Broilers Reach Market Size In 6 Weeks, But This Farmer Reared It For A Year (See Pictures)

Broiler chickens are one of the most common types of commercial chicken production, because of their fast rate of growth and easy conversion rate of feed to meat all in a very short amount of time, which is averagely fixed at 6 weeks.

Depending on how much feed a farmer gives a chicken, the chicken will be able to be marketed after it had been reared for 6 weeks, which means anyone that would want to kill a broiler chicken in Christmas will have started rearing it 6 weeks ago.
This 6 weeks mark is however not compulsory because 8 weeks chicken are even bigger and more suitable for market, but because of the mortality rotate or chicken and susceptibility to sickness, most farmers stick to the 6 weeks pattern of rearing.
But this farmer, Olasunkanmi Oyetola Okiki, who shared his chicken's picture on an Agricultural Facebook group, Profitable Poultry Farming, claims that he has reared the chicken for a whole year, an arduous and commendable job that is even close to impossible.
The comparison between 6 weeks to a year is surely differing, but this farmer was able to achieve the feat, even though the chicken will not look as many viewers would expect it to look.
When one rears broiler chicken for 6 weeks, and it becomes ready for market, one would surely expect a year-old broiler to look gigantic, even as big as triple the size of 6 weeks chickens.
But sadly, it does not work that way in animal rearing, because once the chicken reaches its growth limit, it will cease increasing no matter how much feed it is being fed by the farmer.
The only difference that will be noticed the longer the chicken is reared is the weight, thickness and texture of the chickens flesh, which will become very thick and more resistible to heat and disease.
Below are pictures of the chickens shared on Facebook
If you care to know some of the many challenges that this farmer would have faced before being able to rear the broiler to a year, they are listed below:
1. Feed Price: price of poultry feed has increased alarmingly this year, with a bag of an average glared now N6,300, and most farmers manage feeds for their chicken, but imagine feeding a chicken for a whole year.
2. Diseases and Vaccination: Broilers are vulnerable breeds of chicken, and a slight change in weather, humidity of feed content can cause their deaths, but this farmer weathered this too.
3. Care and Supervision: I believe this is a type of project for the man, and it would take a lot of supervision and care all year round for the farmer.
With all these stress, there is high chance that the farmer will still sell the chicken at about same price as the 6-8 weeks chickens, unless the weight is considered when selling though, because people would not believe that it had been reared for a year because of the stagnant size.
Can you buy this type of Chicken for Christmas?
Knowing that a chicken had been reared for a year, how much would you be willing to buy the chicken?
