NEWSUS Air Force Unveils Hexa, A Flying Car That Could Shuttle Troops Across War Zones By 2023
~29.7 mins read
The US military has previously said it wants a fleet of 30 flying cars in the Air Force by 2030.
The aircraft piloted during the August 20 demo at Camp Mabry in Austin is an electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle (eVTOL).
Flown under the Air Force's Agility Prime programme, they're tiny, manned machines that liftoff vertically under rotor blades – like a helicopter.
Among other things, the high-tech craft could one day be used to speedily shuttle troops and equipment across war zones.

"The thought of an electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle – a flying car – might seem straight out of a Hollywood movie," Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett said.
"But by partnering today with stakeholders across industries and agencies, we can set up the United States for this aerospace phenomenon."
The "Hexa" aircraft was built by Texas eVTOL startup, LIFT Aircraft. It seats one passenger and takes off from a standstill, like a large drone.
The flying car can even float on water, according to LIFT, using the six buoyant feet around its perimeter.
