DeepSeek Transferred Data Without Consent, South Korean Watchdog Says
~1.4 mins read
Personal Information Protection Commission says AI model sent personal data to Beijing-based cloud service. South Korea’s data protection watchdog has accused DeepSeek, the Chinese start-up whose artificial intelligence-powered chatbot took the tech scene by storm earlier this year, of transferring personal data without users’ consent. The Personal Information Protection Commission said on Thursday that DeepSeek had been transferring information to several companies in China and the United States before its ChatGPT-like AI model was removed from app stores in February, pending a privacy review. Nam Seok, director of the commission’s investigation bureau, said during a news conference that the app had sent user prompts and device and network information to a Beijing-based cloud service called Volcano Engine. DeepSeek “acknowledged it had insufficiently considered Korea’s data protection laws” and “expressed its willingness to cooperate with the commission, and voluntarily suspended new downloads”, Nam said. DeepSeek did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Following the South Korean watchdog’s announcement, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it placed a high level of importance on data privacy and security. “We have never – and will never – require companies or individuals to collect or store data through illegal means,” ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said during a regular news conference. DeepSeek’s R1 caused a sensation in January after its developers released a research paper claiming they spent less than $6m on computing power to train the model – a fraction of the multibillion-dollar AI budgets of US tech giants such as OpenAI and Google. The emergence of a Chinese startup capable of rivalling Silicon Valley’s leading players challenged assumptions about US dominance in AI and prompted scrutiny of the sky-high market valuations of companies such as Nvidia and Meta. Marc Andreessen, one of the most influential tech venture capitalists in Silicon Valley, hailed DeepSeek’s model as “AI’s Sputnik moment”. Follow Al Jazeera English:...

Saudi’s ‘Sleeping Prince’, Al-Waleed,  Marks 36th Birthday Amid Long-Term Coma
Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal, affectionately known as the “Sleeping Prince,” has quietly celebrated his 36th birthday while still in a coma—a state he has remained in for nearly 20 years following a tragic acc+d£nt.
In 2005, while attending a military college, the young royal suffered a devastating head inj¥ry in a car cr+sh. Since then, he has been under continuous medical care at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, supported by life-sustaining machines.
A great-grandson of King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, and grandson to Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz, Prince Al-Waleed is deeply rooted in Saudi royal lineage. Though he is not in the direct line to the throne, he shares close family ties with King Salman bin Abdulaziz, his great-uncle.
Throughout the years, his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, has remained unwavering in his hope for a miracle. Rejecting suggestions to withdraw life support, he once stated, “If God had wanted him to d+e in the acc+d£nt, he would have been in his grave now.”
In 2019, there were moments that sparked hope, as reports emerged of the prince making slight movements, such as lifting a finger or turning his head. However, these instances have not led to full recovery.
Following his birthday, images of the prince surrounded by his family resurfaced on social media, drawing widespread sympathy and prayers for his condition.
The story of Prince Al-Waleed stands as a poignant reminder of hope, faith, and the enduring strength of family ties in the face of unimaginable challenges.

Insulting: Hamas Condemns Abbass Remarks On Gaza Captives
~2.1 mins read
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas says keeping the captives provides Israel with justification for its attacks on Gaza. Hamas has condemned remarks made by Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas, who urged the Palestinian group ruling Gaza to release Israeli captives and lay down arms. Senior Hamas official Basem Naim said on Thursday that Abbas’s remarks made a day earlier were “insulting”. “Abbas repeatedly and suspiciously lays the blame for the crimes of the occupation and its ongoing aggression on our people,” he said. Abbas on Wednesday urged Hamas to free all captives, saying keeping them provided Israel with “excuses” to attack Gaza. “Hamas has given the criminal occupation excuses to commit its crimes in the Gaza Strip, the most prominent being the holding of hostages,” Abbas said at a meeting in Ramallah, the PA’s seat in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. “I’m the one paying the price, our people are paying the price, not Israel. My brother, just hand them over.” “Every day there are deaths,” Abbas said. “You sons of dogs, hand over what you have and get us out of this” ordeal, he added, levelling a harsh Arabic epithet at Hamas. There have been deep political and ideological divisions between Abbas’s Fatah party and Hamas for nearly 20 years. Abbas and the PA have often accused Hamas of undermining Palestinian unity, while Hamas has criticised the former for collaborating with Israel and cracking down on West Bank dissent. The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement, which split from Abbas’s Fatah in the 2000s, issued a statement on Telegram on Wednesday condemning Abbas’s remarks. “We strongly condemn the offensive statements made by President Abbas during the Central Council meeting regarding the resistance and our people’s resistance fighters, disregarding the sacrifices and struggle of our people and ignoring the suffering and ongoing sacrifices of the prisoners,” read the statement. “We condemn the PA leadership’s continued pursuit of this discourse, which criminalizes the resistance and absolves the occupation of its ongoing crimes against our people for decades, especially the genocidal war against Gaza, the annexation and Judaization of the West Bank and Jerusalem, and the severe suffering endured by our valiant prisoners.” The movement also called on Abbas to issue an apology for his remarks. “We call on the President of the Palestinian Authority to apologize for this offensive speech and reverse all steps that reinforce division and align with Zionist will. We call on him to return to the embrace of the people and their choices and to cease pursuing the absurd path of surrender and compromise.” Since Israel’s campaign in Gaza resumed on March 18, at least 1,928 people have been killed in Gaza, bringing the total death toll since the war erupted to at least 51,305, according to the enclave’s Ministry of Health. Talks on a new ceasefire have so far been fruitless, and a Hamas delegation is in Cairo for renewed negotiations with Egyptian and Qatari mediators. Follow Al Jazeera English:...
