Drugs are substances which can benefit the body by bringing health to a diseased situation or can harm the body when taken overdose or when it is unnecessarily used. Drugs can be taken orally, injected or absorbed through membranes, example nose, rectum, vegina etc.

A situation where by one takes drugs only for non-medical purposes and in such a manner that can damage an individuals health and ability to work is known as DRUGS ABUSE.

EFFECT OF DRUG ABUSE

1. Overused or indiscriminate use of drugs can result in several psychological and physiological problems.
2. It can cause separation or divorce in marriage thereby leaving children without parental care
3. Drug abusers consistently have low working capacity.

Others include
Stomach upset and damage to other digestive system.

Mouth and throat cancer can be caused by tobacco

Ulcer

Damage to liver which leads to cirrhosis of the liver

Damage to nostrils and lungs.

Skin rashes

Infection abscesses.

PREVENTION OF DRUG ABUSE
There is large number of drugs users in Nigeria nearly 90% of the addict in drug treatment program are being helped with cannabis addiction. The other drugs sending people to drug rehabilitation center are pharmaceutical depressants inhalant, opiates, cocaine etc. Drugs abuse can be prevented through

6 During the campaign for public enlightenment on harmful effect of drugs.
