Continuous Voters Registration: 8 Major Factors Hindering Electoral Exercise
~3.3 mins read

FCT, Abuja - Foremost election observer, Yiaga Africa, has released its first report on the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise.

The organisation assigned observers to various pre-assigned local government areas registration centres.

The observers documented critical incidents witnessed and send in reports of the critical incidents observed.

Legit.ng lists 8 major issues hindering the electoral exercise as revealed by Yiaga Africa.

MURIC replies CAN, says Zulum demolished more mosques than churches in Borno

They are:

1. Registration of ineligible citizens as voters (underage Nigerians)

Yiaga Africa observers reported the registration of underaged citizens as prospective voters on July 29 in Langtang North local government area in Plateau state and Madobi and Kano Municipal local government areas in Kano state.

2. Restriction of movement across some local government areas in Anambra and Rivers states

WTV observers reported a slow start of the CVR exercise in some states due to some restrictions of movement affecting citizens' access to the registration centres. The restriction was due in part to a purported sit-at-home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra.

3. Slow start on commencement day in some states

Reports of centres not opening were received from Dawakin Tofa, Kura and Madobi local government areas in Kano state as well as in Mangu local government area in Plateau state on Monday, July 26. However, these centres were subsequently opened and the CVR exercise commenced before the end of the first week.

FG says 10 million Nigerians have been lifted out of poverty in 6 years

4. Challenges with the INEC Voters Enrolment Device (IVED)

Yiaga Africa citizens observers reported a range of issues with the IVED, from officials not being able to access the device because of password issues, slow internet connectivity, slow performance of the device and malfunctioning of the device in some locations.

5. Conflicting information on online pre-registration and physical exercise

There seems to be conflicting information as regards the status of Nigerians who have commenced the pre-registration process via the INEC online portal and citizens who are accessing the physical process directly. For instance, Yiaga Africa received reports from Karu and Bwari area councils in Abuja registration centres suggesting that registration officials were only attending to registrants who had commenced the pre-registration process via the INEC portal.

6. Disinterest by political parties

Yiaga Africa observed the abysmally low participation of political parties in the CVR process indicated in the absence of political party-specific citizens mobilisation activities to increase participation and the absence of political party agents in the registration centres.

7. Security concerns

The reports of absence of security personnel at some of the registration centres is worrying given the different security concerns across most states of the federation and the previous attacks to some INEC offices and properties in some local government areas.

8. Observers not allowed to observe in some local government areas

Despite accrediting observers to observe the Continuous Voters Registration process, Yiaga Africa received reports that observers were not allowed to observe the CVR process in some LGAs despite showing evidence of accreditation.

~3.0 mins read

Dino Melaye, a former senator who represented Kogi West in the eighth Senate, has claimed an "implosion" is "coming" to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Melaye who was once a member of the APC left the party for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he contested for the Senate seat in 2019.

APC, PDP's leadership crises and what they mean for 2023 elections

He, however, lost to the APC's candidate, Smart Adeyemi, after a rerun.

In a video posted both on Facebook and Instagram, Malaye is seen dancing and singing as he mocks the APC.

The song:

"Oh my head carry me dey go, oh my head carry me dey go, anywhere better dey carry me dey go, anywhere better dey carry me dey go.
"Oh my head carry me dey go, anywhere PDP dey carry me dey go, anywhere PDP dey carry me dey go."

APC's leadership crisis

Ahead of the 2023 elections, the ruling APC is facing a leadership crisis especially following a Supreme Court verdict which some interpreted as questioning the legality of the party's caretaker committee arrangement.

However, Melaye's party, PDP, is also engulfed in a leadership crisis as some prominent members have continued to call for the resignation of the national chairman, Uche Secondus.

The PDP has also lost some of its prominent governors, including sitting governors, to the APC.

Nigerians react

Malachy Ogar said on Facebook:

"FGN needs to put you on payroll for providing psychotherapy for the socially bereaved ones in this Country Nigeria. SDM keep it up."

Chimezie Ezeala Thomas said:

"You're still viewing the problems of Nigeria from a partisan perspective. You're indeed an opportunistic politician."

Sterly Sterly said:

"Then, after the implosion, the remnants will converge under the big umbrella of thieves and the looting and destruction continues."

Dino Melaye speaks on Yahaya Bello's presidential ambition

In a previous report, Melaye threw a jibe at Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state, his political archrival, saying he cannot be Nigeria’s president.

Governor Bello is one of the Nigerian politicians who has been widely reported to be interested in succeeding President Muhammdu Buhari in 2023.

However, the former Kogi West senator said Governor Bello who used to be his political ally "can only be the president of Agasa Development Union in Okene."

The report added that PSG eggheads feel Kylian Mbappe may have to leave the side next summer and Cristiano Ronaldo would be a perfect replacement.

However, that will depend on if Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave Juventus for a move to the French League next summer.

It was also claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes is aware of PSG's plans to have his client.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be 37 next year and he will most likely be offered a 2-year contract till he is 39 at Paris Saint-Germain.

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Lionel Messi cannot wait to hit the ground running at Paris Saint Germain as the Argentine was said to have arrived at his first training session two hours earlier.

The 34-year-old held a press conference where he revealed his ambition is to help the French League giants win their first Champions League glory.

Huge amount Lionel Messi will get from Barcelona as bonus despite his move to PSG finally revealed

And he appears ready to make an impact at the club after arriving at 9:15 am for a session scheduled for 11:00 CEST.

However, Spanish news outlet Marca reveals the move was to get familiar with his new surroundings and chat with the coaching staff.

It is understandable that Messi and Mauricio Pochettino are not visitors to each other owing to their Argentine connection, but this is the first time they will be working together.

The publication further explained that it wasn't sure if the six-time Ballon d'Or winner participated in the team's group training, he was however said to have made getting acquainted with his new colleagues and staff his top priority.

The delighted player said via the club's website:

Tension as Liverpool top star edges closer to Anfield exit this summer"I’m happy and blessed to be back at this wonderful club. It’s been a long journey for me: I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I’m coming back with a lot of experience and more mature."The relationship I have with this club means so much to me, as you know. I have supported Chelsea as a kid and now to be back and try to help them win more titles is an amazing feeling."The way the club is going fits my ambitions perfectly at 28 and just coming off winning Serie A. I think this opportunity comes at the right time and hopefully we can have a lot of success together.
"Since I left Chelsea, it’s been a long journey with a lot of ups and downs, but these experiences made me strong and the challenge is to try to help the team win some more trophies. I can’t wait to get started and to help the club achieve more success."PSG stars in big trouble as Lionel Messi sets huge standard at his first training session

Shaqiri poised to leave Liverpool

Xherdan Shaqiri could leave Liverpool before the close of this transfer window this summer as he has reportedly agreed on personal terms with French League giants Olympique Lyon.

The 29-year-old who scored three goals in five Euro 2020 games for Switzerland is not one of Jurgen Klopp's favourites having been frozen out of the Reds squad.

And with one year left on his deal, the Merseyside outfit is considering cashing in on him to avoid losing him for free next year.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano appears to have backed up this claim after suggesting the Swiss star is ready to move to France and is actively trying to expedite his exit.
