5m Nigerians will need to pay for the new national ID card because the government has limited revenue — NIMC

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that Nigerians will need to pay for the new multipurpose national identity card, citing limited government revenue as the primary reason for the decision.

Speaking during a two-day roundtable for journalists in Lagos, Dr. Peter Iwegbu, Head of Card Management Services at NIMC, said, “The payment is to ensure that the card is produced for only those who need it.”

He explained that this approach aims to avoid repeating past mistakes where physical cards were issued for free, but many were left uncollected.

“In the previous attempt to issue free National ID cards, over two million cards were produced, and many of them have not been collected till date,” he noted.

Dr. Iwegbu further stated, “The government’s limited revenue is also a major factor in the decision to make Nigerians pay for the new ID card.”

Adding to this, the Director of Information Technology at NIMC, Mr. Lanre Yusuf, said, “The idea of a free national ID card did not turn out well in the past.” He described the new ID card as a post-paid identity card, emphasizing that individuals must need the card before initiating a request for it.

“To get the new national ID card, Nigerians will need to make a payment, select a pickup location, and then collect their card from the chosen location.

The government has implemented programs to make the card accessible to less privileged Nigerians who cannot afford it but require it to access government support. This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to inclusivity and equality,” Yusuf explained. Yusuf revealed that the multipurpose ID cards are set to launch soon, with sample test cards already received. He added, “NIMC is working with banks across the country, which will make it possible for people to walk into any bank closest to them and request the card.”

Canada-based Medical Doctor Alleges Di§crimination By Airline Staff After Being Denied Hotel Accommodation Due To Her Nigerian Passport
~0.8 mins read

A Canada-based medical doctor has alleged di§crimination by airline staff after being denied hotel accommodation due to her Nigerian passport.

She said took a flight from Winnipeg to Newcastle. Her flight got to Newcastle but was turned back to Paris. They were promised a hotel on getting there. They got there and everyone was offered a hotel including those without visa except her because she carried a Nigerian passport.

She caught the customer service agent whispering to some passengers that were without visa whom she was escorting to their hotel to lower their voices when they were asking questions about going to their hotel so she wouldn’t hear the conversation.

On a whole flight, she was singled out because of her green passport. She is a doctor working in the UK and permanent resident of the Canada. She is not a refugee but she is being treated as one. Her hand luggage was checked in so she has no supplies and can’t clean herself for two days because their flight was rescheduled for Saturday and this is Thursday. This is unfair.

Why I Allowed My 18-year-old Daughter Pierce Her Nav3l — Actor Bolanle Ninalowo
~1.2 mins read

Renowned Nollywood actor, Bolanle Ninalowo, has opened up about his decision to support his daughter, Aliyah, in piercing her navel, citing the move as a step to strengthen their bond.

In an interview with media personality VJ Adams, Ninalowo shared the story behind the choice.

He revealed that Aliyah, who recently turned 18, had initially expressed a desire to pierce her tongue. However, he felt uncomfortable with the idea and suggested an alternative. He said she eventually proposed a navel piercing, which he approved because it can be easily removed.

He added that he wanted to maintain a strong bond with his daughter, which was why he agreed to her request, drove her to the appointment, and covered the cost. “I remember one day my daughter woke me up and said she wanna get a tongue ring, and I took a moment to think then I said, ‘Yo Aliyah, a tongue ring, I wouldn’t want to kiss a girl with a tongue ring but think about something else,’ and she was like okay, I will think about it,” he said.

“So she came back and said, ‘I now know what I want, I could get a belly button ring,’ and I am like that is more like it because you can remove it anytime. I drove her there myself. As much as I would rather not want that, but that was an opportunity for me to connect, so I would not stop that.”

Last year, Ninalowo announced the end of his marriage to Bunmi, citing irreconcilable differences. They share two children: Aliyah, their eldest, and Morakinyo, their only son.
