More Nigerians Could Slip Into P+v£rty by 2027 — World Bank Warns
The World Bank has raised alarm over Nigeria’s economic future, warning that p+v£rty levels could rise by about three percentage points by 2027.
This was revealed in its latest Africa Pulse report, released during the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and IMF in Washington, D.C.
Despite a boost in non-oil sectors in late 2024, Nigeria’s over-reliance on oil revenue and fragile economic structure could wipe out recent progress in reducing p+v£rty.
Sub-Saharan Africa remains the epicenter of global extreme p+v£rty—home to 80% of the world’s 695 million people living on less than $2.15 a day. Nearly half of the region’s extreme p++r are concentrated in just four countries, including Nigeria.
Between 2022 and 2027, p+v£rty in resource-rich but fragile nations like Nigeria and the DRC is expected to worsen by 3.6 percentage points. In contrast, neighboring countries without large oil or mineral sectors are faring better, thanks to higher agricultural exports and more stable growth.
The report points to falling oil prices and p++r governance as key factors deepening p+v£rty in Nigeria. While oil-dependent nations struggle with fiscal limitations that hinder social support systems, their non-resource peers are seeing more inclusive growth.
Currently, fragile resource-rich countries suffer an average p+v£rty rate of 46%—13 points higher than similar but more stable economies.
To reverse this trend, the World Bank urges Nigeria to implement urgent governance reforms, diversify its economy beyond oil, and prioritize job creation. Without these steps, millions more Nigerians risk being pushed further into p+v£rty.

Just 45.7% of Lagos Students Passed 2024 WASSCE — State Govt Vows Reforms
The Lagos State Government has revealed that only 45.7% of students who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) passed, leaving 54.3%—around 31,596 students—without the required results.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, shared the statistics during a media briefing marking Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second year in his second term. He acknowledged the drop in performance and assured the public that the government is working on innovative strategies to improve outcomes in future WASSCE and external exams.
According to the commissioner, the state spent approximately N1.577 billion to cover exam fees for the 58,188 students who sat for the 2024 WASSCE. To ensure proper oversight and eliminate wastage, Lagos implemented a biometric and image registration process for all final-year secondary school students. This initiative confirmed 56,134 students as eligible for the 2025 WASSCE sponsorship.
“In order to ensure accountability, we used biometric registration to identify those truly qualified for government sponsorship,” Alli-Balogun said.
In the tertiary education sector, Commissioner for Tertiary Institutions, Tolani Sule, disclosed that Lagos State disbursed N100.8 million in scholarships and bursaries to 1,165 students over the past year.
He also noted strong progress across state-owned universities, including the newly established ones. The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), in particular, has secured full course accreditations from both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and various professional bodies.
The state government says it remains committed to education reform and student support across all academic levels.

Cependant, Le Directeur Général De La Compagnie Nationale De Distribution D’Eau Et D’Électricité (Nawec), Est Optimiste Quant à La Conclusion Du Processus D'évaluation D'ici Novembre De Cette Année, Et Le Soumissionnaire Sélectionné Sera En Mesure De Commencer La Mise En œuvre.
