and does not take long to dry.
3: Low porosity: due to the tightly held cuticles, low porosity hair does not absorbs moisture easily. If you have low porosity hair, wash your once every two weeks to avoid product buildup on the hair.
Now that you've known you your hair porosity, let's look at how you can identify your hair type. There are four hair types in the human race which are further divided in subcategories. Below are the types of hair:
Type 1: Straight hair
Type 2: Wavy hair
Type 3: Curly hair
Type 4: Coily hair
