LASUTH Performs First Laser Surgery On Kidney Stones
~0.9 mins read
The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital says it has performed its first laser surgery to remove kidney stones.
Stephen Ikuerowo, a professor of urology at LASUTH, said the laser lithotripsy treatment would save patients the pain of opening up their upper urinary tract during surgery.
Lithotripsy is a treatment using ultrasound shock waves to break kidney stones into smaller particles that the body can pass out.
On Thursday, Mr Ikuerowo disclosed this in a statement issued by Oluwaseyi Adewale, Head, Public Affairs Department of LASUTH, in Lagos.
LASUTH is the first public hospital to deploy laser treatment for kidney stones in Lagos and arguably in Nigeria, according to the statement.
He added that the hospital now had a full upper tract endoscopic and laser facility that Lagos residents and others could access.
On the cost of the treatment, Mr Ikuerowo noted that the cost of accessing the treatment in hospitals outside Nigeria would take a huge chunk from patients’ money, but that accessing such care at LASUTH would be half the cost of getting the treatment in private hospitals in the country.

Greensprings Student Emerges Top In SAT, Earns Recognition From Americas College Board
~1.5 mins read
For scoring 720/800 in English language papers and emerging in the 90th percentile of this year’s Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) examination, Toluwalope Semowo of Greensprings School has been declared winner in the National African American Recognition Programme.
The College Board, the organisation that administers standardised entrance examinations into colleges and universities in the United States made the declaration.
Answering questions on secrets of her emergence as one of the top scorers in all the SAT papers, Semowo ascribed it to the system by which his boarding school is run.
He said, “I graduated with class-of-2021, and there is no secret to this academic feat other than my learning experience at Greensprings School. The school’s hostel environment taught me time management and how to structure my studies. All the series of learning techniques helped me while preparing for SAT and AP examination for English.
“Special thanks to my teacher, Mrs Abiodun Badmus, for making my colleagues and I realise the importance of constant revision to gain understanding, as opposed to cramming a week before the start of examinations,” he added.
In a congratulatory message to Semowo, the Chief Executive Officer of the College Board, David Coleman, said the organisation is proud of his achievement.
He said: “We are extremely proud of all you’ve accomplished and to honour you as part of the National African American Recognition Programme. We are hopeful this programme helps you on your path to college. On behalf of the College Board, I celebrate your success and the brightness of all that’s ahead.”
The College Board functions as the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) for colleges and universities in the United States.
The National African American Recognition Programme was designed to honour talented African Americans who perform exceptionally in SAT or AP Exams. Recipients of this award are eligible for admission on scholarships from top American colleges and universities.
