University students in the country may finally heave a sigh of relief as school resumption finally appear to be in sight after several months since academic activities were put on hold indefinitely across all tertiary institutions, warranted by the spread of the deadly coronavirus disease.
The Lagos state government on Saturday, August 29, 2020 disclosed that tertiary institutions are set to resume on September 14, almost six months since tertiary institutions and schools at large were shut down indefinitely.
Governor Sanwo Olu of Lagos State made this disclosure during a briefing on Saturday at the State House, Marin. His words, " I am pleased to announce that our tertiary institutions will be allowed to reopen from September 14, 2020, all our tertiary institutions".
This means that students in all tertiary institutions in Lagos State are expected to resume back to school on September 14, 2020.
Recall that the government at the central had ordered immediate shutdown of all schools across the country in March so as to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus disease, however it announced the resumption of graduating pupils effective August 4, 2020 so as to write the 2020 School Certificate Examination from August 17, 2020 through September 12, 2020.
This latest development is expected to go down well with students of tertiary institutions, especially in Lagos State who have been clamouring for school reopening for sometime now.

The coronavirus pandemic seems to be subsiding and many countries, including Nigeria, have allowed the resumption of businesses, religious centers, and markets, though not at full capacity.

Educational institutions have still not been allowed to fully resume in Nigeria. The students in exit classes are the only ones allowed to resume because they have exams to write.no

Students in none exit classes have not been allowed to resume schools and have been clamoring for resumption to their educational activities. The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has replied that there is still no resumption date approved by the government, but a resumption date is around the corner.

He also urged students to be patient with the government and meetings with stakeholders will still continue. He made this known to the public during a press briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja on the 24th of August, 2020.

During this lockdown period, different pieces of information have been passed across to students for the purpose of enlightening them on school related information. Some students might not be aware of these announcements and this article will figuratively explain these announcements.

1. The first one is the announcement made by the Minister of State for Education on school resumption.

The minister, on the 26th of August, announced that a date for resumption is very much around the corner and students should be patient with the government.

He revealed that in a meeting with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, and some stakeholders, some 78 private universities claimed to be ready to open while government schools gave an average reply.

2. Another announcement students should be aware of is that NABTEB starts immediately after WAEC on the 21st of September and ends on the 15th of October. NECO SSCE starts on October 5 and will end on November 18 while NECO BECE which began on August 24 will end on september 4.

3. If school is eventually allowed to fully resume, social distancing measures will be put in place and other COVID-19 preventive measures will be put in place to help protect everyone in the school from the virus.

4. Lastly, students should know that the rumors concerning school resumption on September 7 is NOT true and should be regarded as false information. The Minister of State for Education has recently announced that there is still no date for school resumption.

As a student at home, how prepared are you for school resumption? Have you been playing or been doing the right thing?
